  • One especially cold evening, the Perez sisters were all huddled togather. "I...I wish we could heat all the rooms..." the youngest, Lucy said. "I wish we were rich. Then we could heat all the rooms and still have enough money to buy a new house and heat all the rooms there too!" said Hannah. "I wish father has enough blankets. I don't think father's factory provides him warm blankets which he could use to warm himself." The oldest, Hazel said.

The Perez family wasn't rich. So the family had barely made money to heat one room, the living room. Once, the Perez family was wealthy, but after the economy droped, father had to go back to work. But because of the economy, nobody was welcoming father except the shoe factory. Father had no choice but to go to the shoe factory even though it gave father a low salary. But father was patient and took his job seriously though most of the workers didn't. That wasn't all of what father did. Even though the family wasn't rich anymore, he adopted not 1, but 5 girls.

Because of the economy, many families couldn't afford to keep many children and many abandoned theirs. The orphanages were over flowing with children and father thought that adopting some children will be a great help for the orphange. He first thought of adopting 2 or 3 orphans, but when he saw the inside of the orphanage, he changed his mind and adopted 5 girls.

Here are the list of the Perez girls. The blue one is adopted children and the purple one is the children who were born by mother.

    Hazel-18 Samantha-15, Hannah-13, Celina-13, Courtney-13, Amanda-12, Daina-10, Lucy-7

It was a very daring choice for a time like this and many of the people who are related to father disagreed with him. But father was definate and despite the worries, he adopted 5 orphans. Many told him that the orphans wouldn't appreciate him and cause trouble. Others said that the orphans would run away. Some people even said that father was foolish to make a decision like that. But father just simply ignored the rude remarks and stood his ground.

"Samantha! Can you please help me with the laundry?" Hezel called. She was the only one who started working. "We have a lot of work to do!" Samantha slowly stretched. "Do I really have to? I'm so sleepy..." she murmured as she slowly pulled the blanket up. Hezel sighed. "Never mind. Hannah! What about you?" she asked, looking at the pack of girls. Hannah shrugged. "All right. Anyway, where's mother?" she asked, looking around in confusion. Amanda rolled her eyes. "Don't you remember? Mother's at the market. We're out of food!" she said. "What? We're out of FOOD?!" Celina cried, worried. "No, not that. We still have money, but the refrigiater is EMPTY." Amanda said.

Hazel coughed nervously. "Are you girls going to help me or not?" she asked, looking at Hannah. "Okay okay, coming." she said. Hazel bit her lip. "Girls. I didn't want you to be worried, but grandma and grandpa are coming today. We have to look our best or-" Amanda cut Hazel off and cried, "We're dead! Grandma and grandpa?! OMG!!! Tell them I'm dead and if they try to find me, say that I'm drowned!" Amanda barried her face in her hands.

Courtney, who was quietly knitting in the corner, shivered. "Why are they coming Hazel?" she asked trumbling. Grandma and grandpa wasn't the favor of the Perez girls. They were the ones who disagreed the idea of adopting the girls. They were always the people who the girls feared the most. Grandma's first comments were all shocking to the girls. Grandma said that Hazel was a pretty-looking witch, Samantha was a dog in a girl's mask, Hannah was a lazy sloth, Celina was a big fool, Courtney was a scarcrow, Amanda was a Miss Know-it-all, Daina was a faker, and Lucy was a cry baby.

It was pretty shocking to the Perez girls, especially to Daina. Grandma had been kind to all of them, but when father disobeyed grandma's will, she was furious and been not pretty kind to the Perez family. Grandma had threatened father that if he adopted those girls, she will end relations with him, but father did adopt the girls.

Because of this, grandma had been a fear to all of them.

Daina, who was watching Courtney knit spoke up. "Hazel, can't granny come while I'm at school? I don't want to meet her..." she said. Hazel frowned. "Daina! That's very rude of you to speak about your grandma like that!" she scolded. "But...but..." Daina was in flood of tears. "I don't want to see her!" Hazel sighed and calmed her little sister. "Grandma will soon be okay when she get used us. So please don't cry." "But I want my real granny back! I don't want This granny!" Daina said in sobs. Hazel patted her back and motioned for the other girls to get started in their chores. They all nodded, even little Lucy nodded too. It was different now that grandma was coming. They will show grandma and grandpa that they're not a child like they said so.
