  •  "So she's gone now," Sophie murmured, barely lifting her lips. "Gone."

Alex scratched her head and let out a feeble laugh. "Yeah. The girl is gone now. The girl we once desperately wanted to disappear. The same girl who saved you and I from it."

A cold breeze swept through the empty courtyard as the two girls stayed silent. They're eyes rested on one small stone written with these words, "Cassandra A. Louis MacLaine" obviously without any sincerity. It wabbled unsteadily as a strong wind rushed into the courtyard, flying Sophie's long, all braided up, cacao-brown hair from her face, and lifting Alex's now short black hair from her neck, tickling it and at the same time, blowing the stone away from the two girl's sight, as if to say to them to let go of this poor girl's spirit.

    ***

Alex sat on her bed, resting her head as a flush of memories struck her. It seemed like it had been years since she met Cassandra and all her adventures started, but it has only been a month since the great adventure-and Cassandra. Alex, being so composed, never shed a tear in life. But now, her eyes started filing with water-she had never suspected she would cry for Cassandra-so never had she been surprised when a tear trickled down her cheek. Then a flood of tears followed. She admitted now that she missed, no, liked Cassandra, a feeling she had tried hard to forget. Cassandra was odd, so how could she like an odd girl when she- Alex shook her head. She didn't want to ruin her mourn thinking about her predators, as she called them.

    ***

Sophie stared out her window, glancing at the shadow of her best friend. The figure seemed to be crying. No, Sophie thought, Alex would never cry. At the thought of the word "cry", Sophie wept. Unlike Alex, she was very emotional, and also vulnerable. Her feelings for Cassandra was deeper than Alex.

When Cassandra first came as Alex's mother's aunt's granddaughter's brother's cousin, Sophie already had her suspicions. Alex's mother had died six years ago, and she had never heard Alex's mother talking about her aunt. Mrs. Cocklion never spoke a word about her aunt, as Sophie remembered, but not that she ever spoke about her other relatives and family members, at least infront of Sophie. Sophie grimiced as she remembered the day Alex's mother died. She had died so suddenly, so frighteningly, so quietly of a heart disease which everyone persumed as a heart attack. The same day Cassandra arrived. That's when it struck her, her old self. Sophie laughed as she remembered how she suspected Cassandra had killed Alex's mother, so that nobody would recognize her. She now knew it didn't work that way.

Sophie gazed out the window again. Alex was still there, lying on her bed, clicking on and off the light in the room. Sophie waved her good-night-bye and she too, lied on bed, falling fast asleep, dreaming about Cassandra and her gentle smile.
