  •  Aliata was doing her French homework, but she couldn't concentrate. She was worried about her uncle. What if he had been kidnapped? What if he had been murdered? She tried not to think negatively. She had finished her French homework and moved on to biology, when the doorbell rang. Alliata was getting tired of homework, so she was excited to hear the doorbell, which was very unusual to the Percerins, seeing as, they never ate delivered food like pizza delivered any groceries. Wondering who it could be, Alliata ran down the stairs lightly. Aunt Ella, who was Alliata's father's sister, had already openned the door, and was talking with a woman. Alliata realized at once the woman was a policewoman. She wore a police uniform.

"...please come together," she was saying, "as he is kept there-"

"Wait, what?!" Aunt Ella interrupted. She turned around as if to go somewhere, and saw Alliata. "Oh, Alliata! Please fetch your father. There's something wrong, but don't worry."

Alliata ran up the stairs to her father's study. They had never had a policeman come to their house. It had to be a emergency, and Alliata was very worried. She knocked on the door. But even before her father replied "come in!", she flung open the door.

"Aliata! Mind your..." Mr. Thomas Percerin stopped talking as he saw her daughter's frantic ex-pression. He stood up. "What is it?!"

"The cops... a policewoman is here and it seems there's something going on and we need to go to the police station."

The father and daughter quickly walked downstairs. The policewoman spotted Mr. Percerin and smiled very slightly as if she was relieved. "Please," she said. "Come with me to the station. All matters will be explained at there." Mr. Percerin grabbed a coat and beckoned Aunt Ella to follow him who also grabbed a coat.

Aliata was about ask, 'Please, father, can I not come too?' when Mr. Percerin turned to her. "I know you want to come, but this might be about law. Besides. I need you to tell the others what happened. It won't take long, and I'll call before I leave the station so you can hear the story as fast as you can." Then he walked out the door, which locked right infront of Aliata's face.

Aliata ran toward the kitchen after about ten minutes of wondering what had happened. Her mother was an amateur cook, and she cooked all the foods while Aunt Hannah helped her and set the tables every meal. Now, being far away to meal time, the two of them were chatting at the table with a thick recipe book open.

"Mother, Aunt Hannah!" Aliata called. Then she told them the whole story.

"Oh dear," said Mrs. Sheila Percerin, Aliata's mother. "I guess it's about the court or a trial... even though I've never heard of a police coming to fetch a lawyer... I do hope he calls soon."

"Yes," agreed Aunt Hannah. "But it might as well as be good news."

"Mm-hmm. Aliata, why don't you tell your uncles and aunts what happened? After that, I think you may have a little break for 3 hours." Aliata nodded. She was always given a break time on Sundays. She hurried off to tell Aunt Alica and two uncles. Aunt Alica was a writer, Uncle John did odd jobs around the house and arranged things, and Uncle Henry Hugo was Mr. Thomas Percerin's manager. He helped him with the transportations he used, arranged his papers, and accepted clients.

Aliata went up to her room and started reading, but she couldn't focus. There was something definitely wrong at the station. Suddenly the phone rang. Aliata jumped up and ran downstairs. She knew it would be her father calling from the station. Excitied, she didn't even check the number that called and took the phone.

"Hello?" she said. But the response that came was from a person Aliata had never imagined.
