  • For a time which could not be measured, Lutenger just hovered in nothingness, away from his mother and Miranda, away from his sorrow, away from this world. Soon the last trace of our world disappeared into the darkness below his feet.

It came to Lutenger that he was alone, probably in the entire world. Panic slowly filled his brain, binding his whole body, like sorrow of losing his brother did moments ago. And as he started to hope for returning to his home world, quite suddenly, a new ground started to solidify under his feet.

Lutenger looked around. The new ground stretched out of his sight, and other landscapes started to appear-sky which was a pleasant shade of indigo, with bright but not dazzling spots of light, even more colorful than the color itself, twinkling on and off all over it, and a desk with a person with long hair and beard, wearing glimmering white East Asian-stile robes, sitting behind it, who looked at Lutenger in mild surprise.

A silence settled between both people, awkward yet tense. Lutenger did not know what to speak, what to ask, what to do-only wanted desperately for help.

And help came. Miranda solidified from thin air without any special events, then landed on the ground-if you can call it-lightly.

     "Hello, Sirius!"

She said, being a good deal more cheerful than minutes ago. The person called Sirius, who seemed to know her, replied with a slight smile.

     Miranda turned to Lutenger.

"Lutenger, this is Sirius-the listkeeper of the entire spiritual world, and the listmaker of spiritual registration."

"Is it you who brought this boy to me, Miranda?"

Sirius spoke in a steady, wise old man's voice. Miranda nodded.

     "For spiritual registration?"

     She nodded again.

Sirius said, "All right, then," and turned to Lutenger.

     "Name?"

     Lutenger was ready. "Lutenger, sir."

Sirius stared at Lutenger-not very hard, but with a manner which would make anyone gulp. Even seated, he was taller than Lutenger. He blinked two or three times, rather longer than necessary, and asked his next question.

     "And your surname?"

Lutenger was ready at any question, but just after he decided to answer quickly, he remembered that this was his first time being asked of his surname-which he never knew.

"I don't know, sir. No one told me."

He answered, trailing off the end of the sentence. Sirius, still resembling a person Lutenger had once saw in a painting from ancient China, looked at him yet more interestingly, and didn't seem to be disappointed. He narrowed his eyes and peered at the blonde boy.

"You are here for inheriting and finishing your brother's job, aren't you?"

Lutenger stopped in surprise. His attempt to speak fizzed away. He barely managed to speak almost five seconds later.

     "How-how do you know that-"

"Miranda isn't the only person who knows about your brother's position."

     Sirius spoke rather darkly.

     "So, are you?"

     "Yes."

Lutenger couldn't help feeling timid once more.

"So, done. You'll be able to be here as a spirit after seven days, and I recommend you to do so. You'll inherit Miranda as your planetary spirit. Take this. It will help you learn about this new and unnatural world, which will, after exactly a week, be your second home."

Lutenger took the pamphlet, written 'Beginner's Guide to Spirituality-K.S.Crozean' on the first page in shimmering blue letters, with trembling hands.

"Now be home. Miranda will bring your spiritual badge after a week."

Miranda had her hand holding one of Lutenger's hand, and gently pulled off the ring he had been wearing all through. As his body weighed down like it had always been, and the tall form of Sirius began to disappear out of sight, Lutenger heard him say,

"And above all, welcome, to Spirituality."

Lilac was still sobbing, rather feebly, when their feet touched the floor of his bedroom. It was still morning-the same as when Lutenger woke up in his bed, the same as when he had got the news that he still didn't wanted to accept.

Lilac raised her head a bit, and said,

"What took you so long? You said that you will bring him back-"

     "Uh...."

Miranda looked uneasy, and didn't look Lilac straight to the eyes, as if she had done something guilty. Lutenger, so as to comfort her as much as he could, he spoke.

"Mom, I've become a spirit now. And I will 'inherit' Liobern's job after ta week. You don't want him to have died in vain-"

But his words were cut off by his mother's angry shout-obviously his words did not comfort her, and only did the opposite.

     "A SPIRIT?"

Miranda leapt back in surprise, Lutenger, too, jolted. This wasn't what he intended to do.

"WHAT YOUR BROTHER BECAME, AND CAUSED HIS DEATH? No, I will NOT allow you to be a spirit or anything. I should have done all I could do to stop HIM becoming a spirit from the start! No, I will NOT let you become a spirit and meet the same end as your brother! You are forbidden to go anywhere for seven days. Miranda, go! Go and no longer tempt my son to throw himself to danger!"
