 But of course, Jamie and Max did not know about any of this until a bunch of masked people burst in the cafe. "Freeze, vampire!" screamed a big, muscular man that seemed to be the leader.

 Max sprang to his feet. "Who are you?" he asked in a fearful voice. Jamie looked like she would burst into tears any time. "We know everything!" A tall, slender lady in a black suit and sunglasses shouted. "You'd better surrender!" 

 "I don't know what you're talking about!" Jamie cried. "Quiet, human!" said the burly man. "Or I'll tie you with a rope!" Max and Jamie exchanged nervous glances. Finally, Jamie started crying.

 "Uh, you pathetic little girl," said the sunglasses-and-suit lady. But she didn't seem so angry at her. "Zach, release the human girl," the lady ordered to the muscular man. "What for?" said the man called Zach. "After all, she knows the vampire secret." "She's a human," said the lady. "And she's crying!" 

 "Whatever you say, Leah," Zach grumbled, then released Jamie. "Let go of my boyfriend! STRANGER DANGER!" Jamie screamed on top of her lungs. The lady called Leah sighed. "We're not bad people," she tried to convince Jamie. "Then LET GO OF MAX!" Jamie screamed.

 Leah sighed again. "Sorry, girl, we can't. We're VHs. Capturing and killing vampires is our job." Another woman glared at Leah. "Why are you telling her that?" 

 "Oh, come on, Alya. She's just a young human," replied Leah.

 Jamie could guess what was going on. So Vampire Hunters, VHs for short, somehow knew about Max and had broke into the cafe to destroy Max. And his family was next. Jamie shuddered. This thing was so terrorizing for her.

 She glanced at Max. He was tied up in a rope, and a short, ratlike man was taking something out of a bag. Jamie gasped. It was a clove of garlic, and the man was trying to shove the smelly vegetable into Max's mouth!

 Oh noooooo, moaned Jamie in her head. Max is going to die! Then a brilliant idea came to her, as if an angel had whispered it to her. 

 Jamie remembered Max's house. It was full of stone. Max had told her that stone was good for curing garlic venom. Jamie grabbed a stone decoration from the cafe's windowsills. She threw it at Max as the man shoved the garlic into Max's throat.

 It missed Max, but it did hit the man on the head. As the rat-faced man fainted, Jamie ran up to her boyfriend and scrubbed the stone on his skin. "Uh.." 

 "Max, you're alive!" said Jamie in a joyful tone. "Yes, I am. Thanks," replied Max.

 "NOOOOOO!" screamed a girl. She was the spy who had told the VHs Max's location. She was a university student of nineteen. She fainted of shock.

 "Nina! Are you okay?" A young girl with a mask shook the spy. "Miriam?" said Nina after a minute or two. The young girl took off her mask. The face of Miriam Hattes, Jamie's worst enemy, appeared.
