The Case File#2-[The Mayor's Death]
When Detective Seymore and Scarlett arrived
at the mayor's office, they saw Mr. Barnett and other police officers.
"Detective Seymore!"
Mr. Barnett called.
"Good evening, sir. I heard that the
mayor got killed."
Mr. Seymore went over to Mr. Barnett. The
police officer nodded.
"Yes. About 2~3 o'clock, he was killed
by someone in his office and-"
"Wait, sir."
Mr. Seymore cut off.
"Are you sure that it was a murder? What
about suicide?"
He asked Mr. Barnett, who shook his head
with disagree.
"No, sir. It's definitely not a
suicide. The mayor was about to attend a meeting. And his secretary said that
it was a really important. So why he would commit suicide just before the
important meeting?"
He shrugged.
"What? 3? That means he died right
before the meeting started?"
Mr. Seymore looked surprised. But he
recovered fast. Mr. Barnett nodded eagerly, and continued explaining.
"That's right. And when the meeting
started, the assistant, I mean secretary, got a call that the mayor was absent. So she went to his
office, and found his dead body- that's what happened, sir."
"Okay. Did anyone else come to this room before the meeting?"
Mr. Seymore asked. Mr. Barnett opened his little note, and read aloud.
"Yes, sir. A janitor- today, he started to clean his room at 2 o'clock. He left the room at 2 : 30."
Mr. Seymore nodded.
"That's all I need. Thanks, sir."
Scarlett looked at Mr. Seymore. He seemed
thoughtful- he was slightly frowning, and his eyes were focused. Scarlett was
already impressed- her role model detective was in front of her, solving a
murder case.
'No, Scarlett Loftin. It's not a time for
worldly thoughts. You have to concentrate, you are Detective Seymore's
assistant!'
She thought, shaking her head hard.
Mr. Seymore thought for a moment, and
finally said.
"Thank you, Mr. Barnett. And the
cup-"
He pointed at a cup that was half-filled with
tea.
"Did the mayor drank it?"
He asked Mr. Barnett.
"Oh, yes, sir. I heard that he always
drinks tea at 2 o'clock. His secretary makes them. Oh, and the secretary said that he always drinks tea almost for an hour! Without a refill, sir. Without a single refill! Well I drink my tea for 10 minutes."
Mr. Barnett answered, shaking his head.
Suddenly, Mr. Seymore walked toward the cup, and smelled it slightly.
"Hmm... it's rosemary."
He muttered to himself.
'Nothing unusual according to this smell.'
He thought.
"Okay. And now, can I see the dead body?"
Mr. Seymore asked. Mr. Barnett shook nodded, sweating.
"Yes, yes, of course, sir. But it's kind of weird."
"What is weird?"
Mr. Seymore said, raising an eyebrow.
"Um... around the mayor's neck, there's a bruise."
Mr. Barnett answered, pointing at his neck.
"A bruise?"
Mr. Seymore said loudly, and Mr. Barnett jumped up.
"Yes, yes, sir. Follow me. I'll show you."
He walked to the corpse.
"This is the bruise- a striped- looking bruise, I guess."
Mr. Barnett frowned. He was thinking of a proper word to describe the bruise's shape.
Mr. Seymore examined the 'stripe- looking bruise' on the mayor's neck.
"Well."
Mr. Seymore finished examining the corpse, and said.
"Sir, can you summon his secretary and the janitor please?"
Mr. Barnett nodded, and went outside of the mayor's office, and disappeared.
After that, Mr. Seymore called Scarlett.
"Loftin, look. What do you think about this bruise?"
He suddenly asked her, whispering.
"Um..."
She didn't know what to say. She wanted to answer like a real detective, but how hard she thought, the perfect hypothesis didn't come out well.
"I think..."
She paused.
"Someone made the bruise intently."
Scarlett finally answered. But to her surprise, Detective Seymore nodded eagerly.
"Yes, you're right. And according to its color, it's quite new. Maybe it'll be a clue to solve this. Remember that well."
He said. Then he returned his attention to the corpse again.
