Chapter 4. The morning

As I walked through the hallways, I saw that this school was at least twice bigger than my school. Also, unlike my grandpa-old school, this one was modern. As I walked by, I saw some students passing by. Everything was perfect, but.. something felt wrong. I didn’t know what, but it just felt like that. I thought about telling Mrs. Carson, but I thought it may hurt her feelings so I didn’t tell her that. We stopped in front of a big door.

“This is the main hall.” Mrs. Carson said.

She opened the door, and I couldn’t help being impressed. “Whoa!”

The main hall was really big, bigger than any classrooms I saw while passing by. At the front of the hall was an enormous clock. There were five tables, each really long. Kids with fiery red eyes sat in the first row. They had red badges on their uniforms. I didn’t know why, but I didn’t like them. Kids with Orange eyes sat in the second row. I could see that the second row was the most crowded. They had orange badges on their uniforms. In the third row, kids with blue eyes and blue badges on their uniforms sat. The fourth row was the least crowded, with about four kids, and they simply didn’t have many similarities. A kid who looked a bit older than me had yellow eyes, and the kid who was talking to her had violet eyes. At the fifth row, adults sat, who were probably teachers. I looked up, and the ceiling was really tall, maybe even taller than the building itself. I had no idea if that was possible, but since this was a school for kids with ‘supernatural powers’, I agreed that may be possible. There were lots of kids, at least a hundred of them.

“They all have superpowers?” I asked Mrs. Carson, surprised.

“Of course, since this is Winderbritch, the school for kids with supernatural powers.” she smiled. She kept talking about it like she was trying to sound professional. “Wait here. I will get Katherine.”

After a while, someone I figured must be Katherine walked over to me with Mrs. Carson. Katherine looked about fifteen, and she had orange eyes. But as I looked closer, I figured that her eyes sometimes looked orange and sometimes looked brown. Mrs. Carson said she would go to her seat, which was probably the fifth row.

“So,” Katherine began, smiling. “Hi. I’m Katherine, and I’m in charge of welcoming the new students here. And I heard that you are Winnie Carter. Welcome to Winderbritch! You’re going to love it.”

“Um, thanks.”

She checked the time. “Morning assembly’s starting soon. Let’s take a sit.” She led me to the fourth row. The school bell rang soon, and Mr. Brown came to the front of the hall. Everyone bowed to him so I did the same.

Mr. Brown cleared his throat. “Good morning, students. We have some announcements today. First of all, we have a new student today.” As he said that, all of the students turned to the side of the fourth row, where I was sitting. “She is, er, what was your name?” He turned to me.

“Winnie Carter.”

“Oh, right. Winnie Carter. Please welcome our new student.”

After that, he made some other announcements (which took more than 10 minutes) and when he was done he said, “All right students. That’s all for today. You can have breakfast now.” The silence broke and the room became noisy.

Katherine smiled. “Finally! Let’s go get some breakfast.”
