    Chapter 18: Lily’s Diary

“Here are your hats,” Penelope said. “They will take you to Harmonica Drive. You know how to use them, right?”

Kate and I nodded, while Kate snapped at Penelope; “I don’t need instructions from you!” We took our hats and pulled out the label inside. “Thanks, Penelope,” I thanked the gentle she-cat. “We’ll never forget you.”

“This isn’t farewell,” Penelope replied. “When you are done with your job, you should put your hat on and say...”

“Penelope’s bush, I know,” Lily interrupted. “We’re not coming back anyway. We are gonna live in Harmonica Drive.”

“But it isn’t defined,” I put in. “We might come back.”

“Then in case you don’t,” Penelope began. “Goodbye snails! I...”

Whiz! A strong wind blew as Lily disappeared. “We’ll apologize for Lily,” Kate said. “I don’t know what has gotten into it. Goodbye Penelope.”

Whiz! Soon, all I heard was a gush of wind. I closed my eyes shut as I spun around. When I thought I was going to throw up, I landed on a cold street. I opened my eyes and looked around. Kate appeared behind me, but Lily was gone. When I searched for it, I saw it enter a house. I looked at the house and realized that it was where Jessie and Dan lived. “Kate, over here,” I called for Kate. As Kate and I began to approach the house, I stumbled over something. It was Lily’s diary. It was flipped open that we could see Lily’s handwriting. “Lily must have dropped this,” Kate said. I nodded. I leaned toward the diary to pick it up when I saw a glimpse of a surprising sentence from it; Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not.

I stopped myself from shouting out my surprise and curiosity. Instead, my eyes skimmed the diary as quickly as they can. But Kate was much faster than them. It kicked the diary away from me before I could read a whole sentence. “Reading another’s diary?” Kate exclaimed. “That’s rude!”

“But I saw a...” I began but stopped as a shadow loomed over us. “Uh... Kate? Isn’t it... dark here?”

“Of course it’s dark,” A voice said. “My shadow’s covering you.” Kate and I gasped and looked up to see Dan with Jessie. Lily wasn’t there.

“Where’s Lily?” I asked. Not to Dan, but Jessie, because Dan freaked me out. But he answered instead of Jessie. “Lily? It is inside our house.”

“Did it tell you our situation?” Kate asked, who looked a bit frightened too. “No,” Dan answered. “Come in and warm up. Maybe you can tell us then.” Dan and Jessie guided us to their house. Jessie squealed all the way, saying that it was happy to see Kate again. Kate agreed, smiling, but I saw fright in its eyes. I felt the same fear in me too. Something in Dan freaked us out, though we didn’t know why or what made us feel like it.

When we went inside Dan’s house, he led us to the fireplace, where Lily was gazing into the fire. Dan motioned us to sit down, but Kate and I didn’t. We were both afraid that Dan might push us into the blazing fire and cook us. Dan looked amused as he watched us hesitating. “I’m not gonna push you in! Sit down! Will ya?” He echoed our thoughts. Kate and I jumped and immediately sat down.

“I’ll get you some hot cocoa,” Dan said, handing out two small pieces of cloth. Jessie crawled down from Dan and sat next to us. “Use them as blankets,” It said, pointing to Lily with its head. Lily had the cloth wrapped around itself. Kate and I nodded. I wrapped myself up with the cloth while Kate did the same. I was sitting up for a while before I noticed that I was very tired. So I lay down on the ground, relaxing as the warmth of the house overwhelmed me. I soon fell asleep.

I opened my eyes and found myself in a small dark space. “Hello?” I shouted. “Anybody in here?” Suddenly, light filled the room. I shut my eyes as the bright light blinded them. When my eyes got adapted to the light, I opened them to find myself standing in a hallway. Cobwebs and clouds of dust were everywhere. I spat out my disgust. “Where am I? In the attic?”

Suddenly, the dust began to swirl around the room, making me cough. The dust gathered, making a form of a snail. It was Lily holding its diary. “Lily?” I began, feeling worried that Lily might scold me for reading its diary earlier. “I didn’t mean to...”

Lily looked at me with unblinking eyes. It was very creepy. “Come on, Lily,” I said. “Smile. You look like a ghost!”

Lily’s mouth opened, and a long groan came out of it. “Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not. Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not. Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not.” Lily kept repeating the sentence again and again. The dust around Lily swirled around and around the room as Lily chanted. “Please Lily,” I said. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to read your diary.”

“Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not. Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not!!!”

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to! It was an accident! Please forgive me and let me go!”

“Sail?” Jessie said, poking me. “Wake up!”

I opened my eyes and realized that I had been dreaming. “Bad dream?” Jessie asked as it handed me a cup of cocoa. “Yes,” I said, shivering. I picked up the cup shakily. “Hey, be careful there. You...” Crash!

The cup shattered to the floor. The cocoa seeped into the white cloth. “Sorry!” I exclaimed. “I don’t know what has gotten into me!”

“It’s okay,” Jessie said, getting a broom and sweeping the mess up. “We’ll make you another one.”

“No thanks,” I said. “I just want to be left alone.”

Jessie looked startled for a moment before nodding. “It was just a dream Sail,” It said. “There’s nothing to be scared of.”
