  • My Thoughts on University War 3 and Why I Root for Yonsei

Lately, I’ve been really into "University War 3." To be honest, I don’t usually watch survival shows because they make me feel nervous, but this one is different. It’s so popular at school that if you don’t watch it, you can’t even join the conversation during lunch break. After watching several episodes, I have a lot of things to say about it, especially about the pressure of education in Korea and my favorite team.

First of all, I have to talk about the team I’m rooting for. I am a huge fan of the Yonsei Medical team. The reason is simple: Yonsei is one of the universities I really want to go to in the future. Watching the medical students solve those insane logic and math problems is just amazing. They look so cool when they focus, and it makes me want to study harder too. Every time they win a round, I feel like I’m the one who won. I wish I can be like them someday, but then I look at my math textbook and just sigh. Still, seeing them work as a team is really inspiring.

But even though the show is funny, I also feel a bit worried. The show focuses so much on which school is the best. In Korea, we already have a big problem with "Hak-beol" or school prestige. The show makes it look like if you aren’t from a top univeristy, you aren’t smart. But I think everyone has different talents. Some people are good at math, but others are goood at art or sports. The show doesn't really shows those talents because it only tests things like memory and calculation. I think this might makes us think that our own hard work doesn't matter if we aren't at the top.

Another things I noticed is how stressful the atmosphere is. The contestants look so tired sometimes, and the pressure must be enormous. It reminds me of our exam periods. Is it really necessary to make education a "war"? The title itself, "University War," sounds a bit scary. I think studying should be more about discovering yourself, not just fighting to be number one. But unfortunately, our society don't think like that most of the time. We are always told to compete and win.

In conclusion, I think "University War 3" is a great show because it’s entertaining and shows how hardworking students can be. I’ll keep cheering for the Yonsei Medical team until the end because they are my role models. However, I hope viewers remember that a university's name isn't everything. Even if you don't go to a famous school, you can still be a successful and happy person. We are all more than just our grades or our school labels. I just hope the show ends with a good message for everyone, not just the winners.
