Sir John's design was very advanced for the time.
It included a high water tower above the toilet.
The water rushed down and washed out the toilet.
The sewage went through a drainpipe and outside.
By the 1700s,many houses had flush toilets.
Early toilets were made of wood or iron.
They were not easy to keep clean.
Also, terrible smells would come from the drainpipes and into the houses.
In 1849,an inventor solved the problem.
He put a U-shape in the drainpipe.
This was called the water trap.
Some clean water always stayed in the trap after each flush.
Finally, the water stopped the smells from coming up into the house!
