Cooking with Kids Central Friends 17: Fish Tacos
Cooking class was over. As Jason hung up his apron, his phone beeped. So did his friends' phones.
"It's a video from Ethan!" Jason said.
As he played it, everyone watched. Even Chef was interested.
"It's Ethan surfing," Bobby said. "He's a great athlete."
     "He's so tanned!" Nina said.
     Izzie sighed. "Isn't he cool?"
Jason rolled his eyes. "I bet he wiped out a lot before this video."
     "You're just jealous," Izzie said.
Ethan sent another video. In this one, he was ordering fish tacos from a food truck. His text said, Hope everyone is having a great summer!
"Hmm," Chef said. "Why don't we make fish tacos in our next class?"
     Everyone cheered, except for Jason.

The next day Jason was excited to show off his new look. He felt cool in his sunglasses, tank top, and flip-flops.
"Maybe nobody will notice my sunburn," he thought.
His friends stared at him as he walked in. But nobody said anything.
Chef pointed to the screen. "There's our fish taco recipe. Let's start chopping vegetables."
The kids chopped cabbage and red onion.
     "Jason, you're sunburned!" Nina said.
Izzie frowned. "Sunburn harms your skin. You should wear sunscreen."
Jason shrugged. "I was just soaking up some rays."
"Jason, please juice the lime," Chef said. "And take off those sunglasses."
     "I can see fine."
"Take them off! You don't need them inside."
Jason sighed and put on his regular glasses. He had white circles around his eyes.
     Bobby chuckled. "Nice look!"
Jason ignored him and juiced the lime. Then he poured the juice over the vegetables.
Izzie added sour cream. Nina sprinkled in salt and stirred the ingredients together. Bobby put the bowl in the refrigerator to chill.
"Now we mix the spices for the fish," Chef said.
Bobby measured garlic powder. Nina poured in cumin. Jason measured the cayenne pepper. Izzie added salt and black pepper, and stirred everything.
Chef seasoned the fish. Izzie added oil to a pan and turned the heat to medium-high.
"Nina, please chop cilantro," Chef said. "Bobby, cut lime wedges."
Chef cooked the fish. Then he put the fillets on a plate. "Izzie and Jason, break these into pieces."
Jason gave him a thumbs-up. "Sure thing, dude."
The other kids burst out laughing.
     "What's so funny?" Jason snapped.
"You're not being yourself," Bobby said.
Jason frowned. "I'm tired of being myself. I'm trying something new."
Chef heated another pan and warmed the tortillas on both sides. "Now we can build our tacos."
The kids put the vegetables and fish into the warm tortillas. They each added cilantro and a squeeze of lime.
Nina looked at Jason. "Trying new things is fine. I used to play the flute, but now I'm learning piano."
"Just whatever you do, be yourself," Izzie said.
Jason took a bite of taco. It was crunchy and delicious.
"I guess you're right," he said. "I feel silly trying Ethan things. Next time I'll try new Jason things."
Bobby grinned. "Sounds like a wise idea, dude!"
