Have you seen these seabirds before? They are emperor penguins. They look very dressed up, don't they?
These emperor penguins are playing and catching fish in the ocean. But what do they do when the wind gets colder?
여러분은 이런 바닷새들을 본 적이 있나요? 그 새들은 황제펭귄들이에요. 황제펭귄들은 옷을 아주 잘 차려 입은 것처럼 보이네요. 그렇지 않아요?

"Brr! Winter must be around the corner!" says one emperor penguin.
"Yes, it is time to lay our egg," says the other.
"Oh, I can't wait to be a father!"
"으흐! 겨울이 가까이 온 게 틀림없어요!" 황제펭귄 한 마리가 말합니다.
"네, 우린 알을 낳을 때가 되었어요." 다른 황제펭귄이 말합니다.

So the two emperor penguins swim to the frozen shore of Antarctica. The weather is bitterly cold. The father finds shelter under an ice cliff.
그래서 그 두 마리의 황제펭귄들은 남극의 얼어붙은 해안으로 헤엄쳐 갑니다. 날씨가 매섭게 춥습니다. 아빠 펭귄은 얼음 절벽 아래 보금자리를 마련하네요.
Then the mother emperor penguin lays her egg.
"Dear, you did such a good job! Look at our beautiful egg! Quick, roll it onto my feet so I can keep it warm." The father emperor penguin carefully balances the egg on his feet.
그러자 엄마 황제펭귄이 알을 낳아요.
"여보, 당신 아주 잘 했어요! 우리의 아름다운 알을 봐요! 어서요. 내 발 위로 알을 굴려줘요. 알을 따뜻하게 할 수 있게요." 아빠 황제펭귄은 자기 발 위에 조심스럽게 알을 올리고 균형을 잡아요.
He makes sure the egg doesn't touch the ice. To keep the egg warm, he covers it with the extra skin over his stomach.
"Now head out to sea to eat and rest. You worked very hard," says the father.
아빠는 알이 얼음에 닿지 않는지 확인하지요. 아빠 펭귄은 알을 따뜻하게 하려고 배를 덮은 여분의 피부로 알을 덮어요.
"이제 바다로 나가서 먹고 쉬어요. 당신 정말 수고했어요." 아빠가 말해요.
"I am very tired," says the mother penguin. "But I can stay on shore. I want to stay with you and our egg."
But the father emperor penguin insists. "No, you go and rest. I will take care of our egg until you come back."
"Okay, dear, I guess I will. Please stay warm and keep our egg safe!"
"난 아주 지쳤어요." 엄마 펭귄이 말합니다. "하지만 난 해안에 머물 수 있어요. 난 당신과 우리 알과 함께 있고 싶어요."
하지만 아빠 황제펭귄이 고집합니다. "아니, 당신은 가서 쉬어요. 난 당신이 돌아올 때까지 우리의 알을 돌보겠소."
"알겠어요, 여보. 그렇게 해야겠어요. 따뜻하게 지내면서 우리의 알을 안전하게 지켜주세요!"
After the mother penguin leaves, it gets colder and colder. The father emperor penguin and his friends huddle together to keep warm. They cannot leave their eggs to hunt or fish. They must sit on their eggs for nine long weeks.

"I am getting so hungry!" thinks the father emperor penguin. "But it's my job to guard the egg and keep it warm. I hope it survives the harsh winter."
"점점 배가 고파지는군!" 아빠 펭귄은 생각합니다. "하지만 알을 지키고 따뜻하게 하는 건 내 책임이야. 난 알이 혹독한 겨울을 잘 견디어 냈으면 좋겠어."
Finally the egg begins to hatch.
"Cheep, cheep!" A fuzzy, gray emperor penguin peeps up at its father.
"Look at my beautiful baby! I am so proud!"
마침내 알이 부화하기 시작하는군요.
"짹! 짹!" 솜털이 보송보송한 회색 황제펭귄이 아빠 황제펭귄을 살짝 올려다봐요.
"이 예쁜 아기를 좀 봐요! 난 정말 자랑스러워요!"
When the mother returns, she says, "Oh, how wonderful! Look at my fuzzy little chick! Thank you, dear. Now I am strong and rested again. But look how thin you are. You have not eaten for over nine weeks. Let's take turns. Now I can take care of our baby. You must eat and rest. Our baby will need a strong father to protect him."
엄마가 돌아와서 말해요. "오, 정말 놀라워요! 솜털이 보송보송한 우리 아기 새를 보세요! 여보, 고마워요. 이제 나는 다시 튼튼해졌고 쉬었어요. 하지만 당신은 얼마나 야위었는지 보세요. 당신은 아홉 주나 먹지 못했어요. 우리 교대를 해요. 이제 내가 우리 아기를 돌보면 돼요. 당신은 먹고 쉬어야 해요. 우리 아기는 자기를 보호해 줄 강한 아빠가 필요할 거예요."
"You are right. I will be back soon." So the father emperor penguin heads to the ocean. While he is gone, the mother feeds and cares for the chick.
"당신이 옳아요. 내 곧 돌아오겠소." 그래서 아빠 황제펭귄은 바다로 향합니다. 아빠가 가고 없는 동안 엄마 펭귄이 아기 펭귄에게 먹이를 주고 돌봅니다.
Soon the father emperor penguin returns.
"Are you strong and rested?" asks the mother emperor penguin.
"Yes, I feel so much better now. Look what I brought you both from the ocean!"
곧 아빠 황제펭귄이 돌아옵니다.
"당신은 튼튼해지고 쉬었나요?" 엄마 황제펭귄이 묻습니다.
"그래요. 난 이제 아주 좋아졌어요. 내가 당신과 아기에게 주려고 바다에서 뭘 가져왔나 봐요!"
"A squid! My favorite!"
"Cheep, cheep!" says the baby. It's his favorite too.
