Hi! I’m Snowshoe Rabbit. I’m looking for something to eat. But it is not very easy because the forest is covered with snow and the trees are bare. During the winter people have nice warm houses to live in, but animals have to stay outside. So we have to do different things to survive the cold.
안녕! 난 스노우슈 토끼예요. 나는 먹을 것을 찾고 있지요. 그런데 숲이 눈으로 덮혔고 나무들은 벌거벗어서 그리 쉽지 않아요. 겨울 동안에 사람들은 따뜻한 집에서 살지만, 동물들은 바깥에서 지내야만 해요. 그래서 우리는 추위 속에서 살아남기 위해 여러가지 일을 해야 한답니다.
During the winter, you don’t see many birds in the forest because most of them have migrated. In the fall, when the weather gets cool, the birds gather together and fly south to warmer places. When people travel, they use maps, but birds travel without using any maps. It is amazing that they never get lost; they know exactly where to go.
겨울 동안에 대부분의 새들은 이동을 하기 때문에 숲에서 많은 새들을 보지 못한답니다. 가을에 날씨가 서늘해질 때 새들은 함께 모여서 더 따뜻한 남쪽으로 날아간답니다. 사람들은 여행을 할 때 지도를 사용하지만, 새들은 여행을 할 때 어떤 지도도 사용하지 않는답니다. 새들이 결코 길을 잃는 법이 없다는 것이 놀랍지요. 새들은 가야 할 곳을 정확하게 압니다.
Some birds use the sun, the moon, and the stars to guide them.
Birds are not the only creatures that migrate. The monarch butterfly flies all the way from the Rocky Mountains in Canada to Mexico. Some deer that live in the Arctic, like the caribou, travel hundreds of miles to find grasses and plants to eat during the winter months.

Even some ladybugs and snakes travel before the winter.
But many animals stay in the forest all winter long. Sometimes you can see deer, foxes, and rabbits like me in the wintertime. We don’t go away because we like the winter. In the winter, we eat whatever we can find, like moss, twigs, bark, and leaves.
심지어 일부 무당벌레들과 뱀들도 겨울이 되기 전에 이동합니다.
하지만 많은 동물들이 겨우내 숲 속에서 지냅니다. 때때로 사슴, 여우, 그리고 나 같은 토끼들을 겨울에 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 우리는 겨울을 좋아하기 때문에 떠나지 않습니다. 겨울에 우리는 이끼, 잔가지, 나무껍질, 그리고 잎사귀 같이 찾아낼 수 있는 것은 무엇이든 먹는답니다.
In order to get ready for winter, we grow new, thicker fur in the fall. My new fur is white to help me hide in the snow. Squirrels, mice, and beavers get ready for winter by gathering extra food and storing it in a safe place to eat later.
Many animals sleep during winter, like bats, squirrels, skunks, chipmunks, and bears.
겨울을 준비하기 위해 우리는 가을에 새로운 털을 두껍게 기릅니다. 나의 새로운 털은 눈 속에서 숨을 수 있도록 흰색입니다. 다람쥐, 생쥐, 그리고 비버들은 나중에 먹을 수 있도록 여분의 음식을 모아 안전한 곳에 저장하여 겨울을 준비합니다.

Sleeping during the winter is called hibernation. By hibernating, these animals save energy and are able to live on very little food.
Before winter they find a safe, warm place to sleep. Some have dens under the ground; others sleep on the ground underneath the fallen leaves. If lots of snow falls, it can actually help them stay warm, like a thick blanket.
겨울 동안에 잠을 자는 것을 '동면'이라고 부른답니다. 동면을 하여 동물들은 에너지를 아끼면서 매우 적은 양의 음식으로 살아갈 수가 있는 것이지요.
겨울이 되기 전에 동물들은 잠 잘 안전한 곳을 찾습니다. 어떤 동물들은 땅 속에 동굴을 가지고 있고, 다른 동물들은 낙엽으로 덮인 땅 위에서 잠을 잡니다. 만약 많은 눈이 내리면, 사실 두꺼운 이불처럼 동물들이 따뜻하게 지내는 데 도움이 됩니다.
Some mice sleep in dens together with many others so that they all help each other to stay warm.
Chipmunks, squirrels, and some other animals are called true hibernators. When true hibernators sleep, the temperature of their body decreases and their heart slows down, so they need less food. In fact, when you see true hibernating animals, they look like they are dead.
어떤 생쥐들은 여러 마리가 함께 굴에 모여서 지내면서 서로가 따뜻하게 지내는 데 도움을 줍니다.
줄다람쥐와 다람쥐, 그리고 몇몇 다른 동물들을 진정한 동면 동물이라고 부릅니다. 진정한 동면 동물들은 잠이 들면 체온이 떨어지고 심장박동은 느려집니다. 그래서 그런 동물들은 적은 양의 음식이 필요한 거지요. 사실, 진정한 동면을 하고 있는 동물을 보면 죽은 것처럼 보인답니다.

Other animals, like bears, sleep most of the winter as well. They are not true hibernators, however, because their body temperature cannot decrease. In order to stay warm while they hibernate, bears need to eat huge amounts of food in the fall. The extra fat stores energy to keep them warm while they sleep.
그 동물들을 만지면 굉장히 차갑지요.
곰 같은 다른 동물들 역시 겨울을 거의 다 잠으로 보냅니다. 그러나 그런 동물들은 몸의 체온이 떨어지지 않으므로, 진정한 동면 동물은 아닙니다. 동면하는 동안 체온을 따뜻하게 유지하기 위해, 곰은 엄청난 양의 음식을 가을 동안에 먹어야 합니다. 여분의 지방이 잠을 자는 동안 동물들을 따뜻하게 유지해 줍니다.
By the time spring comes, the bears have lost most of their fat.
Actually, animals do not sleep all winter long. Some animals can sleep for one month, but many animals only sleep for a few days at a time. When they get hungry, they wake up for a little while and eat some of their food.
봄이 올 때쯤이면, 곰들은 대부분의 지방을 다 소비하게 됩니다.
사실 동물들은 긴 겨울 내내 잠을 자는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 동물들은 한 달간 잠을 자지만, 많은 동물들은 한 번에 며칠 간만 잠을 잡니다. 그 동물들이 배가 고파지면, 그들은 잠깐 동안 깨어나 먹을 것을 좀 먹는답니다.
Many hibernating animals have a place in their little homes where they can go to the toilet. Also if the animals get too cold, they might die. So on very cold days, many animals wake up and get warm by shivering.
In the pond many animals hibernate as well. Some turtles and frogs swim to the bottom of the pond before the water freezes.
많은 동면 동물들은 배변을 할 수 있는 곳을 그 작은 보금자리에 가지고 있습니다. 또한 동물들은 너무 차가워지면 죽을 수도 있습니다. 그래서 매우 추운 날이면 많은 동물들은 깨어나서 몸을 흔들어 몸을 따뜻하게 합니다.
연못에서도 많은 동물들이 동면을 합니다. 어떤 거북이과 개구리는 물이 얼기 전에 연못 바닥까지 헤엄쳐 갑니다.
They dig a little hole in the mud at the bottom and spend the winter sleeping beneath the frozen ice.
What about the fish? Have you ever wondered what happens to the fish when the water is frozen? Most fish stay awake for the winter, but they are very quiet and still. They go down to the bottom of the pond where the water is not frozen and wait for spring to come.
그 동물들은 바닥의 진흙에다가 작은 구멍을 파고 꽁꽁 언 얼음 밑에서 잠을 자면서 겨울을 보냅니다.
물고기들은 어떨까요? 물이 얼게 되면 물고기들은 어떻게 될지 궁금해 본 적이 있나요? 대부분의 물고기들은 겨울 동안에 깨어서 지내지만, 아주 조용하고 움직이지 않습니다. 물고기들은 물이 얼지 않은 연못 바닥으로 내려가서 봄이 오기를 기다립니다.
It’s lonely here in the winter. But after their long sleep, my animal friends will come out of their houses and enjoy a fresh new spring.
