Once upon a time, there lived a married couple who desperately wanted to have a child. Their house overlooked a beautiful garden. Every day from her window, the wife looked down at all the flowers and herbs. Her favorite was the rapunzel herb. "If only I had a daughter as beautiful as that rapunzel," she wished. Finally the wife became pregnant.
옛날 옛적에 아이를 몹시 가지고 싶어하는 부부가 살았습니다. 그들의 집에서는 아름다운 정원이 내려다보였습니다. 아내는 매일 창문에서 모든 꽃과 약초를 내려다보았습니다. 그녀는 라푼젤 약초를 가장 좋아했습니다. "만약에 내가 저 라푼젤 약초만큼이나 예쁜 딸을 가질 수 있다면." 그녀는 바랐습니다. 마침내 아내가 임신을 했습니다.
One day the wife, pointing to the rapunzel, asked her husband, "Darling, would you bring me some of those herbs?"
"But . . . but . . . that’s the witch’s garden," he stammered.
"If I don’t have some rapunzel, I’ll die!" she said angrily.
Everyone was afraid of the old witch. She had great powers and cast spells on people.
하루는 아내가 라푼젤 약초를 가리키며 그녀의 남편에게 물었습니다. "여보, 저 약초를 좀 가져다 주겠어요?"
"하지만…… 하지만…… 저건 마녀의 정원이잖소." 남편이 더듬거리며 말했습니다.
"만약 라푼젤 약초를 먹지 못하면 죽을 것 같아요!" 그녀가 화를 내며 말했습니다.
모든 사람들은 그 늙은 마녀를 무서워했습니다. 그녀는 대단한 능력을 가지고 있었고 사람들에게 마법을 걸었습니다.
No one dared enter her garden, knowing they would probably not come out alive!
The wife refused to eat anything and began to look pale. Worrying about her health, as well as the baby’s, the husband finally gave in. "I’ll get the herbs for you," he said.
아마도 살아 나오지 못할 것이기 때문에 감히 아무도 마녀의 정원에 들어가지 않았습니다!
아내는 아무것도 먹지 않았고 창백해지기 시작했습니다. 그녀와 아기의 건강이 걱정된 남편은 결국 항복했습니다. "내가 그 약초를 가져다 주겠소." 그가 말했습니다.
"Thank you, honey," she said. She blew him a kiss and clapped her hands.
That night the husband crept into the witch’s garden and stole some rapunzel. He brought it to his wife, who immediately ate it up. "Bring me fresh rapunzel every night!" she said happily.
"고마워요, 여보." 그녀가 말했습니다. 그녀는 손뼉을 치며 키스를 날려보냈습니다.
그날 밤 남편은 마녀의 정원에 숨어들어가서 라푼젤 약초를 조금 훔쳤습니다. 그가 그의 아내에게 그것을 가져다 주자 그녀는 바로 먹었습니다. "매일 밤 싱싱한 라푼젤 약초를 가져다 주세요!" 그녀는 행복해 하며 말했습니다.
For a few nights after that, the husband bravely did as his wife asked until one evening, when he got caught by the witch herself. "So you are the thief stealing my rapunzel!" she accused angrily.
"Please have mercy," he pleaded. "My pregnant wife said she would die if she couldn’t have some."
그 후 며칠 동안 밤에 남편은 용감하게 아내가 원하는 대로 했습니다. 어느 날 밤, 그는 마녀에게 잡히게 되었습니다. "그러니까 네가 내 라푼젤 약초를 훔치는 도둑이구나!" 그녀는 화를 내며 죄를 추궁했습니다.

"Take as much as you like," the witch said, softening her voice. "But in return, the child born to you will be mine!" The husband, frightened out of his wits, had no choice but to agree.
A few months later, a baby girl was born. The couple’s happiness lasted only a short time because soon after, the witch appeared.
"그럼 가져가고 싶은 만큼 가져가거라." 마녀가 목소리를 부드럽게 하더니 말했습니다. "하지만 그 대신에 태어나는 아이는 내 것이야!" 남편은 몹시 겁을 먹고 별수 없이 동의했습니다.
그로부터 몇 달 후 여자아이가 태어났습니다. 하지만 부부의 행복은 마녀가 곧 나타나는 바람에 얼마 가지 못했습니다.
She snatched the baby from the astonished wife and said, "I will call her Rapunzel and raise her as my own." Without another word, she vanished, taking Rapunzel with her.
마녀는 깜짝 놀란 아내로부터 아기를 낚아채더니 말했습니다. "나는 이 아기를 라푼젤이라고 부르고 내 아기처럼 키울 것이다." 더 이상 아무 말도 하지 않고 그녀는 라푼젤을 데리고 사라졌습니다.
Rapunzel grew up to be an extremely beautiful girl. The witch did not want others to see her beauty, so she shut Rapunzel up in a tower. This tower, located in the forest, had no stairs or doors. There was only one way to enter it.
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" shouted the witch.
라푼젤은 아주 아름다운 처녀로 자랐습니다. 마녀는 라푼젤의 아름다움을 다른 사람들에게 보여주는 것이 싫어서 그녀를 탑 안에 가두었습니다. 숲 속에 있는 이 탑은 계단이나 문이 없었습니다. 거기 들어갈 수 있는 방법은 단 한 가지가 있었습니다.
"라푼젤, 라푼젤! 네 머리카락을 내리렴!" 마녀가 소리쳤습니다.
From the small window dropped a thick golden rope. The witch climbed up the strange, shiny rope to the top of the tower. But in fact, it was no rope at all. Rapunzel had magnificent, long golden hair that reached past her feet. Whenever the witch called out, Rapunzel dropped her hair out the window.
작은 창문으로부터 두꺼운 황금색 줄이 떨어졌습니다. 마녀는 그 반짝이는 이상한 줄을 잡고 탑 위로 올라갔습니다. 하지만 사실 그것은 줄이 아니었습니다. 라푼젤은 자신의 키보다도 훨씬 긴 멋진 금발을 가지고 있었습니다. 마녀가 그녀를 부를 때마다 라푼젤은 그녀의 머리카락을 창밖으로 떨어뜨렸습니다.
A few years later, the king’s son happened to be riding through the forest. He imagined that he heard an angel singing and stopped to listen. "No, it’s the voice of a maiden!" he realized. The sweet melancholy voice was coming from a tower just ahead.
몇 년 후, 왕의 아들이 말을 타고 숲 속을 지나가게 되었습니다. 그는 천사가 노래하는 것을 들었다고 상상하고 그것을 듣기 위해 멈췄습니다. "아니, 어떤 아가씨의 목소리잖아!" 그는 깨달았습니다. 그 달콤하고 슬픈 목소리는 바로 앞에 있는 어느 탑으로부터 들려왔습니다.
Upon seeing Rapunzel in the window, the prince fell deeply in love with her. He longed to go up and declare his feelings to her. "But how can I get inside that tower?" He was about to find out.
He saw the witch approach the tower. "Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" shouted the witch.
창문에 있는 그녀를 보자마자 왕자는 라푼젤을 깊이 사랑하게 되었습니다. 그는 올라가서 자신의 감정을 그녀에게 고백하기를 간절히 원했습니다. "하지만 어떻게 내가 저 탑 안으로 들어갈 수 있지?" 그는 궁리했습니다. 그는 곧 알게 되었습니다.

The prince watched in amazement as a long golden rope descended from the window. The prince waited until the witch left and then called out loudly, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" A few minutes later, the rope appeared, and the prince began his climb.
왕자는 길다란 황금줄이 창문으로부터 내려오는 것을 놀라서 바라보았습니다. 왕자는 마녀가 떠나기를 기다린 다음 크게 외쳤습니다. "라푼젤, 라푼젤! 네 머리카락을 내려라!" 잠시 후, 줄이 나타나자 왕자는 올라가기 시작했습니다.
Rapunzel was shocked when she saw a strange man enter through the tower window. "I mean no harm," the prince spoke gently. He confessed his feelings for her and asked if she would marry him. Rapunzel’s heart welled with joy, and she accepted his proposal.
Rapunzel and the prince continued to meet secretly.
라푼젤은 어느 이상한 남자가 탑의 창문을 통해 들어오는 것을 보고 너무나도 놀랐습니다. "당신을 해치려고 하는 게 아니에요." 왕자는 부드럽게 말했습니다. 왕자는 그녀에 대한 그의 감정을 고백했고, 그녀에게 그와 결혼해달라고 했습니다. 라푼젤의 가슴은 기쁨으로 넘쳤고 그녀는 그의 결혼 신청을 승낙했습니다.
라푼젤과 왕자는 계속 몰래 만났습니다.
On each visit, the prince brought some silk threads. Rapunzel used the silk to make a rope so she could escape from the tower.
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" shouted the witch at her usual time. As she let her hair fall down, Rapunzel thought happily to herself that today would be her last day as a captive. In a few hours, the prince would come on his horse and . . .
방문할 때마다 왕자는 비단실을 가져왔습니다. 라푼젤은 그 비단실을 이용해 탑에서 도망칠 때 사용할 줄을 만들었습니다.
"라푼젤, 라푼젤! 네 머리카락을 내려라!" 마녀가 평상시와 같은 시간에 소리쳤습니다. 그녀는 머리카락을 늘어뜨리면서 오늘이 마녀의 포로로서 마지막 날인 것을 행복하게 떠올렸습니다. 몇 시간 후면 왕자가 그의 말을 타고 와서…….
"What are you so happy about?" The witch interrupted Rapunzel’s thoughts.
"Uh . . . nothing," Rapunzel stammered.
"What’s that?" The witch pointed to something next to the bed. Rapunzel stared in horror as the witch held up the prince’s hat.
"왜 그렇게 기분이 좋은 거니?" 마녀가 라푼젤의 생각을 방해했습니다.
"어…… 아무것도 아니에요." 라푼젤이 더듬거렸습니다.
"저게 뭐니?" 마녀는 침대 옆에 있는 것을 가리켰습니다. 마녀가 왕자의 모자를 집어들자 라푼젤은 공포에 질려 바라보았습니다.
"Ungrateful girl! You dare deceive me?" yelled the witch.
"I . . . I love him! We’re going to get married!" Rapunzel managed to reply.
The witch’s eyes turned red as she pulled out a pair of scissors. Then in the blink of an eyeㅡsnip, snip!ㅡRapunzel’s braid fell to the floor. The witch then banished Rapunzel to the forest.
"이런 은혜를 모르는 아이 같으니라고! 감히 나를 속이려는 것이냐?" 마녀가 소리쳤습니다.
"나는…… 나는 그를 사랑해요! 우리는 결혼할 거예요!" 라푼젤이 간신히 대답했습니다.
마녀의 눈이 붉어지더니 가위를 꺼냈습니다. 그리고 눈깜짝할 사이에 싹둑 싹둑! 라푼젤의 땋은 머리카락이 바닥에 떨어졌습니다. 그러고는 마녀가 라푼젤을 숲 속으로 내쫓았습니다.
That evening the prince arrived, unaware of what had happened. "Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" he called out joyfully. The end of the braid fell and hit his head. "Ouch!" The prince rubbed his head. Climbing the tower, he thought only of getting married. "Tonight will be the last time I . . ." Suddenly he screamed. Looking out the window at him was the witch.
그날 밤 왕자는 무슨 일이 일어났는지 모르고 도착했습니다. "라푼젤, 라푼젤! 당신의 머리카락을 내려주세요!" 그는 즐거운 목소리로 불렀습니다. 땋은 머리 끝이 내려와 그의 머리를 쳤습니다. "아야!" 왕자가 그의 머리를 문지르며 말했습니다. 탑 위로 기어올라가면서 그의 유일한 생각은 결혼하는 것에 대한 것뿐이었습니다. "오늘 밤은 마지막으로 내가……." 갑자기 그가 비명을 질렀습니다. 창문에서 그를 바라보고 있는 것은 마녀였습니다.
The prince was speechless.
"So you tried to steal what’s not yours!" said the witch, moving closer. Before she could cast a spell on him, the prince let go of Rapunzel’s hair. He fell into a thorny bush that pierced his eyes. Blinded, the prince got on his horse and took off for the forest.
왕자는 말이 나오지 않았습니다.
"그러니까, 네가 네 것이 아닌 것을 훔치려고 했단 말이지!" 마녀는 좀 더 가까이 다가오며 말했습니다. 마녀가 그에게 마법을 걸기 전에 왕자는 라푼젤의 머리카락을 손에서 놓았습니다. 그는 가시 덤불에 떨어져 눈이 찔렸습니다. 눈이 먼 왕자는 말을 타고 숲을 향해 떠났습니다.
Days turned to weeks, and weeks turned to months. The blind prince searched and searched for his beloved. He could find no trace of Rapunzel.
After several years the prince was about to give up and return to his palace when he heard a familiar sound. "Rapunzel? Is that you?" he called out toward the sweet singing voice.
The singing stopped abruptly, and the woman turned around.
며칠은 몇 주가 되었고, 몇 주는 몇 달이 되었습니다. 눈이 먼 왕자는 그가 사랑하는 사람을 찾고 또 찾았습니다. 그는 라푼젤의 흔적을 찾을 수가 없었습니다.
몇 년이 지난 후, 왕자가 포기하고 궁전으로 돌아가려고 했을 때 그는 친숙한 소리를 들었습니다. "라푼젤? 당신인가요?" 그는 달콤한 노래 부르는 목소리에게 물었습니다.
노래 소리가 갑자기 멈추더니 그 여자가 뒤로 돌았습니다.
"My prince, you found me!" she cried.
As tears of joy ran down his face, the prince saw a bright light. True love reopened his eyes. Not even the witch’s hate could separate them forever. The prince took Rapunzel back to his palace, and they lived happily ever after.
"나의 왕자님! 나를 찾으셨군요!" 그녀가 외쳤습니다.
기쁨의 눈물이 그의 얼굴에 흘러내릴 때 왕자는 밝은 빛을 보았습니다. 진정한 사랑이 그의 눈을 다시 뜨게 해주었던 것입니다. 마녀의 증오조차도 그들을 영원히 떨어뜨려 놓을 수는 없었습니다. 왕자는 라푼젤을 궁전으로 데리고 가서 오래오래 행복하게 살았답니다.
