Dr. Dolittle and the animals missed Polynesia and Chee-Chee very much. But they knew Polynesia and Chee-Chee were happier in Africa.
     "Where are we now, Dr. Dolittle?" asked Dab-Dab.
     "I’m not sure," Dr. Dolittle scratched his head.
닥터 두리틀과 동물들은 폴리네시아와 치치가 매우 보고 싶었습니다. 하지만 그들은 폴리네시아와 치치가 아프리카에서 더 행복하리라는 것을 알았습니다.
     "닥터 두리틀, 지금 우린 어디에 있는 거죠?" 댑댑이 물었습니다.
     "확실하지 않아." 닥터 두리틀은 머리를 긁적였습니다.
     "Dr. Dolittle! Dr. Dolittle!" Voices were calling from the sky.
     "Oh, hello!" the doctor waved to some birds.
     "You’re going the wrong way!" one shouted.
     "These are Barbary waters!" another one said.
     "닥터 두리틀! 닥터 두리틀!" 하늘에서 여럿의 목소리가 부르고 있었습니다.
     "아, 안녕!" 닥터 두리틀은 몇몇 새들에게 손을 흔들었습니다.
     "당신은 지금 잘못된 방향으로 가고 있어요!" 한 마리가 소리쳤습니다.
     "여기는 바르바리 해역이에요!" 다른 새가 말했습니다.
     "Barbary? What’s that?" asked the doctor.
     "They’re pirates," the other bird whispered.
     Dab-Dab began to shake with fear. "Pirates? Oh, no!" he quacked loudly.
     "바르바리? 그게 뭐야?" 닥터 두리틀은 물었습니다.
     "그들은 해적들이에요." 또 다른 새가 속삭였습니다.
     댑댑은 무서움에 떨기 시작했습니다. "해적들? 오, 안돼!" 댑댑은 큰 소리로 꽥꽥 울었습니다.
     "The Barbary pirates wait for boats," explained the bird. "After they attack the boat, they steal everything in it."
     "The pirates take people, too," said another bird. "Sometimes, they throw people into the water!"
     "바르바리의 해적들은 배를 기다립니다." 새는 설명했습니다. "그들은 배를 공격한 다음, 그 안에 모든 것을 훔칩니다."
     "해적들은 사람들도 데려가요." 다른 새가 말했습니다. "때로는 사람들을 물 속에 던져넣기도 해요!"
     Dr. Dolittle did not want to meet any pirates.
     "Go this way! You’ll be safe!" the birds cried out. So the doctor sailed the boat away from the Barbary waters.
     "Whew! That was close!" Dr. Dolittle wiped his forehead.
     닥터 두리틀은 해적을 한 명도 만나고 싶지 않았습니다.
     "이쪽으로 가세요! 여러분은 안전할 거예요!" 새들은 소리쳤습니다. 그리하여 닥터 두리틀은 배를 조종하여 바르바리의 해역을 떠났습니다.
     "휴! 큰일 날 뻔했다!" 닥터 두리틀은 이마를 닦았습니다.
The next day, Dr. Dolittle forgot all about the Barbary pirates.
     "Mmmm . . . I smell roast beef . . . ," Jip was talking in his sleep. Dr. Dolittle laughed. "Apple pie . . . potatoes and . . . ," Jip mumbled.
     "Yummy! I smell roast beef!" Gub-Gub said happily.  
     Dr. Dolittle sniffed the air. "Jip smells roast beef, too."
그 다음날 닥터 두리틀은 바르바리의 해적들에 대해서 전부 잊어버렸습니다.
     "음…… 쇠고기 구이 냄새가 나……." 지프가 잠꼬대를 했습니다. 닥터 두리틀은 웃엇습니다. "애플 파이…… 감자 그리고……." 지프가 중얼거렸습니다.
     "맛있겠다! 쇠고기 구이 냄새가 난다!" 겁겁은 기쁜 듯 말했습니다.
     닥터 두리틀은 공기를 들이마셨습니다. "지프도 쇠고기 구이 냄새를 맡았어."
     "Maybe it’s from that ship!" Gub-Gub pointed.
     "Uh, Doctor," Dab-Dab’s voice shook.
     "Dogs have a good sense of smell. Almost as good as pigs," Gub-Gub said.
     "Dr. Dolittle . . . uh . . . ," Dab-Dab pointed but couldn’t speak.
     "What is it, Dab-Dab?" Dr. Dolittle asked.
     "저 배에서 나는 것일지도 몰라!" 겁겁이 가리키며 말했습니다.
     "어, 닥터 두리틀." 댑댑의 목소리가 떨렸습니다.
     "개들은 냄새를 잘 맡아. 거의 돼지들만큼 잘 맡지." 겁겁이 말했습니다.
     "닥터 두리틀…… 어……." 댑댑은 손으로 가리켰지만 말은 하지 못했습니다.
     "댑댑, 무슨 일이야?" 닥터 두리틀이 물었습니다.
     Jip was still sleeping. "Trouble, bad men. I smell five, no, six men . . . grrrrrr," he growled. Then he barked so loudly he woke up. "I had a terrible dream. I . . . Dr. Dolittle!" Jip suddenly jumped up.
     A big ship with red sails was coming toward them.
     "It’s the Barbary pirates," whispered Dab-Dab.
     지프는 아직 자고 있었습니다. "큰일, 나쁜 남자들. 다섯, 아니, 여섯 명의 남자들 냄새가 나…… 으르렁." 지프는 으르렁거렸습니다. 그런 다음 지프는 아주 크게 짖어서 잠에서 깼습니다. "끔찍한 꿈을 꿨어요. 저는…… 닥터 두리틀!" 지프는 갑자기 뛰어 올랐습니다.
     빨간 돛을 단 커다란 배가 그들을 향해 오고 있었습니다.
     "바르바리의 해적들이야." 댑댑이 속삭였습니다.
     Dr. Dolittle gave orders. "We must put more sails on our boat," he shouted. "Jip! Gub-Gub! Find all the sails. Bring them to me!"
     The pirate ship moved closer and closer.
     닥터 두리틀은 명령을 내렸습니다. "우린 배에 돛을 더 달아야 한다." 그가 소리쳤습니다. "지프! 겁겁! 돛들을 전부 찾아. 그것을 나에게 가져와!"
     해적선은 더욱더 가까이 다가왔습니다.
Dr. Dolittle used every sail on the boat. But the boat was still not fast enough.
     "What do we do?" cried Gub-Gub.
     "Too-Too! Find the birds!" Dr. Dolittle told the owl.
닥터 두리틀은 배에 있는 모든 돛을 사용했습니다. 하지만 배는 아직도 충분히 빠르지 않았습니다.
     "어떻게 하지?" 겁-겁이 외쳤습니다.
     "투투! 새들을 찾아!" 닥터 두리틀이 부엉이에게 말했습니다.
     Too-Too came back with two birds. "Only two birds?" barked Jip.
     "The rest are coming!" one bird called down.
     "Bring all the rope you have. Quickly!" shouted the other one.
     투투는 두 마리의 새들과 함께 돌아왔습니다. "겨우 두 마리?" 지프가 짖었습니다.
     "나머지는 오고 있어요!" 한 마리의 새가 아래쪽으로 소리쳤습니다.
     "가지고 있는 밧줄을 모두 가져오세요. 빨리요!" 다른 한 마리가 소리쳤습니다.
     Dr. Dolittle brought the rope. "Make the rope into a lot of thin strings," said one bird. Soon they had hundreds of thin strings. Dr. Dolittle tied the ends to the boat.
     "Now what?" he asked the bird.
     닥터 두리틀이 밧줄을 가져왔습니다. "그 밧줄을 여러 개의 가는 끈으로 만드세요." 새 한 마리가 말했습니다. 곧 그들에게는 수백 개의 가는 끈이 있었습니다. 닥터 두리틀이 끈들의 끝을 배에 묶었습니다.
     "이제 어떻게 하지?" 그가 새에게 물었습니다.
     Suddenly the sky started to get dark. There was a low rumbling sound.
     "What’s that noise?" Gub-Gub asked.
     "I don’t know," Jip replied. He did not push the pig away this time.
     "Look up there!" Too-Too shouted excitedly. Above them hundreds of birds covered the sky.
     갑자기 하늘이 어두워지기 시작했습니다. 낮게 우르렁거리는 소리가 났습니다.
     "저게 무슨 소리지?" 겁겁이 물었습니다.
     "모르겠어." 지프가 대답했습니다. 이번에는 돼지를  밀어내지 않았습니다.
     "저기 위를 봐!" 투투는 흥분한 듯 소리쳤습니다. 그들의 위로 수백 마리의 새들이 하늘을 덮었습니다.
     Each bird took a piece of string. "Okay, everyone! Hang on!" said a little bird. Together, the birds pulled the strings. Dr. Dolittle’s boat nearly flew in the air. It moved faster than the pirates’ ship.
     새들은 각각 한 개의 끈을 집었습니다. "자, 여러분! 꽉 붙잡으세요!" 새 한 마리가 말했습니다. 새들은 모두 함께 끈을 당겼습니다. 닥터 두리틀의 배는 거의 하늘로 날아올랐습니다. 해적들의 배보다 빨리 움직였습니다.
     All the animals, except Dab-Dab, began to laugh. "Yippee! This is fun!" shouted Jip.
     "Look! I’m flying!" cried Gub-Gub. Shortly, the red sails disappeared.
     댑댑을 제외한 모든 동물이 웃기 시작했습니다. "야호! 이거 재미있다!" 지프가 소리쳤습니다.
     "이것 봐! 내가 날고 있어!" 겁겁이 소리쳤습니다. 얼마 안 가서 그 빨간 돛은 사라졌습니다.
