Ambition: it can spur a man to greatness, but it can also turn a good man to evil. The story of Macbeth, who became King of Scotland through murder, is the story of one such man. The story begins on a barren Scottish heath where three witches are making their plans.
"Where shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?" asked the first witch.
"Before the setting of the sun, when the battle is lost and won, upon the heath to meet Macbeth!" the second witch answered.
The third one chanted, "Fair is foul, and foul is fair," and they disappeared into the filthy fog.
At the same time, at a camp near a battlefield, three men were also talking about Macbeth. King Duncan of Scotland and Ross, one of his noblemen, were listening to a wounded soldier. "At first, the battle’s outcome was uncertain," the soldier said.

"우리 셋이 언제 다시 만날까? 천둥과 번개가 칠 때, 아니면 비올 때?" 첫 번째 마녀가 물었다.
"전투의 승리와 패배가 가려지는 때인 해지기 전에 만나야지. 황야에서 맥베스를 맞이하기 위해!" 두 번째 마녀가 답했다.
세 번째 마녀가 노래를 했다. "아름다움은 추하고 추한 것은 아름답도다." 이렇게 말하더니 이 셋은 지독한 안개 속으로 사라졌다.
같은 시간 전쟁터 근처 야영지에서 세 남자가 맥베스에 대해 이야기하고 있었다. 스코틀랜드의 덩컨 왕과 그의 휘하 귀족 중 하나인 로스가 부상당한 병사의 말을 듣고 있었다. "처음에는 전투의 결과가 불확실했습니다." 병사의 말이었다.
"The rebels swarmed around us, but our two captains, Macbeth and Banquo, beat them back madly. They were like two lions among kittens! Then, with his sword, brave Macbeth carved a bloody path through the enemy until he faced the thane of Cawdor. With two strokes, he cut down the traitorous leader and returned carrying his head."
"The victory is ours," said Ross, after the soldier was carried out. "Your kinsman, Macbeth, fought bravely."
"Yes," said Duncan, "and what the traitor has lost, Macbeth has gained! I have decided that Macbeth will be the new thane of Cawdor."
As Banquo and Macbeth rode back from the battle, the sunlight was swallowed up by a sudden fog. "I have never seen such a foul and fair day," Macbeth said. They stopped. Before them, pointing their crooked fingers at Macbeth, stood the three witches.
"What are these withered creatures?" said Banquo.
"폭도들이 우리 주변에 물밀 듯 밀려들었지만, 우리를 이끄시는 두 분의 대장, 맥베스님과 뱅쿼님이 그들을 맹렬하게 쳐부쉈습니다. 마치 고양이 무리 가운데 두 마리 사자 같았습니다! 그러다가 용감한 맥베스님이 칼을 드시더니 적진을 통과하며 피의 길을 뚫어 코더의 영주와 마주하셨습니다. 칼을 단 두 번 휘두르시더니 그 반역도당의 대장을 베시고는 머리를 가지고 돌아오셨습니다."
"승리가 우리 것이옵니다." 그 병사가 들려 나간 후 로스가 말했다. "전하의 친족인 맥베스가 용감히 싸웠습니다."
"그렇구나." 덩컨이 말했다. "반역자가 잃은 것을 맥베스가 가졌도다! 맥베스를 새로운 코더의 영주로 삼을 작정이다."
뱅쿼와 맥베스가 말을 타고 전쟁터에서 돌아오는데 갑작스런 안개가 햇빛을 삼켜버렸다. "이렇게나 화창하고도 궂은 날씨는 본 적이 없소." 맥베스가 말했다. 그들은 말을 멈추었다. 그들 앞에는 세 명의 마녀가 굽은 손가락으로 맥베스를 가리키며 서 있었다.
"이 시들어버린 것들은 무엇인가?" 뱅쿼가 말했다.
"Speak, if you can," called Macbeth. "What are you?"
"All hail Macbeth!" said the first witch.
"Hail to thee, Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor," said the second.
With a voice like a crow, the third witch croaked, "Hail Macbeth, who shall be king!"
As Macbeth stood in bewilderment, the witches turned to Banquo and said, "Lesser than Macbeth, and greater. Not you, but your descendants shall be kings." Then they vanished, melting into the air. The two men were astounded. What did these words mean? Had it all been just a trick of their tired minds?
The sun broke through the fog, and Ross rode up to meet them. "Macbeth, the king has heard the news of your success and thanks you," Ross said. "He has asked me to name you most worthy Thane of Cawdor. That title is now yours."
"말할 수 있다면 해보라." 맥베스가 외쳤다. "너희들은 누구냐?"
"모두 맥베스에 경배하라!" 첫 번째 마녀가 말했다.
"당신께 경배드리오, 맥베스, 코더의 영주시여." 두 번째 마녀가 말했다.
까마귀와 같은 목소리로 세 번째 마녀가 음산하게 말했다. "맥베스에게 경배하라. 왕이 되실 분이시다."
맥베스가 어리둥절해서 서 있자, 마녀들은 뱅쿼를 보더니 말했다. "맥베스보다는 못하지만, 더 위대한 자여. 너는 왕이 되지 못하지만 네 후손들은 왕이 될 것이다." 그러고 나서 이들은 공기 속으로 녹듯이 사라져 버렸다. 두 남자는 놀라워했다. 이 말들은 대체 무슨 뜻인가? 지친 마음이 빚어낸 환영을 보았단 말인가?
태양이 안개를 헤치고 불쑥 나오자, 이들을 맞으러 로스가 말을 타고 왔다. "맥베스, 전하께서 자네의 성공에 대해 들으시고 감사하고 계시네." 로스가 말을 이었다. "전하께서는 자네를 존귀한 코더의 영주라 칭하라 하시었네. 이제 그 작위는 자네 것이네."
A perplexed look came over Macbeth’s face. The second witch’s words had just come true! Did this mean the third witch’s prophecy would also come true? He would be king! "Banquo," he whispered, "did you hear? I am the thane of Cawdor! Don’t you hope that your children will be kings?"
"It may not be," Banquo whispered back. "Sometimes the devil’s servants tempt us with truth to lead us into evil."
Ross spoke up again. He said that King Duncan would dine at Macbeth’s castle to honor him in person. As Macbeth headed home, thoughts rushed through his mind. "I shall be king!" he repeated to himself. But how could this happen while King Duncan lived? It would take murder. No, that was too horrible! Luck had made him the thane of Cawdor; luck would make him king.
Macbeth arrived at his castle and told his wife everything that had happened. Lady Macbeth was elated. "My dearest partner in greatness," she told him, "you shall have what the witches promised."
이상한 표정이 맥베스의 얼굴에 떠올랐다. 두 번째 마녀의 말이 막 실현되었던 것이다! 이것은 세 번째 마녀의 예언도 실현될 것이라는 뜻인가? 왕이 될 수 있다니! "뱅쿼," 맥베스가 속삭였다. "들었는가? 이제 나는 코더의 영주일세. 자네는 자네 후손들이 왕이 되기를 바라지 않는가?"

로스가 다시 목소리를 높여 말했다. 그는 덩컨왕이 직접 맥베스를 치하하기 위해 맥베스의 성에서 만찬을 함께할 것이라고 말했다. 집으로 향하는 맥베스의 머리 속에 여러가지 생각들이 밀려들었다. "맥베스가 왕이 될 것이라!" 스스로 되뇌어 보았다. 하지만 덩컨왕이 살아있는데 어찌 이런 일이 일어날 수 있겠는가? 그렇게 되려면 살인을 해야 할 텐데. 안 돼, 그건 너무 끔찍해! 운이 좋아 코더의 영주가 되었으니, 운이 또 왕으로 만들어 줄 것이었다.
맥베스는 성에 도착하여 일어났던 일들을 모두 부인에게 알렸다. 맥베스 부인은 기쁨에 넘쳤다. "위대하신 저의 반려자시여." 맥베스 부인이 말했다. "마녀들이 약속했던 대로 될 겁니다."
Her husband went off to remove his armor and clean off the grime of the battle. Lady Macbeth stood alone in the great hall, thinking. "My husband has ambition," she said to herself, "but not the villainy to go with it. He is too full of human kindness to take the quickest path to greatness. With my tongue, I’ll pour unholy courage into his ear!"
Just then a trumpet sounded to signal that King Duncan had arrived. He was accompanied by his two sons and many noblemen. Lady Macbeth heard the servants running to open the gate. Night was falling. She went to a window and looked up at the dark clouds, her mind on murder. "Come, dark night," she called. "Make my blood run thick and cold!"
Macbeth entered the hall and Lady Macbeth turned from the window. "The king has arrived," she said.
"Good," said Macbeth, "He will sleep here tonight."

바로 그때 덩컨 왕이 도착했음을 알리는 나팔 소리가 들려왔다. 왕은 두 아들과 많은 귀족들을 거느리고 있었다. 맥베스 부인은 하인들이 성문을 열러 달려가는 소리를 들었다. 밤이 무르익고 있었다. 맥베스 부인은 창으로 가서는 살인을 생각하며 먹구름을 올려다 보았다. "오너라, 검은 밤이여." 그녀가 외쳤다. "내 피가 짙고 차갑게 흐르게 하라!"
맥베스가 연회장에 들어서자 맥베스 부인은 창문에서 돌아서며 말했다. "전하께서 오셨습니다."
"잘됐구려." 맥베스가 말했다. "오늘밤 여기서 묵으실 거요."
"Ah, the future is ours!" she said. As they walked to the courtyard, Lady Macbeth explained to her husband how easy it would be to murder Duncan while he slept. "He shall not see tomorrow’s sun," she said. Macbeth thought again of the witches’ promise, looked at his wife, and agreed.
King Duncan smiled broadly as they approached. "Your castle has a sweet and pleasant air," he said. He hugged Macbeth and turned to face the gathered noblemen. Banquo was there and Ross, as well as the king’s sons, Malcolm and Donaldbain. In a loud voice for all to hear, Duncan thanked Macbeth for his bravery and service. Then the king took Lady Macbeth’s arm and chatted pleasantly with her as they walked ahead.
Macbeth walked by himself. "If it were done, it should be done quickly," he said to himself. "Oh, my thoughts are evil . . . but with one blow─success! And success would end these troubled thoughts."
"아, 미래는 우리 것이로군요!" 멕베스 부인이 대답했다. 성 뜰로 걸어 나가며 맥베스 부인은 덩컨왕이 잠들어 있는 동안 살해하는 것이 얼마나 쉬운지를 남편에게 설명했다. "왕은 내일 뜨는 해는 보지 못하게 될 겁니다." 맥베스 부인이 말했다. 맥베스는 마녀들의 약속을 다시 한 번 생각해보고, 부인을 보더니, 그 말에 동의했다.
덩컨왕은 이들이 다가가자 활짝 웃으며 말했다. "그대의 성은 공기가 달콤하고 쾌적하도다." 왕은 맥베스를 껴안으며 인사하고는 돌아서서 모인 귀족들을 마주했다. 뱅쿼도 거기에 있었고, 왕의 아들들인 맬컴과 도널베인뿐만 아니라 로스도 그 자리에 있었다. 모두들 듣도록 큰 목소리로 덩컨은 맥베스의 용기와 업적에 감사했다. 그러고는 왕은 맥베스 부인의 팔을 잡더니 즐겁게 담소를 나누며 앞으로 걸어갔다.
맥베스는 혼자 걸어가며 혼잣말을 했다. "이 일을 하려면 재빨리 해치워야 하는데. 이런, 내 생각이 악독하구나…… 하지만, 단 한 번만 칼을 휘두르면 성공일 텐데. 성공하면 이 괴로운 생각들도 끝나리라."
In the hall, Macbeth saw his wife and the king sitting together and smiling, and his thoughts changed. "I am Duncan’s kinsman and his host. I should be protecting him from murder, not planning to use the knife myself!"
After the feast, Macbeth told his wife, "This business will go no further."
"Has your courage fallen asleep?" she asked.
"Quiet, woman! I dare to do anything that makes a man a man!"
"Then be more than a man, be king!" said Lady Macbeth. She explained how, during dinner, she had made sure that Duncan’s two servants drank too much wine. They would sleep heavily, leaving Duncan unguarded. It would be easy to kill Duncan and then cover the servants with his blood in order to frame them for the murder.
"My wife!" Macbeth said with admiration. "I swear, there’s nothing soft in you! It is settled. Let’s attempt this terrible task."
연회장에서 맥베스는 자신의 부인과 왕이 미소지으며 함께 앉은 것을 보고는 생각이 바뀌었다. "나는 덩컨왕의 친족이고, 그는 내 손님이 아니던가. 내가 칼을 쓸 궁리를 할 것이 아니라, 그를 살인으로부터 보호해야 하는 것이 내가 할 바이다!"

"그럼, 일개 남자가 아니라 왕이 되시어요." 맥베스 부인이 말했다. 맥베스 부인은 만찬 동안 어떻게 덩컨의 종복 두 명이 포도주를 과음하도록 만들었는지 설명했다. 이들은 덩컨왕을 무방비로 내버려두고 분명히 깊이 잠들 터였다. 덩컨왕을 죽이고 그들에게 살인 누명을 씌우기 위해 그 종복들에게 피를 묻히는 일은 쉬울 것이다.
"부인!" 맥베스가 감탄을 하며 말했다. "맹세컨대 당신 속에는 부드러움이라고는 없구려. 결심했소. 이 끔찍한 일을 도모합시다."
When all the candles were out and the castle was dark, Macbeth crept quietly toward the room where Duncan slept. He turned a corner and stopped. Something seemed to float in the hallway ahead of him.
"Is this a dagger which I see before me?" he said. But when he reached out to grab it, his hand passed right through it. Slowly, the faintly glowing dagger led him forward. "It is nothing but a dagger of the mind," he told himself. "But look! It has the exact form of the dagger I’ve pulled from my belt. And now blood is dripping from its ghostly blade." He shook his head. "It is nothing─just a figment of my imagination."
He looked down. The dagger had led him past Duncan’s sleeping servants, and there before him was the king, lying peacefully in bed. A bell began to sound in the distance. "Hear it not, Duncan," Macbeth whispered, "for this bell summons you either to heaven or to hell." And before the bell could wake the sleeping king, Macbeth plunged his dagger down.
성이 어둠에 잠기고 모든 촛불들이 꺼지자 맥베스는 덩컨왕이 잠든 방으로 조용히 다가갔다. 맥베스는 모퉁이를 돌아서는 멈추어 섰다. 그의 앞 복도에 뭔가가 떠다니는 것 같았다.
"내 눈앞에 보이는 것이 단검인가?" 그가 물었다. 하지만 손을 내밀어 잡으려 하자 손이 단검을 바로 통과해 버렸다. 희미하게 반짝이는 단검이 서서히 그를 앞쪽으로 인도했다. "이건 마음이 만들어낸 단검일 뿐이야." 맥베스는 혼잣말을 했다. "하지만, 저걸 봐! 내 허리띠에서 뽑아 든 단검과 똑같은 모양을 하고 있는 걸. 저 허구의 날에서 이제 피가 뚝뚝 떨어지는구나." 맥베스는 고개를 저었다. "이건 아무 것도 아니야. 나의 상상력이 만들어낸 가짜일 뿐이야."
맥베스는 아래를 내려다 보았다. 단검은 잠든 덩컨왕의 종복들을 지나가도록 맥베스를 이끌었다. 그리고 이제 맥베스 앞에 왕이 평화롭게 침대에 누워 있었다. 멀리서 종이 울리기 시작했다. "듣지 말아라, 덩컨." 맥베스가 속삭였다. "이것은 너를 천국이나 지옥으로 부르는 종소리이기 때문이다." 그리고 종소리에 왕이 깨기 전에 맥베스는 단검을 내리꽂았다.
