As Macbeth left the chamber where the murdered king lay, he met Lady Macbeth in the hallway. She had been too anxious to sleep. "I have done the deed," he said. Then looking at her, he whispered, "Didn’t you hear a noise? One of Duncan’s servants . . . I thought he was awake. He mumbled, ‘God bless us,’ as if he were praying in his sleep. I should have said, ‘Amen,’ but the word stuck in my throat. I was so much in need of a blessing! Why couldn’t I say ‘Amen’?" Then, looking at his bloody dagger, he whispered, "This is a sorry sight."
"What are you doing with that?" Lady Macbeth gasped. "Go back! Leave the dagger by the servants, and cover them with blood."
Macbeth shook his head. "I’ll go no more. I don’t dare look at what I’ve done."
Without hesitating, Lady Macbeth took the dagger and hurried back to the king’s room. When she returned, her hands were covered in blood. "Now my hands are the same color as yours," she said.

In the pale light of dawn, there was a loud knocking on the great gate of the castle. Macduff, who was the thane of Fife and one of Duncan’s most trusted noblemen, had arrived to accompany the king on his journey that day. The gatekeeper, who had drunk too much wine the night before, rose from his post and rubbed his aching head. "The gatekeeper of hell couldn’t be more miserable than me. In the name of the devil," he called, "who’s there?"
Macbeth, who had heard the knocking on the gate, arrived to welcome Macduff. As they walked to the king’s chamber, Macbeth kept silent, but Macduff talked eagerly.
"I can’t remember such an evil night," he said. "At our camp, a cold wind kept blowing the fire out. After we fell asleep, our horses broke loose and ran wild with fear.
"서둘러요. 가서 우리 손에서 이 추악한 증거일랑 씻어 버립시다."
새벽 빛이 희미한 가운데, 거대한 성문을 두드리는 소리가 크게 들려왔다. 파이프의 영주이자 덩컨이 가장 신임하는 귀족 중 하나인 맥더프가 그날 행차에 왕을 동행하기 위해 도착했던 것이다. 전날 밤 포도주를 너무 마셨던 성문지기는 자리에서 일어나 쑤셔오는 머리를 문질렀다. "지옥문의 문지기도 나보다 더 비참하지는 못할 걸." 그러더니 소리쳤다. "악마의 이름으로 묻겠는데, 거기 누구요?"
성문을 두드리는 소리를 들은 맥베스는 맥더프를 맞기 위해 나왔다. 왕의 침소로 걸어가면서 맥베스는 침묵을 지켰다. 그러나 맥더프는 진지하게 이야기를 했다.
"그렇게 불길한 밤은 기억에 없네. 우리 야영지에서는 찬 바람이 계속 불어와 불이 꺼졌지. 우리가 잠든 후에는 말들이 도망쳐 두려움에 날뛰었지.
I don’t know what upset them, but the birds, too, it seemed, were flying madly and screeching all night."
"Yes, it was a rough night," Macbeth said solemnly. They arrived at the king’s chamber, and Macbeth let Macduff go in ahead of him.
"O horror! Horror!" Macduff cried when he saw Duncan. "My tongue cannot speak the horror!" He left the room to wake the other noblemen, calling out, "Murder and treason!" So Macbeth stood alone, staring at the sleeping servants that his wife had smeared with blood.
Outside the room, Banquo and Ross came running. Lady Macbeth came hurrying too, and Duncan’s two sons were the last to arrive.
"What is the matter?" asked Malcolm, the king’s older son.
"Your royal father has been murdered," said Macduff.
"By who?" cried Donaldbain.
무엇 때문에 말들이 놀랐는지 모르겠어. 새들도 밤새 미친 듯이 날면서 울어대더군."

"무슨 일이오?" 왕의 장남인 맬컴이 물었다.
"전하께서 살해당하셨습니다." 맥더프가 말했다. "
누구 짓이오?" 도널베인이 소리쳤다.
"By the servants in his chamber," said Macduff. "Or so it seems. A bloody dagger lies between them and their hands and faces are covered in blood." While Macduff was describing the scene, Macbeth came out of the gruesome chamber.
"Forgive my fury," he said, looking them all in the eye, "but anyone who loved the king and has a heart of courage would have done the same as I . . . I’ve killed the guilty servants!"
News of the king’s death spread quickly, and many anxious discussions were held throughout the castle. Not everyone believed that the two servants were to blame, while some thought that they had been paid to do it. Malcolm and Donaldbain feared that whoever killed their father would try to kill them next. They met secretly that night and decided to flee: Malcolm to England and Donaldbain to Ireland. When people learned that Duncan’s sons had fled, many began to suspect them.

After the funeral, with no one from Duncan’s family left to take the throne, Macbeth was crowned king.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth moved to the king’s palace at Forres, where they decided to hold a banquet for all their noblemen. At Macbeth’s request, Banquo and his young son arrived early to meet with the new royal couple. Macbeth and Banquo talked casually, and Macbeth suggested to Banquo that he go for a ride with his son before dinner. As Banquo walked to the stables with his son, he felt anxious. "I worry that Macbeth got the crown through foul play," he thought, "and yet the witches foretold it all." He looked at his son. "Perhaps I will be the father of kings."
Walking quickly through the palace, Macbeth was also thinking of the witches’ prophecy about Banquo.
장례식 후 왕위를 이어받을 덩컨의 가족이 아무도 없자 맥베스가 왕이 되었다.

He clenched his fists. "Why should I have to wear a fruitless crown? I can’t sleep at night; I keep hearing voices. ‘Macbeth shall sleep no more!’ they say. ‘Macbeth has murdered sleep!’ Did I commit murder and corrupt my mind just so that Banquo’s descendants could be kings? To be king is nothing, unless I am safely king!" He arrived at a small hidden door near the stables. Waiting for him there were two rough men. He whispered instructions to them, telling them where Banquo and his son would be riding. "Report back to me when they’re dead," he said.
The banquet hall was full that evening, and the tables were crowded when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth entered. As the guests rose from their seats to bow, she whispered to her husband, "Be bright and happy among our guests tonight. You spend too much time alone worrying. All your worries should have died with Duncan."
맥베스는 주먹을 움켜쥐었다. "내가 왜 열매없는 왕관을 쓰고 있어야 한단 말인가? 난 밤에 잠을 잘 수가 없는데. 계속 목소리가 들려. '맥베스는 더 이상 잠을 자지 못하리라!'라고 말하더군. "You don’t understand," he said quietly as they walked to the head table. "My mind crawls with scorpions knowing that Banquo and his son are still alive. But I have arranged a dreadful deed." She looked at him questioningly, but all he said was, "You will applaud when it’s done."
During the banquet, Macbeth went from table to table, conversing with his guests. Many commented on Banquo’s absence, and Macbeth replied that he missed his friend and hoped he would arrive soon. Suddenly, he noticed two men skulking at the doorway to the hall. He knew it was the assassins, returned from their task, and he went quickly to meet them. "There’s blood on your face," he said.
"It’s Banquo’s, then," answered the first murderer. "He’s dead."
"Good. And his son?" asked Macbeth. But Banquo’s son had escaped, and when Macbeth heard this, he went into a rage and sent the murderers away.

Lady Macbeth came out to get him. "My lord," she said, "your guests notice your absence." They returned to take their seats, but as they approached their chairs, Macbeth’s face went white and he began to tremble. "What is it?" she asked. "Please, sit."
Staring at his chair as if something unimaginably horrible were seated there, Macbeth yelled, "Don’t look at me with your wounded and gory face!"
The hall went silent. All the guests stopped and stared.
"See there! Behold," Macbeth cried. "Can’t you see! Look! He should be dead, but there he sits!"
Hastily, Lady Macbeth turned to the guests. "Please, excuse my lord," she said. "He is not well. This is just a momentary fit and will soon pass." She grabbed her husband’s arm. "Are you mad? You stare at nothing but a chair."
"As sure as I am standing here, I saw him," Macbeth said. "With his dead eyes, and bleeding from his gaping wounds, it was Banquo’s ghost!"
맥베스 부인이 맥베스를 데리러 나와 말했다. "전하, 손님들이 전하께서 안 계신 것을 알아챌 것입니다." 그들은 자신들의 자리로 돌아왔다. 하지만 의자로 가면서 맥베스의 얼굴이 하얗게 질렸고, 그는 벌벌 떨기 시작했다. "왜 그러십니까?" 부인이 물었다. "앉으십시오."

"내가 여기 서 있는 것만큼이나 확실하게 그자가 보인단 말이오." 맥베스가 말했다. "죽은 이의 눈을 하고, 벌어진 상처에서 피를 흘리던 그건 뱅쿼의 유령이었소!"
