Look, up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It's a red-tailed hawk! They call him Pale Male because he has a large patch of white feathers on his chest, and he is male. He came out of nowhere to try to make it in the big city. He is brave and fearless.
There are many birds that live in New York City's Central Park.

In 1990, 215 different species lived there━but no hawks. Then, in the fall of 1991, Pale Male appeared. He was the first hawk to make his home in Central Park, the most visited city park in the United States. Hawks usually live in the open countryside, so people were very excited to see him.

They enjoyed watching him hunt for rats, pigeons, and squirrels from high atop his perch.
Red-tailed hawks like to watch for prey━the creatures that other animals kill and eat━from the tops of tall trees. But since Pale Male lived in the city, his favorite perches were the tops of apartment buildings!
이들은 페일 메일이 높이 앉아 있다가 쥐와 비둘기, 다람쥐를 사냥하는 것을 지켜보는 것을 즐겼다.

Fifth Avenue, which lines Central Park, is where many rich and famous people live. Pale Male sat on their balconies. When he saw a rat or pigeon on the ground, he would swoop down to catch it. People were amazed that a hawk could survive this way in the city.
센트럴 파크와 나란히 뻗어있는 5번가는 부유하고 유명한 사람들이 많이 사는 곳이다. 페일 메일은 이들의 발코니에 앉아 있다가, 땅에 쥐나 비둘기가 보이면 잡으러 아래로 휙 내려왔다. 사람들은 매가 도시에서 이런 식으로 살아갈 수 있다는 데에 놀랐다.
People were even more amazed when, the next spring, Pale Male brought a mate to New York. Together they built a nest in a tall tree in the park. But crows, a natural enemy of red-tailed hawks, drove the pair away. What would they do?
사람들은 다음 해 봄에 페일 메일이 뉴욕으로 짝을 데리고 왔을 때 더욱 놀랐다. 페일 메일과 그 짝은 공원에 있는 높은 나무에 함께 둥지를 지었다. 하지만 붉은꼬리매의 천적인 까마귀들이 이들을 내쫓았다. 이들은 어떻게 했을까?
Pale Male had an idea. He and his mate broke twigs from a tree and flew to the top of a 12-story apartment building. They built their nest on a ledge above someone's apartment window! They chose a good spot. The spikes on the ledge helped keep the nest firmly in place. And the ledge gave them a great view of the park.
페일 메일에게는 생각이 있었다. 짝과 함께 페일 메일은 나무에서 잔가지들을 부러뜨려서 12층 아파트 건물 꼭대기로 날아갔다. 이들은 누군가의 아파트 창문 위 선반에 둥지를 지었다! 이들은 좋은 곳을 택했다. 선반에 있는 뾰족한 못들은 둥지를 튼튼하게 받쳐주었던 것이다. 그리고 이 선반에서는 공원도 아주 잘 보였다.
Soon the family grew. When three chicks were seen in the nest, people watching below cheered. They had been waiting a long time to see the chicks. Pale Male and his mate fed the baby chicks every day. When the babies were ready, they learned to fly from their parents. Pale Male and his mate were good parents.
곧 가족이 늘어났다. 세 마리의 새끼가 둥지에 있는 것이 보였고, 밑에서 지켜보던 사람들은 환호했다. 사람들은 새끼들을 보려고 오래 기다렸던 것이다. 페일 메일과 짝은 아기 매들에게 매일 먹이를 물어다 주었다. 아기 새들은 준비가 되자 부모로부터 나는 법을 배웠다. 페일 메일과 짝은 좋은 부모였다.
Pale Male was becoming more and more famous. A devoted group of bird-watchers followed his every move. New Yorkers grew to love him as they read about his adventures in the newspapers and saw pictures of him and his family on the Internet. He became a part of everyday life in the city.
페일 메일은 더욱 더 유명해졌다. 헌신적인 새 관찰가들이 페일 메일의 일거수 일투족을 지켜보았다. 뉴욕 사람들은 신문에서 페일 메일의 모험에 대한 기사들을 읽고 인터넷으로 이 새와 가족들의 사진을 보면서 점차 페일 메일을 사랑하게 되었다. 페일 메일은 뉴욕 일상의 일부가 되었던 것이다.
But not everyone loved the hawks. Red-tailed hawks are large birds, and they keep adding twigs to their nests. The apartment people didn't like the mess they made. Pale Male's nest was now eight feet wide and weighed four hundred pounds!
그러나 모두가 매를 사랑한 것은 아니었다. 붉은꼬리매들은 큰 새들인데다 잔가지들을 계속 둥지에 더한다. 아파트에 사는 사람들은 매들이 지저분하게 하는 것을 좋아하지 않았다. 페일 메일의 둥지는 이제 8피트 넓이에 무게가 4백 파운드나 나갔다!
People complained that bits of the nest and pigeon parts kept falling to the ground. They wanted to get rid of the nest.
One cold and rainy day in December 2004, the apartment people got permission to take down the nest. Pale Male's home was gone.
사람들은 둥지에서 잔가지들이 떨어지고 비둘기 시체의 일부가 땅에 떨어진다고 불만을 제기했다. 이들은 둥지를 없애고 싶어했다.

The next day everyone knew what had happened. It was in the newspapers and on TV all over the world. Soon people gathered at the building to protest. They carried signs: HONK 4 HAWKS! NYC KIDS FOR PALE MALE! BRING BACK THE NEST! Cars, buses, cabdrivers, even police in their cruisers honked in support as they drove by.
다음 날 모두가 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알게 되었다. 전 세계 신문과 텔레비전에 그 소식이 실렸던 것이다. 곧 사람들이 건물에 모여 항의를 해댔다. 이들은 피켓을 들고 있었다. "매를 위해 자동차 경적을 울립시다! 뉴욕 시 어린이들은 페일 메일을 지지한다! 둥지를 되돌려 놓으라!" 자동차, 버스, 택시 운전사, 심지어는 순찰차를 탄 경찰들도 차를 몰고 지나가며 지지의 뜻으로 경적을 울렸다.
People who loved Pale Male wrote letters to the apartment people. It took about three weeks, but finally the two groups met. The hawk lovers won. Pale Male could now build a new nest. Experts were called in to design a better support structure for it, one that would make everyone happy.
페일 메일을 사랑한 사람들은 아파트 주민들에게 편지를 썼다. 약 3주가 걸렸고, 마침내 양측이 만났다. 매를 사랑하는 사람들이 이겼다. 페일 메일은 이제 새로 둥지를 지을 수 있었다. 모든 사람들을 만족시킬 수 있는, 둥지를 더 잘 지지해주는 구조를 설계하기 위해 전문가들이 초빙되었다.
And the happiest of all was━Pale Male, of course! As of 2014 he is still living on the ledge in New York City. He has raised many chicks with all of his mates. There are even books and movies about Pale Male.
Now that's a pretty amazing story!
