Narrator: Once upon a time, there lived a very sweet girl. She always wore a red cape with a hood. So everyone called her Little Red Riding Hood.
R. Hood: What a beautiful day it is! Hello, birdie! Good morning, Mr. Squirrel!
내레이터: 옛날 옛적에 아주 마음씨 고운 소녀가 살고 있었어요. 소녀는 늘 모자가 달린 빨간 망토를 입고 다녔지요. 그래서 모두들 소녀를 빨간망토라고 불렀어요.
빨간망토: 정말 날씨가 좋구나! 안녕, 새야! 안녕, 다람쥐 아저씨!

빨간망토: 가엾으신 할머니. 엄마, 제가 갖다 드릴게요.
Narrator: One day, Little Red Riding Hood’s mother had some bad news.
Mother: Your grandma is sick. I made her some food, but I can’t take it to her.
R. Hood: Poor Grandma. I’ll take it, Mother.
엄마: 참 착하기도 하지! 여기 음식이 있다. 숲속을 지날 때 조심하거라.
빨간망토: 그럴게요. 엄마, 다녀오겠습니다.
내레이터: 할머니는 숲 건너편에 살고 계셨어요. 그래서 빨간망토는 바구니를 들고 할머니 집으로 출발했어요.
Mother: What a good girl you are! Here’s the food. Be careful going through the forest.
R. Hood: I will. Good-bye, Mother.
Narrator: Grandma lived on the other side of the forest. So Little Red Riding Hood took the basket and left for Grandma’s.
내레이터: 숲속에는 덩치가 크고 나쁜, 아주 배고픈 늑대가 살았어요.
늑대: 이 숲속에는 먹을 게 아무것도 없어. 다람쥐는 이제 지겨워. 토끼는 썩은 맛이 난다니까. 뭔가 새롭고 맛있는 게 없을까.
내레이터: 바로 그때 빨간망토가 지나갔어요. 빨간망토는 늑대를 보고 멈췄어요.
Narrator: In the forest lived a big, bad, and very hungry wolf.
Wolf: There’s nothing to eat in this forest. I’m sick of squirrels. The rabbits taste rotten. I want something new and yummy.
Narrator: Just then, Little Red Riding Hood walked by. She stopped when she saw the wolf.
빨간망토: 어, 늑대아저씨, 안녕하세요.
늑대: 정말 맛있어 보이는 걸. 안녕, 얘야. 어딜 가는 길이니?
빨간망토: 할머니 댁에요. 많이 아프시거든요.
내레이터: 낯선 사람, 특히 배고픈 낯선 사람과 얘길 하는 건 위험해요.
하지만 빨간망토는 그걸 몰랐어요.
R. Hood: Oh, hello, Mr. Wolf.
Wolf: Now she looks very tasty. Good day, little girl. Where are you going?
R. Hood: To my grandma’s house. She’s very sick.
Narrator: Talking to strangers, especially hungry ones, is dangerous. But Little Red Riding Hood did not know that.
늑대: 정말 안됐구나. 할머니는 어디 사시니? 나도 할머니께 문안가고 싶구나.
빨간망토: 숲 건너편에 사세요. 정말 찾기 쉬워요.
늑대: 그렇다면 어서 가거라. 할머니를 기다리시게 하면 안 된단다.
Wolf: That’s too bad. Where does your grandma live? Maybe I can visit her too.
R. Hood: She lives on the other side of the forest. It’s very easy to find.
Wolf: Hurry along then. You mustn’t keep Grandma waiting.
내레이터: 그렇게 빨간망토는 계속해서 길을 갔어요. 늑대는 빨간망토가 가는 걸 지켜봤어요. 늑대에게는 계획이 있었지요.
늑대: 할머니 집으로 뛰어가서 기다려야지. 그런 다음 빨간망토가 오면…….
내레이터: 늑대는 숲속을 뛰어가 할머니 집으로 갔어요.
Narrator: So Little Red Riding Hood continued on her way. The wolf watched her go. He had a plan.
Wolf: I’ll run to her grandma’s house and wait. Then when she comes . . .
Narrator: The wolf ran through the forest to Grandma’s house.
늑대: 안녕하세요? 누구 안 계세요?
내레이터: 아무런 대답이 없었어요. 집이 빈 것 같았어요.
늑대: 할머니는 어디 있는 거지?
내레이터: 바로 그때 늑대는 빨간망토가 집으로 들어오는 소리를 들었어요. 그래서 늑대는 할머니의 숄을 걸쳤어요. 그리고는 침대로 뛰어들었어요.
Wolf: Hello? Anybody home?
Narrator: There was no answer. The house looked empty.
Wolf: Where could Grandma be?
Narrator: Just then, the wolf heard Little Red Riding Hood coming up to the house. So the wolf put on Grandma’s shawl. Then he jumped into the bed.
빨간망토: 똑, 똑
늑대: 누구냐?
빨간망토: 할머니, 빨간망토예요. 할머니께 드리려고 음식을 가져왔어요.
늑대: 정말 착하구나. 어서 들어오렴.
R. Hood: Knock, knock.
Wolf: Who’s there?
R. Hood: It’s Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma. I brought some food for you.
Wolf: Oh, how lovely. Come inside, dear.
빨간망토: 할머니, 목소리가 왜 그래요?
늑대: 이 지독한 감기 때문이란다.
빨간망토: 할머니, 팔이 정말 커요.
늑대: 얘야, 너를 잘 안아주기 위해서란다.
R. Hood: Grandma, what’s wrong with your voice?
Wolf: It’s this terrible cold.
R. Hood: Grandma, what big arms you have.
Wolf: All the better to hug you with, my dear.
빨간망토: 할머니, 귀가 정말 커요.
늑대: 얘야, 네 목소리를 잘 듣기 위해서란다.
빨간망토: 할머니, 눈이 정말 커요.
늑대: 얘야, 너를 잘 보기 위해서란다.
R. Hood: Grandma, what big ears you have.
Wolf: All the better to hear you with, my dear.

R. Hood: Help! Help!
늑대: 널 도와줄 사람은 아무도 없어. 넌 이제 내 거야!
내레이터: 늑대는 그 큰 팔로 빨간망토를 잡았어요. 늑대는 입을 벌렸어요. 늑대가 그 날카로운 이빨로 빨간망토를 막 물려고 하는 순간…….
할머니: 무슨 일이지?
늑대: 손녀를 먹어버리겠다. 냠냠!
Wolf: There’s no one to help you. You’re mine now!
Narrator: The wolf caught her with his big arms. He opened his mouth. He was about to bite her with his big sharp teeth when . . .
Grandma: What’s going on?
Wolf: I’m going to eat up your granddaughter. Yum!
할머니: 지금 막 수프를 만들려던 참이었어. 채소를 좀 넣어야겠는 걸. 그런 다음 그 아이도 넣으렴.
빨간망토: 할머니!
내레이터: 걱정 말아요. 할머니가 정말로 빨간망토를 늑대가 먹게 내버려두려던 것은 아니었어요. 할머니에게도 계획이 있었지요.
Grandma: Well, I was just about to make some soup. Let me put some vegetables in. Then you can put her in too.
R. Hood: Grandma!
Narrator: Don’t worry. Grandma wasn’t really going to let the wolf eat Little Red Riding Hood. Grandma had a plan too.
늑대: 빨리 해! 난 몹시 배가 고프단 말이야.
할머니: 잠깐만 기다려라! 거의 다 됐단다.
내레이터: 할머니가 냄비에 넣은 채소는 고추였어요. 할머니는 커다란 나무 주걱으로 수프를 저었어요.
할머니: 음! 늑대 씨 맛을 한번 보시지요.
Wolf: Hurry up! I’m starving!
Grandma: Hold your horses! I’m almost done.
Narrator: The vegetables Grandma put in the pot were hot chili peppers. She stirred the soup with a big wooden spoon.
Grandma: Mmm! Taste this, Mr. Wolf.
늑대: 악! 입이 얼얼해!
할머니: 이런! 여기, 이걸 먹어봐. 훨씬 나을 거야.
늑대: 악! 입에서 불이 난다! 악!

내레이터: 입, 혀, 목에 불이 붙은 듯한 늑대는 할머니의 집에서 재빨리 뛰쳐나갔어요. 할머니와 빨간망토는 다시는 늑대를 보지 못했지요.
할머니: 그래, 빨간망토야. 뭐 배운 게 있니?
빨간망토: 네, 할머니. 낯선 사람과는 다시는 말을 하지 않겠어요. 그리고 할머니의 수프는 절대로 먹지 않겠어요!
