Polonius was reading in his study when Ophelia entered.
"Oh Father," she cried. "I’m worried about Hamlet! He came to see me just now, his clothing in disarray, with a pitiful look on his face. He wouldn’t speak; he just stared at me. He kept nodding his head, and he sighed so loudly his whole body shook. And then, still staring at me, he left!"
"Oh dear," said Polonius. "Have you spoken to him harshly of late?"
"No, but I did as you ordered." Ophelia hung her head in sorrow. "I told him I couldn’t see him anymore."
"Your rejection has made him mad, I fear. I must tell the king; he too has wondered about Hamlet’s odd behavior lately."
Hamlet’s mother and his uncle Claudius were in the great hall with Hamlet’s childhood friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
오필리아가 들어왔을 때 폴로니우스는 서재에서 책을 읽고 있었다.
"아, 아버지." 오필리아가 외쳤다. "햄릿 왕자님이 걱정됩니다. 지금 막 나를 보러 오셨는데, 옷은 엉망이고 얼굴에 가엾은 표정을 짓고 계셨어요. 그리고 말을 하려 하지 않고 나를 그냥 쳐다 보기만 하다가 계속 고개를 끄덕이며 온 몸이 떨릴 정도로 크게 한숨을 내쉬었고요. 그리고 나서는 나를 여전히 쳐다 보면서 자리를 뜨셨어요!"
"아, 저런." 폴로니우스가 말했다. "최근에 왕자님께 매정한 말을 한 게냐?"
"아니요, 하지만 아버님께서 명하신 대로 했어요." 오필리아가 슬픔으로 고개를 떨구었다. "더 이상 왕자님을 뵐 수 없다고 말씀드렸어요."
"네가 거절을 해서 왕자님이 실성한 게야. 폐하께 말씀드려야겠다. 폐하께서도 최근에 왕자님의 기이한 행동 때문에 걱정하고 계신단다."
햄릿의 어머니와 숙부 클라디우스는 햄릿의 어린 시절 친구 로젠크레츠와 길덴스턴과 함께 대연회장에 있었다.
"I summoned you two to court," said the king, "because I believe something other than his father’s death is troubling Hamlet. Spend time with him and report anything you find out to me."
"You will be rewarded generously," Gertrude added. She was very worried about her son.
"We shall obey your majesties," said Rosencrantz, bowing low.
"At your service, your majesties," said Guildenstern, bowing even lower.
Just then Polonius entered the hall. "Good news, my lord! The ambassadors have returned from Norway. Fortinbras has agreed not to invade our country. Denmark is safe."
"Excellent," said Claudius.
"I have more news," Polonius continued. "I know what is making Hamlet crazy.
"내가 자네들 둘을 궁정으로 불렀다." 왕이 말했다. "아버지의 죽음 외에 다른 무엇인가 때문에 햄릿이 힘들어 하는 것 같아서이다. 햄릿과 시간을 보내면서 뭐든지 알게 되면 내게 보고하라."
"후하게 보상을 받을 것이다." 거트루드가 덧붙였다. 그녀는 아들에 대해 많이 걱정하고 있었다.
"폐하께서 명하신 대로 하겠습니다." 로젠크레츠가 절을 하며 말했다.
"분부대로 하겠습니다, 폐하." 길덴스턴은 더 크게 절을 하며 말했다.
바로 그때 폴로니우스가 대연회장으로 들어왔다. "좋은 소식입니다, 전하. 노르웨이에서 대사들이 돌아왔습니다. 포틴브라스는 이 나라를 침공하지 않기로 동의했답니다. 덴마크는 안전합니다."
"잘 됐구나." 클라우디우스가 말했다.
"다른 소식도 있습니다." 폴로니우스가 말을 이었다. "왜 햄릿 왕자님이 실성을 했는지 제가 알고 있습니다.
He has been courting my daughter, Ophelia, and I told her she should discourage him. After all he is a prince, but she is not a princess. When she told him she could not see him anymore, it broke his heart and drove him mad."
"I’m not so sure that’s the reason," said the king, frowning. "Can you give me any proof?"
"Certainly, my lord. I’ll arrange for us to secretly observe them together, so you can judge for yourself. We can hide behind the tapestries here in the great hall, where they often meet. I’ll tell Ophelia to wait for Hamlet here this afternoon."
"Arrange it," said Claudius.
In another hall in the castle, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern found Hamlet.
"Why are you here?" asked the prince.
"To visit you!" replied Rosencrantz cheerily.
왕자님께서는 제 여식 오필리아에게 구애를 해오고 있습니다. 제가 여식에게 왕자님을 거절하라고 했습니다. 어쨌든 그분은 왕자님이시지만 제 여식은 공주가 아닙니다. 오필리아가 더 만날 수 없다고 왕자님께 말씀드렸을 때 거기 상심하셔서 실성을 하신 모양입니다."
"그게 이유인 것 같지 않소이다." 왕이 얼굴을 찌푸리며 말했다. "증거를 댈 수 있겠소?"
"물론입니다, 폐하. 우리가 몰래 왕자님과 딸 아이를 지켜보도록 조처를 하겠습니다. 그러면 직접 판단하실 수 있을 겁니다. 그 둘이 종종 만나는 여기 대연회장에 있는 벽걸이 장식 뒤에 숨어 있으면 됩니다. 오필리아에게 오늘 오후 여기서 햄릿 왕자님을 기다리라고 말하겠습니다."
"그리하라." 클라우디우스가 말했다.
성의 다른 쪽에 있는 큰 방에서 로젠크렌츠와 길덴스턴은 햄릿을 찾았다.
"자네들이 왜 여기 있는가?" 왕자가 물었다.
"왕자님을 뵈러 왔습니다!" 로젠크렌츠가 쾌활하게 대답했다.
"Didn’t the king send for you?" asked Hamlet suspiciously.
Guildenstern glanced nervously at Rosencrantz.
"The king said you needed cheering up," Rosencrantz said smoothly.
"And we have just the thing to lift your spirits," said Guildenstern. "On our journey we met a traveling theater company. They’ll perform a play here tonight."
Trumpets sounded, and the actors entered the hall.
"I know these actors," Hamlet exclaimed, his face lighting up. "Welcome!" Then he had an idea. He drew one of the actors aside and asked, "Can you perform The Murder of Gonzago?"
"Certainly, my lord," replied the actor.
"Good," said Hamlet. "And I’d like you to add a few lines that I will write." He turned to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. "Now, friends, show the actors to their rooms."
"왕이 자네들을 오라고 부른 게 아니고?" 햄릿이 의심쩍게 물었다.
길덴스턴이 초조하게 로젠크렌츠를 쳐다 보았다.
"폐하께서 왕자님을 즐겁게 해드릴 필요가 있다고 하셨습니다." 로젠크렌츠가 붙임성있게 말했다.
"그리고 저희에겐 왕자님의 기분을 좋게 해드릴 거리가 있습니다." 길덴스턴이 말했다. "여행 중에 저희는 유랑 극단을 만났습니다. 오늘 밤 여기서 공연을 할 것입니다."
나팔 소리가 나고 배우들이 안으로 들어왔다.
"이 배우들은 내가 아는 이들이다." 햄릿이 외쳤다. 그의 얼굴이 밝아졌다. "잘들 왔다!" 그때 햄릿에게 한 가지 생각이 떠올랐다. 그는 배우 중 한 명을 옆으로 끌어당겨서는 물었다. "<곤자고의 살인>을 공연해 줄 수 있는가?"
"물론입죠, 왕자님."
"좋아." 햄릿이 말했다. "그리고 내가 써 주는 대사 몇 줄을 덧붙여 주었으면 좋겠네." 그리고 햄릿은 로젠크렌츠와 길덴스턴에게로 돌아섰다. "자, 친구들. 배우들을 방으로 안내해주게."
When everyone had left, Hamlet considered his plan. "The play I chose should provide proof that my uncle killed my father. It is about the murder of a king. If Claudius is guilty, he will react when he sees it. If he flinches even once, I’ll know! Yes, the play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king!" He started to walk to his chambers.
But as he walked, Hamlet began to doubt himself. "Why has it taken me so long to avenge my father’s death? Am I a coward?" he thought.
He became so distressed about his situation that he began to contemplate suicide. "To be or not to be: that is the question. Is it nobler to deal with the blows that fate sends you, or to simply put a stop to them by ending your own life? Oh, to die, to sleep . . . but that’s what we’re afraid of—that sleep of death from which no traveler returns. That’s what makes us fight for life."
모두가 자리를 뜨자 햄릿은 자신의 계획을 고려해보았다. "내가 고른 연극이 숙부가 아버지를 죽였다는 증거를 보여주어야 한다. 그 연극은 왕을 살인하는 내용이니까. 죄가 있으면 클라디우스는 이 연극을 봤을 때 반응을 보일 거야. 한번이라도 움칠한다면 내가 알 수 있어! 그래, 이 연극으로 왕의 양심을 엿볼 수 있을거야!" 햄릿은 자기 방으로 걸어가기 시작했다.
하지만 걷다가 햄릿은 의심이 들었다. "아버지의 죽음에 대해 복수를 하는 게 왜 내게는 이리도 오래 걸렸을까? 난 겁쟁이인가?" 그는 생각했다.
자신의 처지가 너무도 괴로워서 햄릿은 자살을 고려하기 시작했다. "죽느냐 사느냐 이것이 문제로다. 운명이 가하는 주먹질을 받아들이는 게 더 고귀한 것인가 아니면 스스로 삶에 종지부를 찍어 주먹질을 멈추는 게 더 고귀한 것인가? 아, 죽는 것, 잠드는 것. 하지만 인간은 그걸 두려워하지 않는가. 그 죽음의 잠에서 돌아오는 나그네는 없으니. 그래서 우리가 살기 위해 싸우게 되는 것 아니던가."
As Hamlet passed through the great hall, he ran into Ophelia. She looked up from a book as he entered.
"My lord," said Ophelia, "I want to return the gifts you gave me."
"I gave you nothing," said Hamlet.
"You know you did," replied Ophelia, confused.
"I loved you once, but no longer," said Hamlet.
"Then I was deceived," said Ophelia, deeply hurt.
"You should go to a convent," Hamlet told her. "I’m not worth your time. We men are proud and vengeful. And you women make fools of us! We’ll have no more marriage! Get thee to a nunnery!" He turned and left the room.
"Heaven help him!" cried Ophelia. "Such a noble mind gone mad! Oh, woe is me!"
대연회장을 지나가다가 햄릿은 오필리아와 마주쳤다. 햄릿이 들어서자 오필리아는 읽던 책에서 고개를 들었다.
"왕자님." 오필리아가 말했다. "제게 주신 선물을 돌려드리고 싶어서요."
"당신에게 내가 준 게 없지 않소." 햄릿이 말했다.
"주셨다는 걸 아시지 않습니까." 오필리아가 혼란스러워하며 말했다.
"한때 나는 당신을 사랑했지만 더 이상은 아니오." 햄릿이 말했다.
"그렇다면 제가 기만당한 거로군요." 깊이 상처를 받은 오필리아가 말했다.
"당신은 수녀원에나 가시오." 햄릿이 오필리아에게 말했다. "나는 당신이 시간을 내줄 가치가 없는 사람이요. 남자들은 교만하고 복수를 꾀하는 자들이요. 당신네 여자들은 우리를 바보 취급하고 말이오! 우리에게 결혼이란 없소. 가서 수녀나 되시오!" 햄릿은 돌아서서 대연회장을 나갔다.
Claudius and Polonius came out from behind a tapestry. They had been eavesdropping on the conversation. "I don’t believe he’s lovesick," declared the king. "I think something else is troubling him, and when it surfaces, it could be dangerous. I’ll send him to England."
"I still think the problem is love," said Polonius, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Ask the queen to speak to him tonight. Hamlet will be honest with her. I will hide myself so I can hear their conversation. If a broken heart is not his problem, then send him to England immediately."
"It shall be so," replied the king. "Madness in great ones must not unwatched go."
That evening, before the play, Hamlet explained his plan to Horatio. "Watch the king’s reaction carefully," he told his friend.
클라디우스와 폴로니우스가 벽장식 뒤에서 나왔다. 이들은 대화를 엿듣고 있었다. "상사병에 걸렸다는 걸 못 믿겠네." 왕이 단언했다. "다른 무엇인가 때문에 괴로워하고 있어. 그게 드러나면 위험할 수도 있으니 왕자를 영국으로 보내겠네."
"저는 여전히 사랑이 문제라고 생각합니다. 폴로니우스가 생각에 잠긴 듯 수염을 매만지며 말했다. "왕비께 오늘 밤 왕자님과 말을 해보라고 청해보십시오. 왕자님은 왕비님께는 솔직하지 않으십니까? 제가 몸을 숨기고 둘의 대화를 듣겠습니다. 상사병이 왕자님 문제가 아니라면 그때엔 왕자님을 영국으로 즉시 보내십시오."
"그렇게 하겠네." 왕이 대답했다. "뛰어난 자들의 광기는 그냥 넘기면 안 되는 법이니까."
그날 밤 연극이 시작되기 전 햄릿은 자신의 계획을 호레이쇼에게 설명했다. "왕의 반응을 주의 깊게 살피게." 햄릿이 친구에게 말했다.
A stage lit by torches had been set up in the great hall. Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, and the courtiers seated themselves in front of it. Two actors entered, dressed as a king and a queen.
"The play is called The Murder of Gonzago," said Hamlet to the people around him. "Gonzago is the king. It’s based on a true story."
"We have been married thirty years," said the player king, "and our love is still strong. But I grow old and soon will die!"
"I love you so much that I will never marry again!" declared the player queen. Gonzago then said he was sleepy and would rest in the garden, and the player queen left the stage. A third actor appeared.
횃불로 불을 밝힌 무대가 대연회장에 세워졌다. 클라디우스, 거트루드, 폴로니우스 그리고 궁정 귀족들이 그 앞에 자리하고 앉았다. 두 명의 배우가 왕과 왕비 차림으로 들어왔다
"이 연극의 제목은 <곤자고의 살인>입니다." 햄릿이 주변 사람들에게 일렀다. "곤자고는 왕이고 실화에 기초한 이야기입니다."
"우리가 결혼한 지 30년이오." 왕 역할을 하는 배우가 말했다. "우리의 사랑은 강하오. 하지만 나는 늙어서 죽을 날이 멀지 않았소!"
"당신을 너무 사랑해서 나는 절대 재혼하지 않을 거예요!" 여왕 역할을 맡은 배우가 단언했다. 그리고 나서 곤자고는 잠이 와서 정원에서 휴식을 취했고 왕비는 무대를 떠났다. 세 번째 배우가 모습을 드러냈다.
"I am Lucianus, the king’s nephew," said the actor, "but I long to be king!" He held up a small glass vial. "This poison can kill a man instantly!" He crept over to the player king, who lay asleep, and tipped the bottle of poison into the player king’s ear.
At this Claudius rose so swiftly that he knocked over his chair. "Lights, lights!" he thundered.
"Are you ill, my lord?" said Gertrude, alarmed.
"Away!" cried Claudius. He swept out of the hall, followed by Gertrude and the entire court, except for Hamlet and Horatio.
"Did you see that?" said Hamlet excitedly to his friend. "Oh Horatio, I believe the ghost now!"
"나는 왕의 조카인 루치아누스이다." 배우가 말했다. "그런데 나는 왕이 되기를 바라고 있다." 그는 작은 유리병을 치켜 들었다. "이 독약은 사람을 즉시 죽이지." 그는 누워서 잠든 왕 역할의 배우에게 슬그머니 다가가서 독약병을 왕의 귀에 대고 기울였다.
이 장면에서 클라디우스가 벌떡 일어나는 바람에 의자가 쓰러졌다. "불을 켜라, 불을!" 왕이 고함을 쳤다.
"편찮으십니까, 전하." 거트루드가 놀라서 말했다.
"치워라!" 클라디우스는 이렇게 외치고는 대연회장에서 휙 나가버렸다. 그 뒤를 햄릿과 호레이쇼만 빼고 거트루드와 궁정 귀족 전체가 따랐다.
"저걸 봤는가?" 햄릿이 흥분하며 친구에게 말했다. "아, 호레이쇼. 난 이제 유령 말을 믿네!"
