"Go, Luke!" cheered Katie. She was waving the ribbon wand she had just made. Luke was stomping across the room on stilts. He was practicing for the parade.
"Left, right, left, right!" directed Mrs. Penkov.
"Be careful!" called AJ.
"잘 해라, 루크!" 케이티가 응원을 했다. 케이티는 막 만든 응원용 리본을 흔들고 있었다. 루크는 죽마를 타고 실내를 쿵쿵거리며 다녔다. 퍼레이드 연습을 하고 있었던 것이다.
"왼쪽, 오른쪽, 왼쪽, 오른쪽!" 펜코프 선생님이 지시했다.
"조심해!" 에이제이가 외쳤다.
Campers beat on their drums, shook their shakers, and twirled their twirlers. Today was day five of camp. Saturday was Willow Creek’s birthday, and the campers were almost ready for the parade.
But time was running out for the scavenger hunt. In less than two days, they had to turn in their bags—ready or not.
캠프 참가자들은 북을 두드리고, 셰이커를 흔들고, 지휘봉을 돌리고 있었다. 오늘은 캠프 다섯 번째 날이었다. 토요일이 윌로우크릭 기념일이고, 캠프 참가자들은 퍼레이드 준비가 거의 다 되어 있었다.

That afternoon the Earthworms gathered at Fried Pie Heaven.
Katie took a bite of peach fried pie. "Luke’s getting his hair cut," she said. "He’ll be late."
"You’re not supposed to talk with food in your mouth," said AJ.
그날 오후 지렁이팀은 ‘파이튀김 천국’에 모였다.
케이티는 복숭아 파이 튀김 한 입을 베어 물었다. "루크는 머리를 깎고 있어." 케이티가 말했다. "늦을 거야."
"입에 음식을 넣고 얘기를 하면 안 돼." 에이제이가 말했다.
Katie took another bite. "I’ll remember that next time," she said with her mouth full.
Emily was checking the scavenger hunt list one more time. "We’re lucky my dad had that old campaign button," she said. "Now the only thing we’re missing is—"
케이티는 한 입을 또 베어 물었다. "다음 번엔 명심할게." 케이티는 입에 먹을 걸 잔뜩 넣고 말했다.
에밀리는 스캐빈저 헌트 목록을 한번 더 확인하고 있었다. "우리 아빠가 그 오래된 선거 운동 배지를 가지고 계셔서 다행이었어." 에밀리가 말했다. "이제 우리가 유일하게 빠뜨린 건—"
Just then Luke ran into the coffee shop.
"Guess what I learned at the barber shop!" he said. Luke sat down at the table. "No one in Willow Creek is allowed to own a dog that barks too loud or too often!"
바로 그때 루크가 커피숍 안으로 달려들어왔다.
"이발소에서 내가 뭘 알아냈게!" 루크가 말했다. 루크는 테이블에 앉았다. "윌로우크릭에서는 너무 시끄럽게 짖거나 너무 자주 짖는 개는 키우지 못하게 되어 있어!"
"So?" said AJ.
"So it’s a law!" said Luke.
"A Willow Creek law!" said Emily, waving the scavenger list in the air. "Do you know what this means, team?"
"We’re almost finished with the hunt!" said Katie.
"그래서?" 에이제이가 말했다.
"그러니까 그게 법이라고!" 루크가 말했다.
"윌로우크릭 법!" 에밀리가 스케빈저 목록을 공중에 흔들며 말했다. "이게 무슨 뜻인지 아니, 팀 동지들?"
"우리가 스케빈저 헌트를 거의 다 끝냈다는 거지!" 케이티가 말했다.
Down the street at the library, the Tornadoes were checking their list too.
"Where’s the note from Mr. Potter?" asked Laura.
"It’s right here," said Carlos. "Milton Christopher Potter. Ninety-seven years old."
같은 길에 있는 도서관에서 토네이도팀도 목록을 확인하고 있었다.
"포터 할아버지가 써 준 쪽지는 어디 있지?" 로라가 물었다.
"바로 여기 있지." 카를로스가 말했다. "밀턴 크리스토퍼 포터. 97세."
Now everyone turned to Manny.
"Manny," said Joy with her grown-up voice. "We are depending on your outstanding counting skills. Are you ready to report?"
이제 모두가 매니를 돌아보았다.
"매니." 조이가 어른 같은 목소리로 말했다. "우리는 네 뛰어난 셈 능력을 믿어. 보고할 준비는 됐니?"
"Yes, I am," said Manny.
"Okay," said Joy. "How many stop signs did you count on Main Street?"
"Seven," said Manny.
"응, 준비됐어." 매니가 말했다.
"좋아." 조이가 말했다. "메인 스트릿에서 멈춤 표지판을 몇 개나 세었니?"
"일곱 개." 매니가 말했다.
"Mailboxes?"
"Two."
"And last how many streetlamps did you count?"
"Eighteen."
"우편함은?"
"두 개."
"그리고 마지막으로 가로등은 몇 개나 세었니?"
"열 여덟 개."
Laura looked up from the list. "We’re done with the hunt!"
"Hooray!" cheered the Tornadoes.
"Shh!" said Mrs. Donovan. "Use your library voices, please!"
"We’re going to win!" whispered Joy.
목록을 쳐다보던 로라가 고개를 들었다. "우리 스캐빈저 헌트는 끝났어!"
"만세!" 토네이도팀은 환성을 질렀다.
"쉿!" 도노번 부인이 말했다. "도서관에서는 작은 목소리로 말하세요!"
"우리가 이길 거야!" 조이가 속삭였다.
Friday was the last day of camp.
"Teams!" said Mrs. Penkov. "Are you ready to turn in your bags?"
"The Earthworms are ready!" called AJ. He grabbed the team bag and carried it up to Mrs. Penkov.
금요일은 캠프 마지막 날이었다.
"팀원들!" 펜코프 선생님이 말했다. "쇼핑백을 낼 준비는 됐나요?"
"지렁이팀은 준비됐어요!" 에이제이가 말했다. 에이제이는 쇼핑백을 쥐고 펜코프 선생님께 가져갔다.
"It’s the marble lady!" squeaked Manny as AJ passed by. The Earthworms’ jaws dropped.
"What? That was YOU?" sputtered Katie. She shook her fist. The Tornadoes burst out laughing.
"대리석 여자다!" 에이제이가 지나갈 때 매니가 끽끽거리는 소리로 말했다. 지렁이팀의 입이 딱 벌어졌다.
"뭐라고? 그게 너희들이었어?" 케이티가 식식거리며 말했다. 케이티는 주먹을 휘둘러 보였다. 토네이도 팀원들은 와락 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
The other teams carried their bags to Mrs. Penkov. She arranged them in a row on the table: Airplanes, Lizards, Watermelons, Earthworms, Tornadoes.
"When will you announce the winner?" asked Joy.
"After the parade," said Mrs. Penkov.
다른 팀들도 쇼핑백을 펜코프 선생님께 가져갔다. 선생님은 쇼핑백들을 테이블 위에 일렬로 정리해 놓았다. 비행기팀, 도마뱀팀, 수박팀, 지렁이팀, 토네이도팀이었다.
"언제 우승팀을 발표하실 거예요?" 조이가 물었다.
"퍼레이드 후에 할 거야." 펜코프 선생님이 말했다.
"And then you’ll give out the prizes, right?" said Katie.
"Of course," said Mrs. Penkov. "And since you have worked so hard, I think you all deserve a prize."
She pulled a big box from under the table. "Surprise!" she cried. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLOW CREEK T-shirts!"

The day campers clapped and cheered.
"T-shirts for everyone!" Mrs. Penkov laughed and tossed T-shirts right and left. "Yellow for the Airplanes. Blue for the Tornadoes. Green for the Lizards. Red for the Watermelons. And orange for the Earthworms."
주간 캠프 참가자들은 박수를 치며 환성을 질렀다.
"티셔츠는 모두에게 줄 거예요!" 펜코프 선생님이 웃으며 티셔츠를 오른쪽 왼쪽으로 던졌다. "비행기팀은 노란색, 토네이도팀은 파란색, 도마뱀팀은 녹색, 수박팀은 빨간색, 그리고 지렁이팀은 오렌지색."
"Thank you, Mrs. Penkov!" shouted the campers.
"You’re welcome," said Mrs. Penkov. "But—we still have work to do! The marchers can help me finish our banner. The riders can decorate their bikes. And Luke, get up on those stilts and practice! Tomorrow is the big day!"
"고맙습니다, 펜코프 선생님!" 캠프 참가자들이 외쳤다.
"천만에요." 펜코프 선생님이 말했다. "하지만—아직 우린 할 일이 있어요! 행진하는 사람들은 내가 플래카드를 마무리하는 걸 도와주면 좋겠어요. 자전거를 타는 아이들은 자전거를 장식하면 되겠고, 그리고 루크는 죽마를 타고 연습을 해야겠어! 내일이 행사날이니까!"
