It was early in the morning and still dark outside. A garbage truck drove along West Street. Suddenly bolts of electricity lit up the sky.
Za-wap! Za-wap!
새벽이었고 아직 바깥은 컴컴했다. 쓰레기차가 웨스트 가를 따라 지나가고 있었다. 갑자기 전기 불빛이 하늘을 밝혔다.
츠으으왑! 츠으으왑!
A second later the sky was dark again.
"That was strange," said one garbageman.
"Yeah," said the other man. "I wonder what . . . Oh no!"
Roar!
잠시 후에 하늘은 다시 어두워졌다.
"이상한 일이네." 쓰레기를 수거하는 미화원 한 명이 말했다.
"그러게." 다른 미화원이 말했다. "무엇 때문에……. 어, 이럴 수가!"
으르렁!
"I'm so glad it's Friday," said Jack. "No school tomorrow!"
Roxy and her friends were walking to school. Everyone was excited about the weekend.
"오늘이 금요일이라서 기뻐." 잭이 말했다. "내일은 학교 수업이 없잖아!"
록시와 친구들은 학교로 걸어가고 있었다. 모두가 주말을 앞두고 들떠 있었다.
"We should go to the park tomorrow," said Terrell.
"Great idea," said Roxy. "Let's ride our bikes there."
"I'll bring a Frisbee," said Jack. "We can play Frisbee tag."
"내일 공원에 가면 좋을 거 같아." 테렐이 말했다.
"좋은 생각이야." 록시가 말했다. "거기서 우리 자전거를 타자."
"난 프리스비를 가져갈게." 잭이 말했다. "우리는 프리스비 술래잡기를 하면 돼."
Mara sighed. "I wish I could go with you," she said. "But my parents made plans already. They're taking me to the Metro City Natural History Museum."
마라는 한숨을 쉬었다. "나도 너희랑 갈 수 있었으면 좋겠다." 마라가 말했다. "하지만 우리 부모님이 이미 계획을 세워놨어. 나를 메트로 시티 자연사 박물관으로 데리고 갈 거야."
"I love that museum," said Terrell. "It has ancient fossils and cave paintings. And lots of dinosaur bones!"
"Dinosaurs are awesome," said Jack. "My favorite is T. rex."
"난 그 박물관이 정말 좋아." 테렐은 말했다. "오래된 화석이랑 동굴 그림들이 있잖아. 공룡 뼈도 많고!"
"공룡들은 아주 멋져." 잭이 말했다. "내가 가장 좋아하는 건 티라노사우루스야."
Mara's eyes lit up. "Hey! Why don't you all come with me?"
"Really?" said Roxy.
"Sure," said Mara. "My parents won't mind."
마라의 눈빛이 빛났다. "아! 너희 모두 나랑 같이 가지 그래?"
"정말?" 록시가 말했다.
"물론이지." 마라는 말했다. "우리 부모님은 괜찮다고 하실 거야."
Roxy and her friends grinned.
"I can't wait!" said Jack. "Maybe we'll see a T. rex skeleton!"
"I wish we could see real live dinosaurs," said Terrell. "It's too bad they're extinct."
록시와 친구들은 싱긋 웃었다.
"빨리 가고 싶다!" 잭은 말했다. "티라노사우루스 뼈대를 보게 될지도 몰라!"
"우리가 실제 살아있는 공룡들을 볼 수 있다면 좋겠다." 테렐이 말했다. "공룡들이 멸종되어서 무척 아쉬워."
"You can see live dinosaurs, Terrell," said Roxy. "You just need to invent a time machine."
"Ha-ha." Terrell pretended to laugh.
"살아있는 공룡을 볼 수 있어, 테렐." 록시가 말했다. "타임머신을 발명하기만 하면 돼."
"하하." 테렐은 웃는 척했다.
But then he looked excited. "Hey! Maybe Rocket Girl could help us build a time machine!"
Roxy laughed and shook her head. "Terrell, that's ridiculous. I doubt Rocket Girl knows how to build a time machine."
하지만 그러다가 테렐은 들뜬 표정을 지었다. "어! 어쩌면 로켓걸이 타임머신을 만들도록 도와줄 수도 있겠다!"
록시는 웃었고 고개를 저었다. "테렐, 그건 말도 안 돼. 로켓걸은 타임머신을 만드는 방법을 모를 거야."
Terrell sighed. "You're probably right."
Just then Roxy's watch beeped.
"Oh!" she said, looking at her friends. "I just realized I . . . um . . . forgot my pencil box. I'll see you at school!"
테렐은 한숨을 쉬었다. "아마도 네 말이 맞을 거야."
바로 그때 록시의 시계가 삑 하며 울렸다.
"아!" 록시는 친구들을 쳐다보며 말했다. "방금 생각났는데, 내가…… 음…… 필통을 깜빡했어. 학교에서 보자!"
"Wait!" called Terrell as Roxy hurried away. "You can borrow one of my pencils!"
But Roxy was already gone. She went around the corner and made sure nobody was nearby.
"잠깐!" 록시가 서둘러 가버리자 테렐이 외쳤다. "내 연필을 빌려도 돼!"
하지만 록시는 이미 사라지고 없었다. 록시는 모퉁이를 돌아서 근처에 아무도 없는지 확인했다.
She pressed a button on her watch. Mayor Bloom's face appeared on the screen. He looked nervous.
"Mayor Bloom, what's wrong?" asked Roxy.
"Metro City needs your help, Rocket Girl," said the mayor.
록시는 시계에 있는 버튼을 눌렀다. 블룸 시장님의 얼굴이 화면에 나타났다. 시장은 불안한 표정이었다.
"블룸 시장님, 무슨 일이죠?" 록시는 물었다.
"메트로 시티가 네 도움이 필요하다, 로켓걸." 시장은 말했다.
"Dinosaurs are roaming all over downtown Metro City!"
"But dinosaurs are extinct," said Roxy, confused.
"These dinosaurs aren't!" said the mayor. "Now please, help!"
"Don't worry, Mayor," said Roxy. "I'm on my way!"
"메트로 시티 시내에 온통 공룡들이 돌아다니고 있어!"
"하지만 공룡들은 멸종됐잖아요." 록시는 어리둥절해 하며 말했다.
"이 공룡들은 아니야!" 시장은 말했다. "자 부탁이야, 도와줘!"
"걱정 마세요, 시장님." 록시는 말했다. "제가 갑니다!"
