After Fritz had added another seat to his kayak, we were ready to gather oysters. Jack rode with Fritz in the kayak. Mother and Franz stayed behind while Ernest joined me on the sailboat.
We arrived in beautiful Pearl Bay, where we worked hard for two days. The following morning Fritz led us out of the bay.
프리츠가 카약에 자리를 하나 더 추가한 뒤에 우리는 굴을 채취할 준비가 되어 있었다. 잭은 프리츠와 함께 카약에 탔다. 아내와 프란츠는 집에 남았고, 어네스트는 나와 함께 돛단배에 탔다.

Jack and Ernest were busy with the sails. So they did not notice when Fritz waved to me and turned his kayak in the opposite direction. I watched him quickly vanish behind a point.
"Where's Fritz?" Jack asked suddenly.
"He wanted to explore more of the coast," I said.
잭과 어네스트는 돛을 다루느라고 분주했다. 그래서 둘은 프리츠가 나에게 손을 흔들고 반대 방향으로 카약을 돌리는 것을 눈치채지 못했다. 나는 프리츠가 바다로 돌출된 땅 뒤로 재빨리 사라지는 것을 지켜보았다.

"If he finds something interesting, he may be gone for two or three days."
The boys accepted my explanation without question. That evening we sailed into our own Safety Bay.
Five days passed and Fritz still had not returned. I tried to hide my anxiety but finally decided that we should go looking for him. Everyone was delighted at the idea.
"뭔가 흥미로운 것을 발견하면 이삼일은 갔다 올 수도 있어."
아이들은 두말 않고 나의 설명을 받아들였다. 그날 저녁 우리는 안전한 만으로 항해해 들어갔다.

Even my wife agreed to accompany us in the sailboat.
Our beautiful little boat bounded over the water in the bright sunshine. We were almost at Pearl Bay when I saw a dark mass just under the water.
"That's a big rock," I said.
"There's another one!" shouted Jack.
심지어 나의 아내도 돛단배를 타고 우리와 동행하기로 했다.
밝은 햇살 속에서 우리의 아름다운 작은 돛단배는 물 위로 넘실거렸다. 진주만에 거의 다 도착했을 때 나는 물 바로 밑에 있는 어떤 검은 형체를 보았다.

"That rock is moving!" cried Franz.
"That's not a rock," said Ernest. "That's a whale!"
We watched as the whales rose from the water around us. "They're coming up to breathe," Ernest explained.
Suddenly Jack grabbed my arm. "Father, look over there. Near that rock."
"저 바위는 움직이고 있어요!" 프란츠가 외쳤다.
"저건 바위가 아니에요." 어네스트가 말했다. "저건 고래예요!"
우리는 주변에서 고래들이 물 밖으로 올라오는 것을 지켜보았다. "숨쉬기 위해 올라오는 거예요." 어네스트가 설명해주었다.
갑자기 잭이 나의 팔을 붙잡았다. "아버지, 저기 보세요. 저 바위 근처요."
I glanced over just in time to see a native hiding his canoe behind a rock. The man stood up for a moment and peered intently at us. Then he ducked behind the rock. A moment later he came out and started paddling toward us.
"Hoist a white flag to show we're friendly," I ordered.
나는 휙 돌아보았고 때마침 자기 카누를 바위 뒤에 숨기는 원주민을 보았다. 그 남자는 잠시 일어나서 우리를 유심히 쳐다보았다. 그러다가 그는 바위 뒤로 몸을 휙 숨겼다. 잠시 후에 그는 나와서 우리를 향해 노를 젓기 시작했다.

"And hand me the megaphone."
I seized the megaphone and uttered the few friendly words I knew in the Malay language. But neither my words nor the white flag produced the right effect. The native turned his boat and headed back toward shore.
"그리고 나한테 확성기를 건네줘."
나는 확성기를 붙잡고 내가 아는 말레이어로 친절한 몇 마디 말을 했다. 하지만 내 말도, 흰 깃발도 제대로 된 효과를 내지 못했다. 그 원주민은 배를 돌려 다시 해안으로 향했다.
Jack lost patience and grabbed the megaphone.
"Come here and make friends with us or we'll—"
"Stop! Stop!" I cried. "You will only alarm the man with your wild words and gestures."
"But look, Father," said Jack. "He's paddling straight for us again."
잭은 더 이상 참지 못하고 내 확성기를 잡아채갔다.
"이리로 와서 우리랑 친구가 되지 않으면 우리가—"
"그만하렴! 그만해!" 나는 외쳤다. "네 난폭한 말들과 몸짓으로 저 남자를 놀라게만 할 거야."
"하지만 보세요, 아버지." 잭은 말했다. "다시 노를 저어 우리에게 곧장 다가오고 있어요."
"The villain has Fritz's kayak!" said Franz.
Among the boys only Ernest remained calm. He took the megaphone from Jack and addressed the man in the kayak. "Welcome aboard, Fritz!" he said.
No sooner were the words out of his mouth than we all recognized Fritz. In a few more minutes he was on board the sailboat.
"저 악당이 프리츠의 카약을 가지고 있어요!" 프란츠가 말했다.

Mother threw her arms around him as we peppered him with questions.
"Where have you been?" asked Jack.
"Why have you been gone so long?" asked Franz.
"Why were you hiding from us?" demanded Ernest.
"Slow down." Fritz laughed.
아내는 프리츠를 와락 껴안았고 우리는 프리츠에게 질문을 퍼부었다.
"어디 갔었어?" 잭이 물었다.
"왜 그렇게 오래 떠나 있었던 거야?" 프란츠가 물었다.
"왜 숨었던 거야?" 어네스트가 따지듯 물었다.
"침착해." 프리츠는 웃었다.
"I never dreamed you'd come after me in the sailboat. I thought you must be Malay pirates. When you addressed me in that language, I was sure you were pirates! But then I recognized Jack."
"Do you know a good spot where we can anchor?" I asked.
"I can lead you to an island where there is a splendid place to anchor."
"돛단배를 타고 나를 뒤쫓아 올지는 꿈에도 몰랐어. 난 말레이 해적들인 줄 알았어. 말레이어로 나한테 말을 걸었을 때에 나는 해적들이라고 확신했지! 하지만 그러다가 잭을 알아보았어."
"우리가 정박할만한 곳을 알고 있니?" 나는 물었다.
"정박할만한 훌륭한 곳이 있는 섬으로 제가 안내할 수 있지요."
He gave me a glance full of meaning. "The island itself contains all sorts of interesting things."
Now that I knew Fritz's expedition had succeeded, it was time to tell my wife. When she heard about the Englishwoman's message, she was almost overcome with emotion.
프리츠는 나에게 의미심장한 눈빛을 힐끗 보냈다. "그 섬 자체도 온갖 흥미로운 것들을 담고 있어요."
이제 프리츠의 원정이 성공했다는 것을 알게 되었으니 아내에게 말해줄 때가 되었다. 아내는 영국 여성의 메시지에 관한 이야기를 듣자 거의 흥분을 이기지 못했다.
"Another human being—another woman!—here with us," she said. "But why didn't you tell me about her before this?"
"I didn't want to raise your hopes until I was sure," I replied.
It was difficult to conceal our excitement from the boys, who sensed that something was about to happen. As soon as the anchor was dropped, they eagerly sprang ashore.
"또 다른 사람이—또 다른 여인이! —여기 우리와 함께 있어요." 아내는 말했다. "그런데 이전에 왜 나한테 말해주지 않았나요?"
"확실해지기 전까지 당신의 기대감을 높이고 싶지 않았어요." 나는 대답했다.
아이들은 어떤 일이 일어나기 직전이라는 것을 알아챘고, 그들에게서 우리의 흥분을 감추기는 어려웠다. 닻을 내리자마자 아이들은 해변으로 뛰어갔다.
We all followed Fritz in silence. Suddenly the trail ended in front of a shelter made of tree branches. A cheerful fire burned in front of it. Fritz dove into the shelter, leaving his brothers behind. In another moment he emerged, leading a small, handsome youth by the hand. From his clothing, the young man appeared to be an officer in the English navy.
우리는 모두 조용히 프리츠를 따라갔다. 나뭇가지로 만든 오두막 앞에서 길이 갑자기 끊겼다. 그 앞에는 불이 기분 좋게 타오르고 있었다. 프리츠는 다른 형제들은 뒤에 남겨두고 그 오두막 안으로 뛰어들어갔다. 잠시 후에 프리츠는 키가 작고 잘생긴 젊은이의 손을 잡아 이끌고 나타났다. 입고 있는 옷으로 보아하니 그 청년은 영국 해군의 장교인 듯했다.
Radiant with joy, Fritz said, "I would like to introduce Edward Montrose. Please welcome him into our family circle as a friend and a brother."
I stared at the young man. For some reason the Englishwoman wanted us to think she was a man.
프리츠는 기뻐하며 환한 표정으로 말했다. "에드워드 몬트로즈를 소개합니다. 우리 집안에 친구로써, 그리고 형제로써 그를 기쁘게 받아들여 주세요."
나는 청년을 빤히 쳐다보았다. 어떤 이유에서인지 이 영국 여성은 우리가 자기를 남자로 생각하기를 바라고 있었다.
