As the next day began to dawn, Sister Simplice was busy preparing some medicine for Fantine. Suddenly she looked up and saw Mayor Madeleine standing in front of her. His first task upon arriving home had been to send a letter to his banker. Then he had come immediately to the infirmary.
"Oh, you startled me!" said Sister Simplice. "And something terrible must have happened to you because your hair has turned completely white!"
"What are you talking about?"
Sister Simplice found a mirror and showed the mayor his reflection.
"Imagine that," he said quietly. "How’s Fantine?"
Sister Simplice explained that Fantine had improved because she believed that he had gone to fetch Cosette.
다음 날이 밝기 시작하자 생플리스 수녀는 팡틴을 위해 약을 준비하느라 분주했다. 갑자기 그녀는 올려다보았고 앞에 서 있는 마들렌 시장을 보았다. 집에 도착하자마자 그가 처음으로 한 일은 그의 은행원에게 편지를 쓰는 것이었다. 그런 다음 그는 의무실로 곧장 왔다.
"오, 깜짝 놀랐잖아요!" 생플리스 수녀는 말했다. "그리고 머리카락이 완전히 하얘진 걸 보니 뭔가 끔찍한 일이 생긴 게 분명하네요!"
"무슨 말이오?"
생플리스 수녀는 거울을 찾아서 시장에게 거울에 비친 그의 모습을 보여주었다.
"어떻게 이런 일이." 그는 조용히 말했다. "팡틴은 어떻소?"
생플리스 수녀는 팡틴은 시장이 코제트를 데리러 갔다고 믿었기 때문에 나아졌다고 설명했다.
Somehow the nun knew that he hadn’t been to Montfermeil. "What will we tell her when she realizes Cosette is not here?" asked Sister Simplice. "It would be wrong to lie to her. Are you going to get Cosette soon?"
"Of course, but it’ll take some time. May I see Fantine now?"
The sick young woman opened her eyes when the mayor entered.
"Where is Cosette?" she asked, radiating happiness as she said her daughter’s name.
Just then the doctor entered the room.
"Stay calm, my dear," said the doctor. "Your child is here, but you cannot see her until you’re cured. The excitement of seeing her will make your illness worse."
"I’m well!" insisted Fantine, trying to sit up. She fell back, coughing against her pillow. "But perhaps you’re right."
After the doctor and Sister Simplice left the room, the mayor sat by her bed, holding her hand.
어쩐 일인지 수녀는 그가 몽페르메에 가지 않았다는 것을 알고 있었다. "코제트가 오지 않았다는 것을 팡틴이 알게 되면 뭐라고 말하지요?" 생플리스 수녀는 물었다. "팡틴에게 거짓말하는 건 옳지 않을 겁니다. 곧 코제트를 데리고 올 건가요?"
"물론이오. 하지만 시간이 좀 걸릴 거요. 지금 팡틴을 봐도 되겠소?"
시장이 들어오자 병든 젊은 여인은 눈을 떴다.
"코제트는 어디 있습니까?" 팡틴은 물었다. 그녀는 딸의 이름을 말하면서 행복으로 빛났다.
바로 그때 의사가 방에 들어왔다.
"진정해요." 의사는 말했다. "아이는 여기 왔지만 다 나을 때까지 볼 수 없어요. 아이를 보고 흥분하면 병이 더 악화될 거예요."
"저는 다 나았어요!" 팡틴은 일어나 앉으려고 애쓰며 고집했다. 그녀는 베개에 대고 기침을 하며 다시 쓰러졌다. "하지만 아마도 선생님 말씀이 옳은 것 같아요."
의사와 생플리스 수녀가 방에서 나간 뒤에 시장은 그녀의 손을 잡고 침대 옆에 앉았다.
"Montfermeil is such a pretty place, isn’t it, Mayor Madeleine? And what did you think of the Thenardiers?"
The mayor looked anxiously at Fantine, but before he could say anything, she cried out. "I hear my darling singing!"
A child was playing in the courtyard, the daughter of a servant. It was this little girl whom Fantine heard. Fantine held her breath and listened with a look of joy on her face.
"It’s my Cosette! Oh, how happy we’ll be! She’ll chase butterflies in the grass, and I’ll teach her the alphabet. And then when she’s older, she’ll. . ."
A look of horror crossed Fantine’s face as she pointed to something behind the mayor.
"Good grief! What’s the matter, Fantine?" Madeleine turned and there, leaning against the doorway, stood Javert.
Fantine had not seen the policeman since the day he had arrested her, and she was sure he had now come for her.
"몽페르메는 정말로 예쁜 곳이지요, 마들렌 시장님? 그리고 시장님께서는 테나르디에 부부에 대해 어떻게 생각하셨습니까?"
시장은 걱정스럽게 팡틴을 바라보았지만 그가 뭐라고 말하기도 전에 팡틴이 외쳤다. "내 사랑하는 아이의 노랫소리가 들려요!"
하인의 딸인 아이가 안마당에서 놀고 있었다. 팡틴이 들은 것은 이 어린 소녀였다. 팡틴은 숨을 죽이고 기쁜 표정으로 귀를 기울였다.
"나의 코제트에요! 오, 우리는 정말 행복할 거예요! 코제트는 풀 속에서 나비를 쫓을 거고 나는 아이에게 알파벳을 가르쳐 줄 거예요. 그리고 그 다음에 나이가 들면 아이는……."
팡틴은 시장 뒤에 있는 뭔가를 가리키며 얼굴에 공포 어린 표정이 스쳤다.
"맙소사! 무슨 일이오, 팡틴?" 마들렌은 돌아보았고 그곳엔 자베르가 문에 기대 서 있었다.
팡틴은 그 경찰관에게 체포당했던 날 이후로 그를 본 적이 없었고 이제 그 경찰관이 자신을 잡으러 온 것이라고 확신했다.
"Mayor Madeleine, save me!" she screamed.
Jean Valjean, whom Fantine knew as Mayor Madeleine, stood up. He turned to Fantine and said in his kindest voice, "Calm yourself. It’s not for you that this man comes." Then Valjean looked steadily at Javert and said, "I know what you want."
"Hurry up," said Javert.
Fantine looked around in confusion. There was no one in the room except the mayor and the policeman. Javert must be talking to her, no matter what the mayor said. Then she saw something so odd, stranger than anything that had appeared to her when she was delirious with fever. She saw Javert seize the mayor by the collar, and the mayor bow his head.
"Mayor Madeleine!" shouted Fantine.
Javert burst into a horrid laugh, displaying all his teeth.
"마들렌 시장님, 저를 구해주세요!" 그녀는 외쳤다.
팡틴이 마들렌 시장으로 알고 있던 장발장은 일어났다. 그는 팡틴을 돌아보고 그의 가장 상냥한 목소리로 말했다. "진정해요. 이 사람은 당신을 보러 온 게 아니에요." 그런 다음 발장은 자베르를 가만히 쳐다보고 말했다. "원하는 게 무엇인지 알고 있소."
"서두르시오." 자베르는 말했다.
팡틴은 어리둥절해하며 둘러보았다. 그 방 안에는 시장과 경찰관 말고는 아무도 없었다. 시장이 뭐라고 했든 간에 자베르는 그녀에게 말하고 있는 것이 분명했다. 그러다가 그녀는 너무도 이상한 광경을 보았고 그것은 고열로 의식이 혼미했을 때에 앞에 나타났던 것들보다 더 이상한 것이었다. 그녀는 자베르가 시장의 멱살을 잡고 시장이 고개를 숙이는 것을 보았다.
"마들렌 시장님!" 팡틴은 외쳤다.
자베르는 이를 다 드러내며 불쾌한 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
"There is no Mayor Madeleine here any longer!"
Valjean did not attempt to loosen Javert’s grip on his collar. "Javert—"
"Call me Monsieur Inspector."
"Monsieur, I would like to say something to you in private."
"No, speak now."
"It’s a confidential matter, so I’d like—"
"What difference does that make to me?"
Valjean turned his head and said, "Give me three days so I can go for the child of this unfortunate woman and make some arrangements for her! I’ll pay whatever’s necessary, and you can come with me if you want." He said all this as quickly and quietly as possible.
"Are you making fun of me?" asked Javert. "You tell me you’re going to get this woman’s child?
"이곳에는 더 이상 마들렌 시장이 없다!"
발장은 그의 멱살을 잡은 자베르의 손아귀를 풀려고 하지도 않았다. "자베르—"
"경감님이라고 부르시오."
"경감님, 단둘이서 조용히 하고 싶은 말이 있습니다."
"아니. 지금 말하시오."
"은밀하게 했으면 하는 말이어서, 저는—"
"그래서 나한테 달라지는 게 뭔데?"
발장은 고개를 돌리고 말했다. "이 불행한 여인의 아이를 데리러 가고 그녀를 위한 준비를 할 수 있도록 사흘만 주시오! 필요한 돈은 다 내겠습니다. 그리고 원하면 함께 가도 좋아요." 그는 이 모든 얘기를 가능한 한 빠르고 조용하게 했다.
"나를 놀리는 건가?" 자베르는 물었다. "이 여자의 아이를 데리러 간다고?
"You might as well come right out and ask me for three days to escape. Ha-ha! That’s a good one!"
"Going for my child?" Fantine shivered. "Do you mean she’s not here? Where is Cosette? Monsieur Mayor!"
Javert stamped his foot. "Be quiet! What kind of country is this where convicts are mayors and common criminals are nursed like countesses? I tell you again there’s no Monsieur Mayor here. There is a robber, a lawbreaker, a convict named Jean Valjean, and I’ve got him! That’s what there is!"
Fantine started to sit up. She looked at Valjean, then at Javert. She opened her mouth as if to speak, and then suddenly sank back upon the pillow with her eyes closed.
Valjean put his hand over Javert’s and pulled the policeman’s fingers from his collar.
"대놓고 탈출하게 사흘을 달라고 묻는 편이 낫겠군. 하하! 거짓말 마시오!"
"제 아이를 데리러 간다고요?" 팡틴은 몸을 떨었다. "여기 없다는 말씀이신가요? 코제트는 어디 있죠? 시장님!"
자베르는 발을 쾅쾅 굴렀다. "조용히 해! 재소자가 시장이고 일반 범죄자들이 백작부인처럼 간호받는 이 나라는 도대체 어떤 나라야? 다시 한 번 말하지만 이곳에 시장님은 없다. 장발장이라는 도둑이자 범법자, 그리고 재소자가 있고 내가 그를 잡았어! 있는 건 그거야!"
팡틴은 일어나 앉기 시작했다. 그녀는 발장을 쳐다본 뒤 자베르를 쳐다보다. 그녀는 말을 하려는 듯 입을 벌렸다가 갑자기 눈을 감은 채 베개 위로 다시 털썩 쓰러졌다.
발장은 자베르의 손 위에 자신의 손을 얹고 멱살을 잡고 있던 그 경찰관의 손가락을 떼어냈다.
He quickly checked Fantine’s pulse and then whirled back toward Javert. "You have killed this woman!"
"I don’t have time for this. Come along now before I call the guard downstairs and have him handcuff you."
In the corner of the room there was an old bed with a metal frame. It was where the nuns rested when they had to watch over a patient at night. Valjean rushed to the bed and wrenched a metal bar from the frame. It was an easy thing for a man of his strength to accomplish.
"I advise you not to disturb me now," said Valjean quietly.
Javert stood by the door while Valjean knelt next to Fantine’s bed. He whispered something to her, took her hand, and gently kissed it.
Valjean stood up and said to Javert, "Now I am free to leave with you."
The mayor’s arrest produced a sensation in the town.

그 방 한구석에는 철제 테두리가 달린 낡은 침대가 하나 있었다. 수녀들이 밤에 환자를 보살펴줘야 할 때에 쉬는 침대였다. 발장은 그 침대로 재빨리 가서 테두리에서 쇠막대 하나를 비틀어 떼어냈다. 발장과 같은 힘이 있는 사람에게는 하기 쉬운 일이었다.
"지금 나를 방해하지 않는 게 좋을 겁니다." 발장은 조용히 말했다.
발장이 팡틴의 침대 옆에 무릎을 꿇는 동안 자베르는 문가에 서 있었다. 발장은 팡틴의 귀에 뭔가를 속삭이고는 그녀의 손을 잡고 부드럽게 그 손에 입을 맞췄다.
발장은 일어나서 자베르에게 말했다. "나는 이제 당신과 함께 떠날 수 있습니다."
시장의 체포는 마을에 돌풍을 일으켰다.
In less than two hours, his good deeds were forgotten as everyone discussed the convict in their midst.
That night Valjean’s housekeeper was thinking sadly about the mayor when he suddenly walked in the door.
"Monsieur Mayor! I thought you were—"
"In jail? I broke a bar from a window, jumped from a roof, and here I am. Find Sister Simplice for me. It’s urgent!"
Valjean went up to his room. He quickly wrapped up the silver candlesticks and packed them with some other things.
"Do you wish to see Fantine’s body one last time?" asked Sister Simplice when she arrived.
"No, I’m leaving some money here for her burial. Make sure the priest gets it."
At that moment there was the sound of voices downstairs.
모두가 그들 가운데 있었던 재소자에 관해 이야기하며 두 시간도 채 안 되어 그의 선행들은 잊혀졌다.
그날 밤, 발장의 가정부가 슬픔에 잠겨 그에 대해 생각하고 있는데 갑자기 발장이 문으로 걸어 들어왔다.
"시장님! 저는 시장님께서—"
"감옥에 간 줄 알았다고? 나는 창문에 있는 창살 하나를 부러뜨려서 지붕에서 뛰어내렸고 여기 왔소. 생플리스 수녀를 찾아주시오. 급한 일이오!"
발장은 그의 방으로 갔다. 그는 재빨리 은촛대들을 포장했고 몇몇 다른 물건들과 함께 짐을 꾸렸다.
"마지막으로 한 번 팡틴의 시신을 보고 싶습니까?" 생플리스 수녀는 도착하자 물었다.
"아니, 나는 팡틴의 장례식을 위해 돈을 두고 갈 거요. 반드시 신부님께서 그 돈을 받도록 해주시오."
바로 그 순간 아래층에서 사람들의 목소리가 들렸다.
"I swear that no one has come in here all day," said the housekeeper.
"But there’s a light upstairs," said Javert.
Valjean blew out his candle and hid behind the door.
When Javert burst through the door, Sister Simplice was kneeling in prayer by the light of one small candle. Javert hesitated. He had great respect for authority and especially for the church, so he didn’t want to disturb a nun at prayer. And yet. . .
"Sister, Valjean has escaped and we’re looking for him. Have you seen him?"
Sister Simplice raised her eyes. "No."
An hour later a man carrying a bundle walked rapidly out of town, headed in the direction of Paris.
"하루 종일 이곳에 아무도 오지 않았다고 맹세합니다." 가정부는 말했다.
"하지만 위층에 불빛이 있잖소." 자베르가 말했다.
발장은 들고 있던 촛불을 불어서 끄고 문 뒤에 숨었다.
자베르가 그 문으로 불쑥 들어왔을 때에 생플리스 수녀는 작은 촛불의 불빛 옆에서 무릎을 꿇고 기도하고 있었다. 자베르는 망설였다. 그는 권위에 대한 존경심이 깊었고 특히 교회의 권위에 대한 존경이 깊었기에 기도하는 수녀를 방해하고 싶지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고…….
