The Boneyard Brass Band was playing "The Creature Conga," but Ben didn't feel like joining in. He floated to a corner and watched the line of monsters go by. He was miserable, while everyone else seemed to be having a great time.
Gaby and Waldo danced past and waved happily at Ben.

The next time they passed Ben, Waldo broke out of the line. "Where's Winnie?" he asked.
Ben sighed. "She's mad at me. I tried to explain everything to her, but she thought I was lying."
"Oh, man," said Waldo. "It's my fault for asking you to come to the lab. Do you want me to cast a love spell on Winnie?

Ben shook his head. "No, thanks." He remembered what had happened the last time Waldo cast a love spell. Plus it seemed wrong to do that to Winnie.
"Okay," said Waldo. "Let me know if you change your mind. I'm really sorry."
"집으로 얼른 가서 주문 책을 가져오면 돼."
벤은 고개를 흔들었다. "괜찮아." 벤은 지난 번 월도가 사랑의 주문을 걸었을 때 어떤 일이 일어났는지를 기억했다. 게다가 위니에게 그렇게 하는 건 옳지 않은 것 같았다.
"알았어." 월도가 말했다. "마음이 바뀌면 알려줘. 정말 미안해."
The wizard headed back to the dance floor while Ben grabbed a slug cupcake. Then he found a different corner to sit in.
As the skeleton band started playing a new song, Ben noticed something strange—purple fog spreading through the gym. A few monsters had stopped dancing to stare at it.
그 마법사는 댄스 플로어로 돌아갔고, 벤은 민달팽이 컵케이크 하나를 집었다. 그러고 나서 다른 구석으로 가서 앉았다.

"Cool!" said Mog.
"That fog is pretty!" said a girl skeleton.
"Just like you," replied the ghoul she was dancing with.
"That's odd," Ben thought as more fog seeped into the gymnasium. "It looks like the purple fog from the science lab."
"멋지다!" 모그가 말했다.
"저 안개 참 예쁘다!" 한 해골 소녀가 말했다.
"너처럼." 함께 춤을 추고 있던 악귀가 말했다.
"정말 이상하군." 체육관 안으로 더 많은 안개가 스며들어오자 벤은 생각했다. "과학 실험실에서 나온 보라색 안개 같아."
Soon monsters started to cough, and the band stopped playing.
"Everything is totally under control!" shouted Mr. Freaky. The principal ran around the gymnasium, opening windows. "I'm not sure what this fog is—probably just part of the decorations. We'll get it cleared out in a moment! Oh, I hope Miss Bungle gets better soon. I can barely run this school without her!"
곧 몬스터들은 기침을 하기 시작했고, 밴드는 연주를 멈췄다.
"모든 게 잘 되어 가고 있습니다!" 프리키 교장 선생님이 소리쳤다. 교장 선생님은 체육관을 뛰어 다니며 창문들을 열고 있었다. "이 안개가 뭔지는 모르겠지만—아마도 그냥 장식의 일부일 겁니다. 금방 없어질 거예요! 오, 벙글 선생님이 얼른 나았으면 좋겠어. 벙글 선생님 없이는 이 학교를 운영할 수가 없을 거 같아!"
After a few minutes, the fog cleared. Bones rattled as the skeleton band started playing again.
Across the room Ben saw Winnie start dancing with Zork again. "I'm out of here," he decided, heading for the exit. "What a miserable night," he thought. He could forget about ever dancing with Winnie—she was barely speaking to him now.
잠시 후에 안개는 걷혔다. 해골 밴드가 다시 연주를 시작하자 뼈들이 덜거덕거렸다.
건너편에서 위니가 조크와 다시 춤을 추기 시작하는 것을 벤은 보았다. "여길 나가야겠어." 벤은 이렇게 결정하고 출구로 향했다. "정말 끔찍한 밤이야."그는 생각했다. 위니하고 춤추는 건 아예 잊어버릴 수 있었다. 위니는 이제 벤과 말도 거의 하지 않았다.
During homeroom on Monday, Winnie didn't look at Ben. He thought about trying to explain things again, but suddenly Mr. Freaky's voice blared over the loudspeaker.
"Attention, students. We will have a short assembly this morning."
"Uh-oh," a few kids murmured.
월요일 홈룸 시간에 위니는 벤을 쳐다보지 않았다. 벤은 다시 설명을 해보려고 했지만, 갑자기 프리키 교장 선생님의 목소리가 스피커에서 요란하게 울려 나왔다.
"주목하세요, 학생 여러분. 오늘 아침에 짧은 조회를 할 겁니다."
"아이고." 아이들 몇이 중얼거렸다.
Ben wondered what the assembly was about. Maybe something about the dance . . . the purple fog? It could even be about what happened in the science lab with Waldo's experiment.
Students filed into the auditorium, and Mr. Freaky stepped up to the microphone. "Good morning, everyone. The Monster Mash dance was a terrific success."
벤은 무엇 때문에 조회를 하는지 궁금했다. 아마 댄스 파티에 관한 것이라면…… 그 보라색 안개때문일까? 월도의 실험과 관련해 과학 실험실에서 일어났던 일에 관한 것인지도 몰랐다.
학생들은 줄지어 강당으로 들어갔고, 프리키 교장 선생님은 마이크 앞으로 올라갔다. "안녕하세요, 여러분. 몬스터매시 댄스는 굉장한 성공이었습니다."
Around Ben, students clapped and cheered.
"As you know," Mr. Freaky continued, "the mayor's wife, Mrs. Hubbletree, was at the dance. She had a wonderful time! In fact, she thinks the students of People Place should take a field trip to visit us. That way, more humans can get to know monsters. Maybe they won't be so scared of us anymore."
벤 주위에 있는 학생들은 손뼉을 치며 환호했다.
"여러분도 알겠지만." 프리키 교장 선생님은 계속했다. "시장님의 부인인 허블트리 여사가 댄스 파티에 계셨습니다. 아주 즐거운 시간을 보내셨습니다! 사실은 피플 플레이스의 학생들이 현장 학습 때 우리를 방문하면 좋겠다고 허블트리 여사는 생각하십니다. 그렇게 되면 더 많은 인간들이 몬스터들을 알게 되겠지요. 어쩌면 우리를 더는 그렇게 무서워하지 않게 될지도 모르겠어요."
A goblin looked worried. "You mean, a whole bunch of humans will come to Monster Academy at once?"
"Yes," replied Mr. Freaky.
A troll shivered. "Scary!"
"Dave is a human," Jen reminded everyone. "He's not scary at all."
한 도깨비는 걱정스러운 표정이었다. "그 말은 엄청 많은 인간들이 한꺼번에 몬스터 아카데미에 온단 말이에요?"
"그래요." 프리키 교장 선생님이 대답했다.
트롤 하나가 몸을 떨었다. "무서워!"
"데이브도 인간이야." 젠은 모두에게 상기시켜 주었다. "데이브는 전혀 무섭지 않잖아."
"Now, students." Mr. Freaky held up his hands. "This will be fun! And if everything goes well, Mayor Hubbletree will consider taking down the fence that separates Monsterville and People Place. Wouldn't that be wonderful?"
The students clapped politely, but Ben could tell that a few were nervous.
"자자, 학생 여러분." 프리키 교장 선생님이 양손을 쳐들었다. "이건 재미있을 거예요! 그리고 모든 것이 잘 되면 허블트리 시장은 몬스터빌과 피플 플레이스를 분리하는 울타리를 허무는 것도 고려할 거예요. 그렇게 된다면 정말 좋을 것 같지 않아요?"

"We do need to prepare for our guests," Mr. Freaky added. The principal spent the next few minutes explaining that the school had to be cleaned from top to bottom. "No more slime trails or drool puddles," said Mr. Freaky. "And I've heard that humans like something called pizza. We'll see if we can order some of that.

"Finally," Mr. Freaky said, "we'll all need to act a bit more . . . humanlike."
Mog raised his hand. "What does that mean?"
"It means we should not do some of the things that we normally do," said Mr. Freaky. "The zombies should try not to drool too much.
"마지막으로." 프리키 교장 선생님이 말했다. "우리는 좀 더... 인간처럼 행동해야 할 겁니다."
모그는 손을 들었다. "그게 무슨 뜻이에요?"
"그건 우리가 보통 하는 행동의 일부를 하지 않아야 한다는 뜻이에요." 프리키 선생님이 말했다. "좀비들은 침을 너무 많이 흘리지 않도록 해야 해요.
"Witches and wizards—limit your mind reading and scary magic spells. And to all you ghosts, please remember to avoid floating through walls in front of the humans. It tends to scare them."
Ben felt hot all over. "I couldn't do that even if I wanted to," he thought, shooting a glance at Winnie.
"마녀들과 마법사들은— 독심술과 무서운 마법 주문들은 좀 자제하세요. 그리고 유령들은 모두 인간들 앞에서 벽을 통과해 떠가는 것은 피해야 한다는 것을 기억하세요. 인간들을 겁먹게 하는 경향이 있으니까요.
벤은 온몸이 달아오르는 것 같았다. "나는 그렇게 하고 싶었어도 못 했는데." 벤은 위니를 흘끗 보며 생각했다.
