Wukong gasped as his companions began to look ill.
The Tang Monk’s head bobbed forward, and his teacup dropped from his hand. And then—thump! The monk toppled to the floor. A moment later Wujing and Bajie passed out too.
동료들이 아파 보이기 시작하자 오공은 숨이 막힐 듯이 놀랐다.
삼장법사의 머리가 앞으로 까딱거렸고, 그의 찻잔이 손에서 떨어졌다. 그러고 나서는—꽝! 삼장법사는 바닥으로 넘어졌다. 잠시 후 사오정과 저팔계도 정신을 잃었다.
"Evil villain!" Wukong jumped to his feet and pulled out his iron bar. The priest backed away.
Just then a door burst open, and the three women ran into the room.
"You again?" cried the monkey.
"사악한 악당놈!" 오공은 벌떡 일어나 여의봉을 꺼냈다. 승려는 뒷걸음질쳤다.
바로 그때 문이 확 열렸고, 세 여자가 방 안으로 뛰어들어왔다.
"또 너희들이냐?" 원숭이가 소리쳤다.
He leaped out of the way as the women shot webs at him. He jumped up, did a flip in the air, and landed directly behind the women. Furiously, he slammed his iron bar down. Wham! There was a puff of smoke. When it cleared, a dead spider lay where one of the women had been.
여자들이 오공에게 거미줄을 쏘자 그는 펄쩍 뛰어 피했다. 오공은 위로 뛰어올라 공중에서 공중제비를 넘고는 그 여자들 바로 뒤에 내려섰다. 오공은 여의봉을 맹렬히 내려쳤다. 펑! 한줄기 연기가 피어올랐다. 연기가 걷히자 죽은 거미 한 마리가 여자들 중 하나가 있던 자리에 누워 있었다.
The other two women stared in horror.
"He destroyed our sister!" cried one.
"He’s a monster!" cried the other.
Wukong charged toward them. He knocked flying webs out of his way and then . . . Crack! Bam!
다른 여자 둘은 공포에 질려 빤히 쳐다보았다.
"그놈이 우리 자매를 죽였어!" 한 여자가 소리쳤다.
"그놈은 괴물이야!" 다른 여자가 소리쳤다.
오공은 그들을 향해 돌진했다. 그는 날아오는 거미줄을 쳐서 제거하고는…… 쿵! 꽝!
Both women were gone. In their places lay dead spiders.
"Those spider spirits were my dear friends!" cried the priest. His eyes burned with fury. "You will regret destroying them."
The priest opened his robe, revealing a body covered in eyes. Suddenly, blinding light shot from the many eyes.
여자들은 둘 다 사라지고 없었다. 그들의 자리에는 죽은 거미들이 놓여 있었다.
"그 거미 혼령들은 내 절친한 친구들이었어!" 승려가 소리쳤다. 그의 눈은 분노로 타올랐다. "그들을 죽인 걸 후회하게 될 것이다."
승려는 긴 옷을 벌려 눈들로 뒤덮인 몸을 드러냈다. 갑자기 그 수많은 눈에서 눈부신 빛이 발사되었다.
"Aargh! The light is too bright!" cried the monkey. He covered his own eyes and ran all over the room. But he couldn't escape the blinding light.
Finally he slammed his iron bar into the abbey's stone floor. A huge hole opened up.
"악! 빛이 너무 밝아!" 원숭이는 소리쳤다. 그는 자신의 눈을 가리고 온 방 안을 이리저리 뛰어다녔다. 그러나 그 눈부신 빛을 피할 수가 없었다.
마침내 그는 여의봉으로 수도원의 돌 바닥을 내리쳤다. 거대한 구멍이 생겼다.
The monkey jumped in and turned into a mole. Using his claws, he tunneled until he was sure he was far from the abbey.
When Wukong popped up out of the ground, he turned back into himself. Bright light was shining from the abbey. Even from far away, the light burned the monkey’s eyes.
원숭이는 그 속으로 뛰어들어 두더지로 변했다. 그는 발톱을 사용하여 수도원으로부터 멀리 떨어졌다는 확신이 들 때까지 굴을 팠다.
오공은 땅에서 튀어나오자 자기 모습으로 돌아갔다. 밝은 빛이 수도원으로부터 비치고 있었다. 빛은 아주 멀리서도 원숭이의 눈을 화끈거리게 했다.
Wukong turned away. "What will I do? I have no way to save my friends. That priest’s light is too powerful."
He sobbed and sobbed until he heard a voice say, "Don’t cry, Wukong."
The monkey looked up. A tall woman was standing over him.
오공은 고개를 돌렸다. "어떻게 하지? 내 친구들을 구할 방법이 없어. 저 승려의 빛은 너무 강력해."
흐느껴 울고 울던 그는 누군가의 목소리를 들었다. "울지 마라, 오공."
원숭이는 올려다보았다. 어떤 키가 큰 여자가 그를 내려다보며 서 있었다.
"I am the bodhisattva Pralambra," said the woman. "That priest is a centipede spirit, called the Demon Lord of Many Eyes. I am the only one who can defeat him."
Pralambra pulled a small needle from her sleeve. Turning, she threw the needle into the beams of light. Crack!
"나는 비람파 보살이다." 그 여자가 말했다. "그 승려는 백안마군이라고 부르는 지네 혼령이다. 그를 물리칠 수 있는 자는 나밖에 없다."
비람파 보살은 소매에서 작은 바늘을 꺼냈다. 보살은 돌아서서 그 바늘을 빛줄기들 속으로 던졌다. 꽝!
The sound thundered in the sky, and the beams of light vanished.
Wukong and Pralambra returned to the abbey. The priest lay shaking on the floor. All of his eyes were squeezed shut. Pralambra pointed her finger at the priest, and he turned into a giant centipede.
그 소리는 하늘에서 천둥같이 울렸고, 빛줄기들은 사라졌다.
오공과 비람파 보살은 수도원으로 돌아갔다. 승려는 바닥에 누워 몸을 떨고 있었다. 그의 모든 눈들은 꽉 감겨 있었다. 비람파 보살은 승려를 손가락으로 가리켰고, 그는 거대한 지네로 변했다.
Pralambra took a bottle out of her sleeve. "Here, Wukong," said the bodhisattva. "These pills will cure your companions. I will take the centipede with me to be punished."
Wukong bowed. "Thank you, Bodhisattva."
비람파 보살은 소매에서 병을 하나 꺼냈다. "여기 있다, 오공." 보살이 말했다. "이 알약들이 네 동료들을 낫게 해줄 것이다. 나는 지네를 데려가 벌을 받게 하겠다."
오공은 고개 숙여 절했다. "고맙습니다. 보살님."
The journey continued, and many weeks went by.
"The journey has been easy lately," said the Tang Monk one day.
Bajie snorted.
"That’s true," said Wujing. "It’s been weeks since any demons tried to eat Master."
여행은 계속되었고, 여러 주가 지났다.
"최근에는 여행이 수월했구나." 어느 날 삼장법사가 말했다.
저팔계는 코웃음을 쳤다.
"그건 사실입니다." 사오정이 말했다. "악령들이 사부님을 먹으려고 한 지 몇 주나 지났어요."
"The Western Paradise is still far away," Wukong warned the others. "We’ll face many more dangers before we get there."
The Tang Monk smiled. "Relax, Wukong, and enjoy the beautiful day. There is no danger here."
"서방정토는 아직도 아주 멀어요." 오공이 다른 이들에게 경고했다. "우리가 거기 도착하기 전에 더 많은 위험들에 직면할 거예요."
삼장법사는 미소지었다. "긴장을 풀어라, 오공, 그리고 이 아름다운 날을 즐기거라. 여긴 아무것도 위험할 게 없다."
Just then a man appeared up ahead. He was waving his arms frantically.
"Don’t come this way!" shouted the man. "There’s danger ahead—great danger!"
바로 그때 어떤 남자가 저 앞에 나타났다. 그는 양팔을 미친 듯이 흔들고 있었다.
"이쪽으로 오지 마세요!" 그 남자가 소리쳤다. "저 앞에 위험한 것이 있어요—큰 위험이요!"
