"Good morning, everyone," Mr. Icky said in Cooking class the next day. Mr. Freaky stood beside him. "Mr. Freaky has come to tell us some very exciting news."
"Is school ending early today?" a ghoul asked.
The students laughed.
"No more monster math!" a witch shouted.
"좋은 아침이에요, 여러분." 다음 날 요리 수업에서 이키 선생님이 말했다. 프리키 교장 선생님이 그의 옆에 서 있었다. "프리키 교장 선생님께서 우리에게 아주 신나는 소식을 알려주기 위해 오셨어요."

"Yeah!" others cheered.
Mr. Freaky held up his hands. "Everyone, please settle down!" He took out a handkerchief and blew his noses. "A popular cooking show is coming to our town this Friday. It's called Kids' Kitchen Showdown."
"Cool!" a fish monster said.

"I love that TV show!" the witch said. "But I wish the cooks made more good food like tarantula stew. They usually make food for people, like chocolate cake and something called lasagna."
"Yeah," the ghoul said. "Why can't they cook more stuff for monsters?"
"나 그 텔레비전 쇼 정말 좋아해!" 마녀가 말했다. "하지만 요리사들이 타란툴라 스튜 같은 맛있는 음식을 더 만들었으면 좋겠어. 보통은 초콜릿 케이크나 라자냐라고 하는 무슨 사람들 먹는 음식을 만들거든. "
"맞아." 악귀는 말했다. "왜 몬스터들 먹을 음식을 더 만들지 못하지?"
Ben had watched Kids' Kitchen Showdown once or twice with his mom, but he didn't really like it. Why would anyone watch a show about cooking?
Mr. Freaky wrung his hands. "The show was going to be filmed at People Place Middle School. But Mayor Hubbletree suggested they film it here at Monster Academy."
벤은 '키즈 주방 결전'을 엄마와 함께 한두 번 보았었는데, 그 쇼가 별로 마음에 들지는 않았다. 누가 왜 요리에 관한 쇼를 보는 걸까?

"Mayor Hubbletree wants the show to be here?" Mr. Icky said.
Ben saw a bead of sweat roll down Mr. Freaky's face.
"The mayor wants the world to see that monsters and humans can get along," Mr. Freaky replied. "We can share food and have fun together. People Place Middle School has already chosen three cooks to compete on the show. Now it's Mr. Icky's turn to select one cook from Monster Academy."
"허블트리 시장님께서 쇼를 이곳에서 하기를 바라신다고요?" 이키 선생님이 말했다.
벤은 프리키 교장 선생님의 얼굴에서 땀방울 하나가 흘러내리는 것을 보았다.

"Awesome!" a mummy said.
A werewolf howled.
Mr. Freaky turned to Mr. Icky. "The whole world will be watching this show. Nothing can go wrong." The principal blew his noses again and then left the room.
"굉장해요!" 한 미라가 말했다.
한 늑대 인간이 울부짖었다.
프리키 교장 선생님은 이키 선생님을 돌아보았다. "전 세계가 이 쇼를 보게 될 겁니다. 어떤 것도 잘못되면 안 돼요." 교장 선생님은 다시 코를 풀고서는 교실을 떠났다.
"Okay, students," Mr. Icky said. "Let's begin today's assignment. I want everyone to make their very best batch of tarantula stew."
"This is so exciting," Winnie said to Ben as students started gathering ingredients from the pantry. "Can you imagine being on Kids' Kitchen Showdown?"
"좋아요, 학생 여러분." 이키 선생님은 말했다. "오늘의 과제를 시작합시다. 모두가 자신이 만들 수 있는 최고의 타란툴라 스튜를 한번 만들길 바랍니다."

"Yeah," Ben said with a groan. "I can imagine it as the worst thing in the world."
Winnie laughed. "I know you don't like cooking. But you're better at it than you think. And we need people to see that monsters make good food too."
Ben just rolled his eyes and reached for his apron.
"응." 벤은 끙 하는 앓는 소리를 내며 말했다. "세상 최악의 일이라고 상상할 수 있어."
위니는 웃었다. "네가 요리를 안 좋아한다는 걸 알아. 하지만 넌 네가 생각하는 것보다 요리를 잘해. 그리고 몬스터들도 맛있는 음식을 만들 수 있다는 걸 사람들이 보아야 해."
벤은 그저 눈알을 굴리며 앞치마로 손을 뻗었다.
Usually tarantula stew contained moldy peaches. But by the time Ben looked in the pantry, the peaches were all gone. He saw some rotten nectarines with worms.
"Nectarines are sort of like peaches," Ben thought. He chopped the nectarines and dumped them into his pot. He dropped the worms in too.
보통 타란툴라 스튜에는 곰팡이가 핀 복숭아가 들어갔다. 하지만 벤이 식료품 저장실을 들여다보았을 때쯤에는 복숭아가 다 사라지고 없었다. 벤은 벌레가 있는 썩은 천도 복숭아 몇 개를 보았다.
"천도 복숭아는 복숭아랑 좀 비슷하잖아." 벤은 생각했다. 벤은 천도 복숭아를 썰어서 냄비에 던져 넣었다. 벤은 벌레들도 넣었다.
Then he added some fresh tarantula legs and cinnamon. As he mixed the sauce, green vapors rose from the surface.
"Oh, boy," Ben thought. "Tarantula stew isn't supposed to look like this. I messed up!" He looked around the classroom. Everyone was busy working.

Ben looked into his pot again. "Ack!" he cried. His stew was starting to burn at the edges. He scraped the sides of his pot, mixing the burned edges into the stew. The stew took on a darker color now.
Ben sighed. "It's ruined." He turned off the burner on his stove and lifted the pot. He floated toward the garbage can.

Mr. Icky blocked his path, looking stern. "You are not going to throw that out!" The teacher took the pot from Ben and brought it back to Ben's workspace.
"I've watched you do that every day for the past two weeks," Mr. Icky said. "No more! If you throw out your food every time you mess up, you'll never improve. You must taste your mistakes!"

Mr. Icky shoved a spoon toward Ben. "Taste it!"
Ben wrinkled his nose. Then he dipped the spoon into the stew and tasted it. "I guess it's not that bad."
"Good," Mr. Icky said. The teacher lifted the spoon to his lips. Suddenly he gasped.

Mr. Icky swallowed. He looked at the stew. Then he looked at Ben. "You used rotten nectarines, didn't you? And do I taste worms?"
Ben winced. "Um, I guess so."
Mr. Icky took another taste and closed his eyes. "This reminds me of a tarantula stew I had in Paris many years ago.

"Wh-what?" Ben stammered. "That's ridiculous. I don't even know how to—"
"You have a gift, Ben," Mr. Icky said. "That's why I'm going to choose you to compete on Kids' Kitchen Showdown this Friday!"
"프랑스에 있는 몬스터 셰프들은 늘 썩은 천도 복숭아를 사용하지. 벤, 너는 그냥 요리사가 아니란다. 너는 진정한 셰프야!"
"뭐...뭐라고요?" 벤은 말을 더듬었다. "그건 말도 안 돼요. 전 요리를 할 줄도 모르는..."
"너에겐 재능이 있어, 벤." 이키 선생님은 말했다. "그렇기 때문에 이번 금요일 '키즈 주방 결전'에 참가자로 너를 선정할 거야!"
