"Good morning, class," Mr. Zimmer said."Ready for our zoo tour?"
"Yes!" called the kids.
"I hope we see cheetahs!" Rosa thought.
"여러분, 안녕하세요." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. "동물원 견학할 준비가 되었나요?"
"네!" 아이들이 외쳤어요.
"치타를 봤으면 좋겠다." 로사는 생각했어요.
"Today we will visit animals with something in common," said Mr. Zimmer. "These animals use their colors or patterns to hide. This is called camouflage."
"You mean like military clothing?" Frank asked.
"오늘 우리는 어떤 공통점을 가진 동물들을 방문할 거예요." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. "이 동물들은 숨기 위해 자기들의 색깔이나 무늬를 이용한답니다. 이것을 위장술이라고 하지요."
"군복 처럼요?" 프랭크가 물었어요.
"Yes," said Mr. Zimmer. "Camouflage clothing protects soldiers. They can blend in with their surroundings. Animals use camouflage for protection too."
"그래요." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. "위장복은 군인들을 보호해요. 군인들이 주변환경에 조화롭게 섞여들 수 있으니까요. 동물들도 보호를 위해 위장술을 사용하는 거죠."
The class walked to a hut. A sign read Reptiles and Amphibians.
"Many reptiles use camouflage to hide from their enemies. Look at this lizard," Mr. Zimmer said.
반 학생들은 한 오두막으로 걸어갔어요. 표지에 파충류와 양서류라고 써 있었어요.
"많은 파충류들이 적으로부터 숨기 위해 위장술을 사용한답니다. 이 도마뱀을 보세요." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요.
It was hard to see the lizard. Its skin was the same color as the rock.
"Mr. Zimmer?" Rosa asked. "Can camouflage help animals hunt too?"
"That's a great question, Rosa!" Mr. Zimmer said. He pointed to a bullfrog. "This bullfrog uses color to hide while it waits for food. It is the same color as grass and leaves."
그 도마뱀은 보기는 어려웠어요. 도마뱀의 가죽이 바위와 똑같은 색깔이었거든요.
"짐머 선생님?" 로사가 물었어요. "위장술은 동물들이 사냥하는 데도 도움이 되나요?"
"아주 좋은 질문이구나, 로사!" 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. 짐머 선생님이 황소개구리를 가리켰어요. "이 황소개구리도 먹이를 기다리는 동안 숨어있기 위해 색깔을 이용해요. 풀, 잎새들과 색깔이 같지요."
"It can trick its prey!" said Olivia.
"Where are we going next?" Frank asked.
"To see the owls," Mr. Zimmer said.
The class stopped in front of the Owl House.
"Where are they?" Olivia asked.
"황소개구리는 먹이감을 속일 수도 있군요!" 올리비아가 말했어요.
"다음은 어디로 가나요?" 프랭크가 물었어요.
"올빼미를 보러요." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요.
반 아이들은 올빼미의 집 앞에서 멈췄어요.
"올빼미가 어디 있어요?" 올리비아가 물었어요.
"Owls use pattern camouflage," Mr. Zimmer said. "See if you can find one."
Rosa looked closely at the tree.
"I see an owl!" she said. "Its feathers are the same pattern as tree bark!"
"올빼미는 무늬 위장술을 사용한답니다." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. "올빼미를 찾을 수 있는지 한번 보세요."
로사는 나무를 자세히 보았어요.
"올빼미가 하나 보여요." 로사가 말했어요. "올빼미의 깃털은 나무 껍질과 똑같은 무늬예요!"
"Right. The cheetahs are next," said Mr. Zimmer.
"Yes!" cried Rosa. The class walked to a large grassy area.
Rosa looked at the cheetahs' spots. "How are cheetah spots camouflage?"
"맞아요. 다음은 치타입니다." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요.
"좋아요!" 로사가 외쳤어요. 반 아이들은 넓고 풀이 자라난 곳으로 걸어갔어요.
로사는 치타의 점들을 보았어요. "치타의 점들이 어떻게 위장술이 되지요?"
"Well," said Mr. Zimmer. "The spots help cheetahs blend in with shadows in the grass. This helps cheetahs when they hunt. And it keeps cheetah cubs safe from other big cats."
"그건 말이죠." 짐머 선생님이 말했어요. "그 점들은 치타가 풀밭의 그늘과 조화롭게 섞여 보이도록 도와줘요. 이것은 치타가 사냥할 때 도움이 됩니다. 그리고 다른 큰 고양이과 동물들로부터 새끼 치타들이 안전하도록 도와주지요.
"That's cool!" said Rosa. Rosa looked at the pattern on Frank's shirt. He was leaning against a brick wall.
"Look!" Rosa said. "Frank is using camouflage too!"
"그거 참 멋지네요!" 로사는 말했어요. 로사는 프랭크의 셔츠에 있는 무늬를 보았어요. 프랭크는 벽돌담에 기대어 서 있었어요.
