Pedro zigzagged around Great-Aunt Luisa's dark front yard, holding his phone up. He was trying to get a stronger signal. Great-Aunt Luisa lived in the countryside, where there wasn't much to do. Pedro was staying with her for a whole month.
"Are you taking pictures of the moon?" a voice called.
페드로는 휴대폰을 위로 들고서 루이사 고모할머니 집의 어두운 앞마당을 지그재그로 돌아다녔다. 그는 더 강한 전파 신호를 받으려 애쓰고 있었다. 루이사 고모할머니는 시골에 살았는데, 그곳에서는 할 거리가 별로 없었다. 페드로는 고모할머니와 한 달 내내 같이 지내게 되었다.
"달 사진을 찍고 있니?" 어떤 목소리가 외쳤다.
Pedro spotted a girl in a neighbor's yard. "No. I was just trying to get a signal." He glanced upward. The nearly full moon looked much brighter than it looked at home in the city.
The girl smiled. "I'm Luna. Want to take a look through my telescope?"

"Sure." Pedro walked over to where Luna had set up her telescope. "I've never seen the moon through a telescope before."
"One day I'd like to see it up close." Luna's eyes shone. "My dream is to become an astronaut and explore the moon."
"물론이지." 페드로는 루나가 망원경을 설치한 곳으로 걸어갔다. "난 망원경으로 달을 본 적이 없어."
"난 언젠가 달을 가까이에서 보고 싶어." 루나의 눈이 반짝였다. "내 꿈은 우주 비행사가 되어서 달을 탐험하는 거야."
"You sure like the moon a lot. Is it because your name means 'moon' in Spanish?" Pedro asked teasingly.
Luna grinned. "It could be. Hey! There's a full moon tomorrow. Want to watch it with me?"
Pedro smiled. "Definitely!"
"넌 정말로 달을 많이 좋아하는구나. 네 이름이 스페인어로 ‘달’이기 때문이니?" 페드로가 놀리듯이 물었다.
루나는 씩 웃었다. "그럴 수도 있고. 아! 내일 보름달이 뜰 거야. 나랑 같이 볼래?"
페드로는 미소를 지었다. "당연히!"
The next night Pedro met Luna in her yard. "The moon is a different shape tonight," he said.
Luna giggled. "The moon doesn't really change shape, you know. The sun lights up the moon's surface. As the moon orbits around Earth, the amount of the sunlit surface we can see changes. These changes are the phases of the moon."
다음날 밤에 페드로는 루나네 마당에서 그녀를 만났다. "오늘 밤은 달이 다른 모양이네." 그는 말했다.
루나는 킥킥 웃었다. "있잖아, 달이 진짜로 모양을 바꾸는 건 아니야. 태양이 달의 표면을 비춰. 달이 지구 주위를 도는 동안, 우리에게 보이는 태양 빛이 비친 달 표면의 크기가 바뀌는 거지. 이런 변화를 달의 위상 변화라고 해."
"Aha," Pedro said. "How long does it take for the moon to orbit Earth?"
"About four weeks—one lunar month," Luna said.
"Oh. Is tonight the start of a lunar month?"
"Nope! The full moon is halfway through a lunar month," Luna explained. "The new moon is the start of a lunar month. But it's a confusing name."
"Why?" Pedro asked.
"아하." 페드로가 말했다. "달이 지구를 돌려면 얼마나 걸려?"
"약 4주, 1 태음월이야." 루나가 말했다.
"오. 오늘 밤이 태음월의 시작이야?
"아니! 보름달은 태음월의 중간이야." 루나가 설명했다. "삭(삭월 또는 신월이라고도 함)이 태음월의 시작이지. 하지만 좀 헷갈리는 이름이야."
"왜?" 페드로가 물었다.
"Because that's when the unlit surface of the moon is facing Earth. We can't see the moon then."
"That should be called a 'no moon' then!" Pedro grinned.
Luna laughed. "After a new moon, the moon waxes—or looks like it gets bigger. A few days later, it's a waxing crescent. One week after the new moon is the first-quarter moon. That's when half of the moon's surface is visible from Earth."
"왜냐하면 그것은 빛을 받지 않는 달 표면이 지구를 향하는 때거든. 그때는 우리가 달을 볼 수 없어."
"그럼 ‘없는 달(달이 없음)’이라고 불러야겠네!" 페드로가 씩 웃었다.
루나는 소리내 웃었다. "삭 이후에 달은 차기 시작하는데, 커지는 것처럼 보이게 되지. 며칠 후에는 차오르는 초승달이야. 삭 1주일 뒤가 '상현달(첫 1/4달)이야. 지구에서 달 표면의 반이 보이는 때지."
"Why is it a quarter moon if half of it is visible?"
"Because it's one quarter of the way through the lunar month," Luna said. "Finally after another week, we have a full moon, like this one. Are you enjoying it?"
Pedro put his eye to the telescope again. "It's awesome!"
"왜 절반이 보이는데 1/4달이라고 하지?"
"왜냐하면 태음월 주기의 1/4이거든." 루나가 말했다. "드디어 1주일이 더 지나면, 이 달처럼 보름달이야. 보름달을 즐기고 있니?"
페드로는 한쪽 눈을 다시 망원경에 갖다 댔다. "굉장해!"
For the next few nights, Pedro and Luna watched the moon slowly seem to disappear.
"It's waning. This is a waning gibbous," Luna explained, pointing to the football-shaped moon. "In a few days, we'll see the third-quarter moon."
다음 며칠 밤 동안 페드로와 루나는 서서히 사라지는 것처럼 보이는 달을 관찰했다.
"달이 기울고 있어. 이것은 보름달에서 (하현달로 기울어가는 불룩한 모양의) 하현망간달이야." 루나가 미식 축구공처럼 생긴 달을 가리키며 설명했다. "며칠 후에 하현달(3/4달)을 보게 될 거야."
Over a week later it was a new moon, and the sky was moonless. Soon the moon reappeared, and the waxing moon slowly grew again.
One night, under a full moon, Pedro's mom arrived to pick him up.
일주일 가량 후는 삭이었고, 하늘에는 달이 없었다. 곧 다시 달이 나타났고, 차가는 달은 또다시 서서히 커졌다.
어느 날 밤, 보름달 아래 페드로의 엄마가 페드로를 데리러 오셨다.
"Hey, Pedro!" Luna called as Pedro put his stuff into Mom's car. Luna was holding a big, long box. "I thought you might like this."
"Whoa! I can't take that," Pedro said. It was her telescope!
Luna grinned. "I'm getting a new one soon. So please take this one."
"야, 페드로!" 페드로가 엄마의 차에 자기 물건을 넣고 있었을 때 루나가 불렀다. 루나는 크고 긴 상자를 들고 있었다. "네가 이것을 좋아할 것 같아서."
"우와! 받을 수 없어." 페드로가 말했다. 그것은 루나의 망원경이였다!
루나는 씩 웃었다. "난 곧 새 걸 갖게 될 거야. 그러니 이걸 받아줘."
"Thanks!" Pedro said. "That's really generous, Luna. I'm sorry that I don't have anything for you though."
"That's okay." Luna smiled. "Just promise me we can moon-gaze together when I visit the city."
Pedro smiled back. "Deal!"
"고마워!" 페드로가 말했다. "정말 후한 선물이야, 루나. 그런데 미안하게도 난 네게 줄 것이 없어."
"괜찮아." 루나가 미소를 지었다. "내가 도시에 가면, 함께 달을 바라보겠다고만 약속해."
