Damon followed Ivan and Kelsey off the school bus and looked around nervously. The field was crowded with people in historical costumes. There were women in long dresses and bonnets, and men in straw hats and leather boots.
데이먼은 이반과 켈시를 따라 스쿨버스에서 내려 긴장한 채로 주변을 둘러보았다. 행사장에는 역사적인 의상을 입은 사람들로 가득했다. 그곳에는 긴 드레스를 입고 보닛을 쓴 여자들과 밀짚 모자에 가죽 장화를 신은 남자들이 있었다.
"Welcome to Pioneer Days!" Mrs. Manning, the teacher, said. "In the 1800s around 400,000 people left their homes in the East. They wanted to settle on open land and find new opportunities. So these pioneers traveled across America in covered wagons to settle in the West."
"개척자 시대에 오신걸 환영해요!" 매닝 선생님이 말했다. "1800년대에 대략 40만 명의 사람들은 동부에 있는 그들의 고향을 떠나왔어요. 그들은 개방된 땅에 정착하여 새로운 기회를 찾기를 원했죠. 그래서 이 개척자들은 서부에 정착하기 위해 덮개가 있는 마차로 미국 땅을 가로질러 이동했어요."
"What kind of person wants to dress up like a pioneer?" Kelsey said.
"Yeah," Damon mumbled. He spotted his mother standing by an open fire, wearing her homemade outfit. Before his friends could notice her, Damon pointed wildly across the field. "Look at the oxen!"

"Wow!" Ivan stared at the huge animals. "Why are cows pulling a wagon? Why not just use horses?"
"They're oxen, not cows, Ivan!" Mrs. Manning said. "Pioneers used oxen instead of horses to pull wagons because they're strong, tough—"
"우와!" 이반이 그 거대한 동물들을 쳐다보았다. "왜 젖소가 마차를 끌고 있지? 왜 그냥 말을 쓰지 않는 거야?"
"이반, 저건 젖소가 아니고 황소예요!" 매닝 선생님이 말했다. "개척자들은 말 대신 황소를 써서 마차를 끌게 했어요, 왜냐하면 황소는 힘이 세고, 강인하고-"
"And slow!" Kelsey giggled as the oxen trudged past.
"See the cream pail on the side of the wagon?" Mrs. Manning said. "The wagon's motion churns the cream into butter."
Damon noticed Mom waving at him, but he pretended not to see. "Let's go learn about the Native Americans!" he said hurriedly.

Mrs. Manning checked the time. "It's lunchtime now. We're having an authentic pioneer lunch!"
"Shouldn't we see the cow-milking station first?" Damon asked hopefully.
"After lunch," Mrs. Manning said firmly.
"Damon!" Kelsey said suddenly. "Isn't that your mom?"
Damon wished he could disappear.
매닝 선생님은 시간을 확인했다. "이제 점심시간이에요. 우리는 진정한 개척자 시대 점심을 먹을 거예요!"
"그보다 먼저 우유 짜는 곳을 봐야 하지 않을까요?" 데이먼은 간절히 물어봤다.
"점심 식사 후에." 매닝 선생님은 단호하게 대답했다.
"데이먼!" 켈시가 갑자기 말했다. "저기 너희 엄마 아니야?"
데이먼은 자기가 사라졌으면 하고 바랐다.
"Hello, everyone!" Mom smiled cheerfully as she handed out plates of food. "Everything you're eating here was cooked over an open fire. Most pioneers didn't pack their heavy stoves in the wagons. So they cooked in iron pots called Dutch ovens."
"여러분 안녕하세요!" 엄마는 밝게 웃으며 음식이 담긴 접시를 나눠 주었다. "여러분들이 여기서 먹는 모든 음식은 모닥불 위에서 조리되었어요. 개척자들 대부분은 무거운 스토브를 마차에 싣지 않았어요. 그래서 그들은 '더치 오븐'이라는 무쇠로 된 두툼한 냄비에 요리했어요."
She gestured at the pots by the fire. "They baked bread and biscuits in these, and cooked beans and stews. They had to pack enough flour, beans, rice, cornmeal, and bacon for six months of hard traveling. Sometimes they had to clean the bacon before they ate it, to remove mold or bugs."
그녀는 불 옆에 있는 냄비들을 가리켰다. "개척자들은 빵과 비스킷을 여기에 굽고, 콩과 스튜를 요리했어요. 그들은 6개월가량의 힘든 여행을 위해 충분한 양의 밀가루와 콩, 쌀과 옥수숫가루, 그리고 베이컨을 챙겨야 했어요. 어떤 때에는 베이컨을 먹기 전에 그 위에 있는 곰팡이와 벌레를 제거해야 하기도 했어요."
"Moldy bacon?" Kelsey said.
"Bugs? Yuck!" Ivan pretended to throw up.
"Moldy bacon was the least of their worries!" Damon suddenly heard himself say. "The pioneers had to survive storms and diseases. They turned their wagons into boats to float across flooded rivers. Sometimes they even lowered them down cliffs on ropes.
"곰팡이 핀 베이컨이라고요?" 켈시가 말했다.
"벌레요? 우 왝!" 이반은 토하는 시늉을 했다.
"곰팡이 핀 베이컨은 그들의 걱정거리 중에 제일 작은 것이었어!" 데이먼은 갑자기 자신이 말을 하고 있는 걸 깨달았다. "개척자들은 폭풍과 질병에서 살아남아야 했어. 그들은 마차를 배로 만들어서 홍수가 난 강을 건너야 했지. 때로는 밧줄로 마차를 절벽 아래로 내리기도 했어."
"When they finally settled, they could only use what they had brought with them! They had to build their own houses, grow their own food, and make their own clothes. Nothing was easy for them!"
His friends blinked at him in surprise. Damon flushed. Now they were really going to tease him!
"마침내 정착했을 때, 그들이 사용할 수 있었던 것은 그들이 가지고 온 것들밖에 없었어. 집을 직접 지어야 했고, 식재료도 재배해야 했고, 옷도 직접 만들어야 했어. 그들에게는 어떤 것도 쉽지 않았다고!"
친구들은 그를 보며 놀라 눈을 깜박거렸다. 데이먼의 얼굴이 빨개졌다. 이제 그들은 진짜로 그를 놀릴 것이다!
"Wow!" Kelsey said finally. "I guess the pioneers were pretty tough."
"And smart," Ivan said. "How do you know all this, Damon?"
"My mom brings me to Pioneer Days every year," Damon admitted. "I guess I've learned a few things!"
"우와!" 켈시가 마침내 말했다. "개척자들은 정말 강인했나 봐."
"그리고 똑똑하고." 이반이 말했다. "데이먼, 넌 이걸 어떻게 다 아니?"
"우리 엄마가 매년 나를 개척자의 날 행사에 데리고 오시거든." 데이먼이 인정했다. "아마 내가 몇 가지를 배우긴 했나 봐!"
"These biscuits are delicious!" Kelsey said with her mouth full. "Can you show me how to make them?"
Maybe seeing Mom in her pioneer outfit was not so bad after all. "Sure." Damon grinned. "But only if you dress up like a pioneer!"
"이 비스킷 맛있다!" 켈시가 입에 가득 채운 채로 말했다. "어떻게 만드는지 보여주실 수 있어요?"
어쩌면 엄마가 개척자 시대 의상을 입고 계신 걸 보는 것은 그다지 나쁘지 않았을지도 모른다. "당연하지." 데이먼이 웃었다. "하지만 네가 개척자처럼 옷을 입을 때만!"
