FAYE MOSS: Welcome to another episode of Superstars in History, the only talk show that features history's biggest stars. I'm Faye Moss. Today's guest is a ruler from the ancient world. Nearly everybody knows her name, but few people know her secrets. Maybe I can get her to reveal some of them! Straight from history, here is the last queen of Egypt, Cleopatra!
CLEOPATRA: Thank you, Faye, dear. It's lovely to be here.

FAYE MOSS: We're so thrilled to have you, Your Majesty. You were born in 69 BC, an Egyptian princess in the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled Egypt for 275 years. But your family was actually Greek, not Egyptian, right?
CLEOPATRA: It's true that my ancestors were Greek, but in my heart, I was Egyptian. I spoke the language—in fact, I was the only ruler in my family who ever did. I also dressed as an Egyptian and took part in Egyptian rituals and customs. I felt great pride in my kingdom, even though we were going through hard times.

FAYE MOSS: What was happening?
CLEOPATRA: The people were unhappy, and understandably so. There were food shortages, and the economy was in trouble. My father owed a massive debt to Rome, and Rome itself was an ongoing and serious problem. Rome had been expanding its power throughout the region, and under previous pharaohs, its influence in Egypt had grown, threatening our independence.

FAYE MOSS: Your relationship with Rome was complicated, wasn't it? When you were only 18 years old, your father died, and you became queen, ruling alongside your younger brother Ptolemy XIII. Rome helped you solve an early problem.
CLEOPATRA: Yes, my father had left his kingdom to be ruled jointly by us, but Ptolemy, who was only ten by the way, refused to acknowledge me as co-ruler. Siblings! I was forced to flee the palace to save my life.
Meanwhile, Julius Caesar, who was then the ruler of Rome, was staying at the royal palace in Alexandria. I knew that if I could get Caesar's support, I could reclaim my place. So I figured out a way to sneak into the palace to talk to him.

한편, 그 당시 로마의 통치자였던 율리우스 카이사르(영어명: 줄리어스 시저)는 알렉산드리아의 궁궐에서 지내고 있었어요. 내가 카이사르의 지원을 받는다면, 내 지위를 되찾을 수 있을 거라는 것을 나는 알았죠. 그래서 나는 궁궐에 몰래 들어가서 그와 대화할 방법을 찾아냈답니다.
FAYE MOSS: There's a story that you wrapped yourself in a carpet that was gifted to Caesar. When the carpet was unrolled, you popped out! Or maybe it was some type of sack?
CLEOPATRA: They still tell that story? How I managed to arrange an audience with Caesar is my little secret. In any case, it worked, and Caesar reinstated me as co-ruler. This didn't deter Ptolemy from wanting to get rid of me. Eventually he joined forces with my younger sister, Arsinoe, and attempted to depose me once again, but things didn't turn out well for him. He drowned in the Nile after his army was defeated by mine and Caesar's. From then I had to co-rule with my youngest brother, but at least Caesar secured my position.
FAYE MOSS: It sounds like he helped you a lot.

CLEOPATRA: We helped each other and worked well together. Rome needed Egyptian grain and depended on our economy to support its expanding territory. And I persuaded Caesar to return some Egyptian lands that Rome had taken. This allowed me to reduce taxes and improve our economy. Caesar also provided Roman legions to protect Alexandria, freeing up my money and troops for other uses.
You may have heard that we had a personal relationship too; we had a son named Caesarion—the heir to Egypt, and, I had hoped, to Rome as well.
FAYE MOSS: Why don't we talk a little bit more about your reign? What were your goals as ruler?
클레오파트라: 우리는 서로를 도왔고 함께 일을 잘했어요. 로마는 이집트의 곡물이 필요했고, 확장되는 영토를 지원하기 위해 우리의 경제에 의존했죠. 그리고 나는 카이사르를 설득해 로마가 빼앗은 이집트의 땅을 돌려주게 했어요. 그로 인해 나는 세금을 내리고 우리의 경제를 부흥시킬 수 있었어요. 카이사르는 또한 알렉산드리아를 보호하기 위해 로마의 부대를 지원했고, 나의 돈과 군대를 다른 용도로 자유롭게 사용할 수 있게 해주었죠.

CLEOPATRA: More than anything, I wanted to bring back Egypt's glory and independence. During my reign I restored the kingdom to the size and grandeur it had known a thousand years before, and Egypt became a world power once again.
But I also wanted to be loved by my subjects. So I ended taxation on starving farmers and released grain from the royal granaries so my people could eat. I brought scholars to Alexandria to study and work in our great library. And I allowed Jews to settle in Egypt and built a synagogue in Alexandria. As my kingdom was made up of people who spoke many languages, I learned further languages so that I could communicate with all my people. The kingdom prospered, and my people worshipped me.

FAYE MOSS: How did Rome react to this?
CLEOPATRA: Relations with Rome were fine under Caesar, but that ended when Caesar was murdered in 44 BC. Caesar never did name Caesarion as his heir, but I made him my co-ruler after . . . Well, let's just say that I took steps to get rid of my brother. You might think it harsh, but it was the way my family did things.
FAYE MOSS: Yikes! I don't want to get on your bad side, so let's move on. What happened to Rome after Caesar's death?

CLEOPATRA: Rome was divided. Caesar's nephew, commonly called Octavian, ruled the western half. Mark Antony, who ruled the eastern half, called me to his side to help him. Antony was a wise leader and skilled politician.
FAYE MOSS: And you had a relationship with him as well.
CLEOPATRA: We had three children together, but more importantly for this discussion, we became joint rulers of our two very powerful kingdoms. Unfortunately Octavian wanted to be rid of us. He hated—and feared—me! My son Caesarion had a strong claim to Octavian's throne, and both Antony and I declared him heir. Octavian did not feel safe as long as we lived. So Octavian declared war on me and sent his troops after us. His hatred was personal as well. Antony was married to Octavian's sister before he left her to support me.
클레오 파트라: 로마는 분열되었어요. 흔히 옥타비아누스라고 불리던 카이사르의 조카는 서쪽 절반을 지배했어요. 동쪽 절반을 지배하던 마르쿠스 안토니우스(영어명: 마크 안토니)는 그를 돕도록 나를 곁으로 불렀죠. 안토니우스는 현명한 지도자였고 노련한 정치가였어요.

FAYE MOSS: So what did you do?
CLEOPATRA: We fled and ordered ships and soldiers to gather at Actium in Greece to defend our kingdoms. It wasn't long before Octavian's fleet arrived . . .
FAYE MOSS: I can finish the story, Your Majesty. We're so honored that you joined us today. We'll let you rejoin history now.
CLEOPATRA: Thank you, Faye.

FAYE MOSS: Cleopatra and Mark Antony's forces were defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Antony, after receiving false word that Cleopatra was dead, ended his own life in despair.
Octavian was determined to bring Cleopatra to Rome in chains. To avoid this fate, Cleopatra took her own life, ending her 22-year reign and briefly leaving Caesarion as pharaoh. Octavian, now Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, swiftly removed Caesarion and made Egypt part of the Roman Empire.
Cleopatra's gift for governing and her relationships with two powerful Roman politicians made her an unforgettable pharaoh. Her story, with its tragic ending, has inspired many retellings over the centuries.
