There hadn't been a celebration at Dorincourt Castle for years. But now the earl wanted to throw a grand dinner party to show off his grandson. He had no idea that bad news would arrive that night.
The earl invited all the lords and ladies he knew. He even invited his sister, Constantia, to visit. They'd quarreled 35 years ago, and he hadn't seen her since.

Constantia arrived a few days before the party. The first thing she wanted was to meet Cedric.
"I've heard the boy has worked miracles on you, John," she teased her brother. "Some of the tenants have even stopped calling you 'the wicked Earl of Dorincourt.'"
The earl scowled. "I don't know about that." His face brightened when Cedric entered the library. "Come here, Cedric!"

The boy ran to his grandfather, who held out a hand to a lady with white curls and friendly eyes. "I'd like you to meet your great-aunt, Lady Constantia."
Cedric shook her hand. "I'm pleased to meet you, Great-Aunt Constantia."
Constantia smiled warmly at him. "I was always fond of your papa, and you remind me so much of him."

"I hope so too." Constantia raised her eyebrows at the earl, who looked away.
"The workmen are putting a new roof on a cottage," Cedric said to his grandfather. "Do you want to ride over to watch?"

"Another time," the earl said. "Wilkins will take you riding today."
After Cedric left the library, the earl and his sister sat down for tea.
"You couldn't have found a better heir." Constantia poured the tea. "You must be pleased."
"He's a fine fellow, and we're great friends." The earl started to smile. "I've actually become quite fond of him."
"What does his mother think of you?"

The earl's smile faded into another scowl. "I haven't asked her."
"I must be frank with you, John, and say that I don't approve of what you've done. It's wrong to separate the child from his mother." Constantia put down her teacup. "I intend to call on her tomorrow. So if you're going to quarrel with me, you'd better do it now."
The earl had forgotten that his sister never hesitated to say what she thought.

"From what I've heard," Constantia said, "she has been a wonderful influence on her son. I've also heard that your tenants adore her."
"They adore him." The earl corrected his sister. "You can go see her, if you like. Just don't try to make me visit her!"
The next day Constantia returned from visiting Mrs. Errol.
"내가 들은 바로는," 콘스탄티아가 말했다. "그녀가 아들에게 훌륭한 영향을 주었다고 하더군요. 또 오라버니의 소작인들도 그녀를 아주 좋아한다고 들었고요."

"She's a perfectly lovely person," Constantia told her brother. "You should thank her for making Cedric the fine boy that he is."
The earl harrumphed at Constantia. But she noticed he didn't say anything bad about Mrs. Errol.
The dinner party was that night. Cedric put on his best black velvet suit. Before he went downstairs to the ballroom, he stuffed Dick's handkerchief into a pocket.

"I wish Dick could see me wearing this to a party," he said to himself.
At the party all the guests wanted to talk to Cedric. They smiled when he showed them Dick's red-and-purple gift. They were charmed by his kindness toward the earl.
Constantia watched as Cedric followed his grandfather around the ballroom. "John's own sons never paid him this much attention," she thought. "No wonder John enjoys his company."

Soon a footman approached the earl. "Should I announce that dinner is served, my lord?"
The earl looked at his watch and frowned. "Mr. Havisham isn't here yet. Has there been any word from him?"
"No, my lord."
"This is most unusual. Mr. Havisham is always on time." The earl checked his watch again. "We'll wait a few more minutes. Let me know the moment his carriage arrives."
곧 하인 한 명이 백작에게 다가왔다. "저녁 식사가 준비되었다고 알릴까요, 백작님?"

The footman turned and spotted the tall lawyer entering the room. "Mr. Havisham has arrived, my lord."
"Yes, I can see that," the earl said impatiently.
"Good evening, Mr. . . .," Cedric started to call out.
"Havisham, where have you been? Why are you late?" the earl demanded. "What's wrong?"
Mr. Havisham, who was never agitated, was pale and obviously upset.

Before the lawyer could reply, a second footman arrived at the earl's side. "Cook says dinner will be ruined if it's not served immediately."
"Then announce that dinner is served!" the earl snarled. "Havisham! Tell me what's wrong at once!"
Mr. Havisham glanced around uneasily at the guests. "Not here. You'll want to hear the news in private."
