Once there was a girl named Rapunzel.
Her family lived on a small farm.
Rapunzel loved to work in the garden.
She also loved to sing.

On this day Rapunzel turned ten.
Her birthday was usually a happy day.
But today Mama and Papa were acting strange.
"Why is Papa looking at the road?" Rapunzel thought.
이날 라푼젤은 열 살이 되었답니다.
그녀의 생일은 대체로 즐거운 날이었어요.
하지만 오늘 엄마와 아빠는 이상하게 행동하고 있지 뭐예요.
'아빠는 왜 길을 쳐다보고 계실까?' 라푼젤이 생각했어요.
"Someone is coming!" Papa cried.
"Rapunzel! Hide!"
"What? Why?" Rapunzel was confused.
"Quick, Rapunzel! Now!" Mama said.
"누군가가 오고 있어!" 아빠가 소리쳤어요.
"라푼젤! 숨어라!"
"뭐라고요? 왜요?" 라푼젤은 어리둥절했어요.
"빨리, 라푼젤! 당장!" 엄마가 말했어요.
Rapunzel crawled under a bush.
"Why do I have to hide?" she thought.
"This is so strange!"
라푼젤은 관목 아래로 기어 들어갔어요.
'내가 왜 숨어야 하지?' 그녀는 생각했어요.
'이거 정말 이상하네!'
Suddenly a bird flew into the bush.
Rapunzel smiled. "Would you like some seeds, bird?"
The bird hopped onto Rapunzel's hand.
It ate the seeds.
갑자기 새 한 마리가 덤불 속으로 날아들었어요.
라푼젤은 미소 지었어요. "새야, 씨앗을 좀 줄까?"
새는 라푼젤의 손 위로 폴짝 뛰어올랐어요.
그것은 씨앗을 먹었어요.
Mama was peering over the fence.
"Whew!" she said. "It was just a farmer.
He is going to the market."
엄마는 울타리 너머를 유심히 살피고 있었어요.
"휴!" 그녀는 말했어요. "그냥 농부였어.
그는 시장에 가고 있는 거야."
Rapunzel popped up.
"I wish we could go to the market.
It would be fun to go to the city."
Papa shook his head. "The city is not safe."
라푼젤이 벌떡 일어섰어요.
"우리도 시장에 가면 좋겠어요.
도시에 가면 재미있을 거예요."
아빠는 고개를 저었어요. "도시는 안전하지 않단다."
Rapunzel frowned. "We never go anywhere.
We never meet anyone new."
라푼젤은 얼굴을 찡그렸어요. "우린 아무 데도 가지 않잖아요.
새로운 사람을 만나는 일도 전혀 없고요."
Rapunzel looked from her father to her mother.
"What are you scared of?"
Papa did not answer.
라푼젤은 아빠와 엄마를 차례로 쳐다봤어요.
"무엇을 겁내시는 거예요?"
아빠는 대답하지 않았어요.
Mama bit her lip. "She is ten years old today.
We must tell her."
"Tell me what?" Rapunzel asked.
Papa sighed. "Come with me."
엄마가 입술을 깨물었어요. "저 아이는 오늘 열 살이 되었어요.
우린 쟤한테 말해 줘야 해요."
"저에게 뭘 말해 줘요?" 라푼젤이 물었어요.
아빠는 한숨을 내쉬었어요. "나랑 같이 가자꾸나."
Papa led Rapunzel to a small hill.
He bent down and grabbed a rock.
Rapunzel gasped.
"That's not a rock—it's a door handle!"
아빠는 라푼젤을 작은 언덕으로 이끌었어요.
그는 허리를 숙여 어떤 돌을 움켜잡았어요.
라푼젤이 헉 하고 놀랐어요.
"그건 돌이 아니고, 문 손잡이네요!"
Papa opened the door.
Inside was a small room.
"I built this for you, Rapunzel," Papa said.
"You must hide here when the witch comes!"
아빠가 문을 열었어요.
안쪽에 작은 방이 있었어요.
"라푼젤, 내가 널 위해 이걸 지었단다." 아빠가 말했어요.
"마녀가 오면 넌 꼭 여기 숨어야 해!"
