Early the next morning, the gang left the hideout in the woods. About noon they reached a village, where they separated because everyone had their own criminal activities to pursue. Ruffler put Frank in charge of Edward.
Frank pulled Edward by the arm. "Come on, we've got work to do."
"You have no right to touch the king." Edward tried to shake off Frank's hand, but the young man held on tightly.

They walked up and down the streets, occasionally stopping to look in shop windows.
"What are you looking for?" Edward said.
"Something to steal."
"Something to steal? Oh no, I'm not helping you steal. It's wrong to—"

"Don't worry, crybaby," Frank snapped. "There's nothing worth stealing in this place. So we're going to beg."
"We?" Edward was outraged at the suggestion that a king would beg. "You can beg, but I won't do it."
Frank eyed Edward with surprise. "Since when have you reformed?"
"What are you talking about?" Edward asked.

프랭크는 깜짝 놀라서 에드워드를 주의 깊게 보았다. "너 언제부터 마음을 고쳐먹은 거야?"
"무슨 소리를 하는 거냐?" 에드워드가 물었다.
"According to your father, you've spent your whole life begging on the streets of the city."
"John Canty is not my father, and I've never begged a day in my life."
"Listen to me." Frank was angry now. "Since you're too good to beg or steal, you'll play decoy while I beg. Got it?"
Edward was about to argue again when Frank hushed him.

에드워드가 다시 반박을 하려는 참에 프랭크가 그에게 조용히 하라고 시켰다.
"Here comes a man with a kind face. First I'll pretend I'm sick, and then you call out to him."
Edward gritted his teeth. "There's no way I'm taking part in your scheme."
Frank pinched Edward's arm and snarled in his ear. "You say, 'Oh, kind sir, my poor brother is afflicted with a terrible illness, and we don't know anyone here. Please help us with just one penny from your great riches.' Understand?"

Before Edward could refuse, Frank dropped to the ground in front of the man.
"Oh dear, oh dear!" the stranger cried. "What's wrong? Let me help you!"
"I don't want to trouble you with my illness," Frank said. "My brother will tell you that I'm often sick and racked with pain. All I ask is a penny for food, and then leave me to my misery."
"A penny? I'll give you three pennies!" The man fumbled in his pocket and handed the coins to Frank. "Now come here, lad, and help me carry your brother to the house—"
에드워드가 미처 거절을 하기도 전에, 프랭크는 그 남자 앞에서 바닥에 쓰러졌다.
"아 이런, 이런!" 그 행인이 소리쳤다. "무슨 일이냐? 내가 도와주마!"
"제 병으로 나리를 귀찮게 해드리고 싶지 않습니다." 프랭크가 말했다. "제 동생은 제가 자주 아프고 통증으로 괴로워한다고 말할 겁니다. 제가 부탁드리는 건 먹을 것을 살 1페니뿐이니, 이 불쌍한 놈은 그냥 두고 가셔도 됩니다."
"1페니라고? 3페니를 주마!" 그 남자는 주머니를 뒤져서 동전들을 프랭크에게 건넸다. "이제 이리 오거라, 얘야, 나를 도와서 네 형을 집으로 데려가...."
"I'm not his brother," Edward interrupted.
"Oh, he denies knowing his own brother." Frank groaned as the man bent over him. "We are both sick. While my illness destroys my body, his sickness eats away his mind."
The stranger looked suspiciously from Edward to Frank and back again. "If he's not your brother," the man said to Edward, "then who is he?"
"A beggar and a thief. While you've been giving him pennies, he's been picking your pocket!"
"난 저 사람의 동생이 아니오." 에드워드가 말을 가로막았다.
"아, 저 녀석이 자기 형제를 알지 못한다고 부인하네요." 프랭크가 괴로운 듯 신음했고 그 남자는 그에게 허리를 굽혔다. "저희는 둘 다 아프답니다. 제 병이 저의 몸을 망가뜨릴 때, 저 녀석의 병은 쟤의 정신을 갉아먹지요."
행인은 에드워드와 프랭크를 의심스러운 듯 번갈아 쳐다보았다. "저 사람이 너의 형이 아니라면," 남자가 에드워드에게 말했다. "그럼 누구지?"
"거지이자 좀도둑이오. 당신이 그에게 동전을 줄 때 그는 당신의 호주머니를 소매치기했소!"
The man's eyes widened in surprise, and he patted his empty pocket. Frank jumped up and ran away with the man in hot pursuit. Without wasting a second, Edward fled in the opposite direction.
"Expecting the king to beg and steal. Ridiculous!" Edward kept looking back for Frank as he hurried along.
However, as the hours passed and he grew hungry, Edward realized that he'd have to beg for food. He knocked on a farmhouse door, but the owner took one look at his ragged clothes and shooed him away.
남자의 눈이 깜짝 놀라 휘둥그레졌고, 그는 자기의 텅 빈 호주머니를 더듬어 보았다. 프랭크가 벌떡 일어나서 도망쳤고 남자는 황급히 그 뒤를 쫓았다. 잠시의 망설임도 없이 에드워드는 반대 방향으로 달아났다.
"왕이 구걸하고 도둑질하길 바라다니. 말도 안 돼!" 에드워드는 서둘러 달아나며 계속 프랭크를 돌아봤다.
하지만 시간이 지나면서 에드워드는 배가 고파졌고 자기가 먹을 것을 구걸해야 한다는 것을 깨달았다. 그가 한 농가의 문을 두드렸지만, 주인은 그의 누더기 옷을 힐끔 보더니 쉬이 하며 그를 쫓아내 버렸다.
"I can manage on my own! I don't need anybody's charity!" Edward shouted as he walked down the farmhouse lane. A cow raised its head and stared after him.
Night arrived with a damp chill. Edward was tired, but every time he sat down to rest, the cold penetrated his bones.
"I have to find somewhere warm to spend the night." He got up and started walking again.
"난 혼자 해낼 수 있어! 나는 누구의 자비도 필요하지 않아!" 에드워드는 농가의 길을 따라 걸어가며 소리쳤다. 소 한 마리가 고개를 들어 그가 가는 뒷모습을 빤히 쳐다보았다.
축축한 추위와 함께 밤이 왔다. 에드워드는 피곤했지만, 그가 쉬려고 앉을 때마다 추위가 뼛속을 파고들었다.
"밤을 보낼 따뜻한 어딘가를 찾아야 해." 그는 일어서서 다시 걷기 시작했다.
At last he came to a barn, where a farmworker was finishing some chores. Edward waited outside, near the open door. By the light of the man's lantern, he spotted an empty stall and some horse blankets.
"There's my bed!" Edward thought.
As soon as the man left, Edward crept into the dark barn. He put one blanket on the ground, lay down, and pulled the other blanket over him.
마침내 한 농장 일꾼이 작업을 마무리하고 있는 헛간에 왔다. 에드워드는 열린 문 근처의 밖에서 기다렸다. 그 남자의 등불 빛에 그는 빈 마구간과 말의 담요를 발견했다.
'저게 내 침대로군!' 에드워드는 생각했다.
그 남자가 떠나자마자 에드워드는 어두운 헛간으로 몰래 들어갔다. 그는 담요 한 장을 바닥에 깔고 누운 후에 다른 담요를 덮었다.
"Ugh! These blankets stink of horse, but they'll have to do."
Edward was almost asleep when something touched his face. He sat up in alarm.
"Who's there?" he whispered.
No one replied. Edward lay down with his eyes wide open even though it was too dark to see.
The thing reached out and touched him again!
"으악! 이 담요들에서 고약한 말 냄새가 나네, 하지만 그거면 되지 뭐."
에드워드가 잠에 들려 할 때 무언가가 그의 얼굴을 만졌다. 그는 깜짝 놀라서 일어나 앉았다.
