Roscoe and Cleo ducked behind an old, empty barrel. They peeked out. The street was still empty.
Now this was mighty confusing to the sheriff and his deputy.
"Who's there?" Roscoe shouted. There was no answer.
"I don't see anyone," Cleo said. "So who fired that—?"
로스코와 클레오는 비어 있는 낡은 드럼통 뒤에 숨었다. 그들은 살짝 내다보았다. 거리는 여전히 텅 비어 있었다.

Bang! Bang! Roscoe and Cleo ducked back down. They peeked out again. The saloon doors were swinging back and forth.
Cleo sighed. "It's only the wind blowing those doors."
Roscoe shook his head. "There's no wind."
땅! 땅! 로스코와 클레오는 다시 몸을 숙였다. 그들은 다시 살짝 내다보았다. 술집의 문이 앞뒤로 흔들리고 있었다.
클레오는 한숨 쉬었다. "그냥 바람에 저 문들이 흔들리는 거야."
로스코가 고개를 저었다. "바람은 안 불어."
They stood up. Then they heard footsteps. Roscoe looked around. But the town was still as empty as that barrel.
He looked down and gasped. Boot prints were forming in the dirt!
A shiver ran down Roscoe's spine. "Maybe there are ghosts in Jerome!" he thought.
그들은 일어섰다. 그때 그들은 발소리를 들었다. 로스코가 주위를 둘러봤다. 하지만 소도시는 여전히 그 드럼통처럼 텅 비어 있었다.

The prints faded away. Roscoe scratched his head. Was he imagining things?
A lively song began playing on a piano. The sound came from inside the saloon.
"Someone's in there," Cleo said.
Roscoe puffed out his chest. "Let's go."
자국이 서서히 사라졌다. 로스코는 머리를 긁적였다. 그가 헛것을 본 걸까?
피아노에서 활기찬 음악이 연주되기 시작했다. 그 소리는 술집 안에서 나고 있었다.
"저 안에 누군가가 있어." 클레오가 말했다.
로스코는 가슴을 쭉 폈다. "가 보자고."
He and Cleo pulled out their slingshots. They walked slowly to the saloon and went inside.
Dust covered the room. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling. A few barstools lay broken on the floor. In the corner a piano was playing all by itself.
그와 클레오는 새총을 꺼냈다. 그들은 술집으로 천천히 걸어가서 안으로 들어섰다.
실내는 먼지로 뒤덮여 있었다. 천장에는 거미줄이 쳐져 있었다. 술집용 높고 둥근 의자 몇 개가 부서진 채로 바닥에 놓여 있었다. 한쪽 구석에서 피아노가 저절로 연주되고 있었다.
Cleo's eyes went wide. "How is that . . . ?"
Roscoe smiled. "It's a player piano! I've seen these before." He slid open two small doors on the piano. "They play music by themselves from these rolls."
"But why is it playing now?" Cleo asked. "The town is empty."
클레오의 눈이 휘둥그레졌다. "어떻게 저게…?"
로스코가 미소 지었다. "저건 자동 피아노야! 예전에 이런 거 본 적 있어." 그는 피아노의 두 개의 작은 문을 슬며시 열었다. "이 (피아노)롤로 스스로 음악을 연주하는 거지."
"그런데 왜 지금 연주하는 걸까?" 클레오가 물었다. "도시는 텅 비어 있는데."
"Oh yeah." The smile disappeared from Roscoe's face. "I don't—"
Just then the music stopped. The doors slammed shut. Bang!
"Ahh!" Roscoe jumped.
Cleo started to run. "Let's get out of this ghost town!"
"그러게." 로스코의 얼굴에서 미소가 사라졌다. "난…."
바로 그때 음악이 멈췄다. 문들이 탁 닫혔다. 쾅!
"아악!" 로스코가 펄쩍 뛰었다.
클레오는 달리기 시작했다. "이 유령 도시에서 빠져나가자!"
"Hold on," Roscoe said. "We can't run away. You're a deputy, Cleo. And we're here to find Annie."
Cleo stopped and sighed. "You're right."
"Come on," Roscoe said. "As soon as we find her, we can get out of Jerome."
"잠깐." 로스코가 말했다. "우린 도망갈 수 없어. 너는 부보안관이야, 클레오. 그리고 우리는 애니를 찾으러 왔잖아."
클레오가 멈춰서 한숨을 쉬었다. "맞아."
"자 어서." 로스코가 말했다. "그녀를 찾으면 우린 곧바로 제롬을 떠날 수 있어."
They went outside. The street was still empty. Above them dark clouds were forming. A tumbleweed rolled by.
Roscoe lifted his nose and sniffed. "A storm is coming."
그들은 밖으로 갔다. 거리는 여전히 텅 비어 있었다. 그들의 머리 위에 어두운 구름이 생겨나고 있었다. 회전초가 굴러갔다.
로스코는 코를 들고 킁킁거렸다. "폭풍이 오고 있어."
Down the street the horses bucked and whinnied. Cleo looked around. Suddenly she froze, her eyes filled with fear.
"What's wrong?" Roscoe looked over and gasped.
An outlaw was walking toward them!
길 저편에서 말들이 날뛰며 울부짖었다. 클레오는 주위를 둘러봤다. 갑자기 그녀는 공포에 질린 표정으로 얼어붙었다.
