Chapter 19: Lily’s Secret

It was nightfall when Jessie offered to take me, Kate, and Lily to our rooms. It wasn’t exactly a room though. It was a toy house. The house was comically large with many rooms. Kate got to use a room that had pink bunnies all around it, while Lily got a room that was painted purple with daisies. Mine was painted sunshine yellow, which made everything look bright. There were tiny suns drawn everywhere, along with Apollon, the god of the sun.

“Lovely,” I said when I entered the room. “Thanks.”

“No need to thank me,” Jessie said. “Dan told me to take you to this room. Anyway, goodnight!” Jessie closed the door, leaving me alone.

I lied in bed, thinking about Lily’s diary, to the dream. Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not... What does that mean? I must have read it wrong. Lily is our family.

I kept rolling about in my bed before I fell. “Ouch!” I said, rubbing my shell. I was about to stand up and lie in bed again when I stopped. “I can’t get Lily’s diary out of my mind!” I growled. “I’m going to find that diary and see that I misread it!” I crawled out of my room to where Lily was sleeping.

“Aha!” I said. I spotted the diary in Lily’s bag. I quietly pulled it out, tiptoed out into the corridors, and my room.

I flipped the diary open and read the first page.

2021. 10. 5

Hello, Diary. My name is Lily. I hope Mother won’t scold me for using you as a diary without permission. I always longed for a diary. So I begged my mother for one, but it ignored me. You must be relieved to get out of that dusty shelf of books. Neither Mother nor Father used you. So you got dirtier every day. I noticed you today while eating breakfast, and I was so sorry for you. So I helped you escape from the shelf and into a new life as a diary of mine. Shh! Wait! Here comes Father!

I was bewildered after reading this. Mother ignoring Lily? A dusty shelf of books? Plus, the date was way before I was born. My curiosity grew, and I read the next diary.

2021. 10. 16

Hello Diary. It’s me again, Lily. Yes, I know. It has been days since I wrote my first diary. I’m sorry. Mother and Father stayed in the house all week, so I had no time to talk to you. Oh, right. You don’t know my parents are very dangerous. They fight every day. They throw things at each other, hit each other, and sometimes they try to leap down the window. Scary, huh? Me too. Mother and Father just went out to go to the market. I hope they won’t fight there. Yesterday, while Mother and Father were fighting, as usual, some police officers came to our house. But Mother nor Father were cowards. They tried to shoo the police officers away, saying that this was none of their business.

I was much, much more bewildered after reading this one. I kept on reading. Some were useless, and some made me much bewildered. Suddenly, the most important diary was right in front of my eyes.

2021. 11. 18

Hello Diary. Lily here. Today... Well... Okay, let me get this straight, but my parents... Well... My parents... Okay... Here we go. THEY DIVORCED! So sad, right? I... Well... I was so sad when they decided this, so I just ran out of my house. I was walking all alone till dinnertime when a kid suddenly spotted me on the ground. “Hey, there little guy!” She said. “How did you get here?” She picked me up. “Where do you live?” I couldn’t answer. I was so miserable by my parent's divorce when suddenly this kid talks to me. Scary. “...Let me take you to my house.” The girl said when I still didn’t answer. There were three snails in the girl’s house. Lians, Snail, and Mr. Snil. They agreed to take me in as a family member. Lians took care of me as a mother, and Snail took care of me as a father, while Mr. Snil taught me. The girl’s name is Sophia. She’s a Speaker. Oh, she’s calling me right now. See you later diary!

“No, no...” I said. “This can’t be... I must be dreaming...” I continued reading.

2021. 11. 30

Lians and Snail’s kids are just born! They didn’t hatch from their eggs yet, but they look so CUTE!!! So round and chubby... I’m so glad to be a sister to these adorable little snails. Sorry for the short diary, Diary, but I want to go see the eggs again. They look so ADORABLE! Bye, bye!

I dropped the diary and sat there motionless. Lians and Snail weren’t Lily’s real parents. Its real parents divorced. Lily was not related to me. Sail and Kate still think I’m their family, even though I’m not... Now I get it...
